Which makes the "benefits" of such even more disproportionate.
We're used to thinking of mining for stones aka jewels as a frivolous activity that is not worth the cost. We really, really need to get people thinking about other mining that way as well. (Which is part of why I've been reluctant to boost "This would be a great time to go solar!" posts since the invasion of Iran.)

BITTERLY disappointed that one of my favorite writers, whose topics center on food sovereignty, now has a newsletter on the Nazi platform.
I just don't think it's expecting too much of self-declared critics and iconoclasts of exploitative capitalism to *not* be on a platform that actively courts fascists, but I guess I'm too naive. Or a victim of purity culture 🙄 Maybe, but I'm experiencing it as nausea right now.

I've been thinking about this. Because it's the other way around, right? If they hadn't shrugged at most over ALL of the harm done to vulnerable BIPOC bodies, the institutionalized exploitation wouldn't have reached them.
It's something I think about a lot when I'm wearing my climate organizing hat. We've known for decades about what's gone on in environmental justice communities, and tried to "help". We didn't realize that what happened to "them" eventually happened to "us".

It *is* a political argument. We've tried to be clever with workarounds and guilting consumers, but those aren't effective. The problem is emissions. Displacing one source with another is whack-a-mole. We have to limit what industry can do and what they can sell, and we have to penalize them if they go over. NOT allow them to buy indulgences.

So far, that hasn't worked, and we've been trying for a long time. Alternative/renewable energy sources are increasingly used--this is great. Except that we are still using the old ones, and ever increasing amounts of it.

People need to understand that complying with #ICE goons will keep you only so safe. Ask a Holocaust survivor. Ask a Korean who lived through the Japanese occupation. Ask your BIPOC friends, relatives, and ancestors. Eventually, sadists with guns will brutalize or kill you for sport, and it won't matter whether you behaved or not.

I shame spiral when I think of the one conversation I had with a friend who was radicalized by 9/11 and fangirled the Iraq War. I backed down, mouthed something about how bad Hussein was--and he was--but that memory is burned into my skull.
The Trump administrations have been so clarifying. I don't get bs'ed anymore. Using the lens of corruption and...no, that's really it--you can explain almost everything now. All of the rest, as we say on Shabbat, is just commentary.

I'm an indie author, so I get the second in theory but not practice. There are very few people who can meaningfully do business on those platforms unless they already have a "name". And then you are risking the business you do build on the caprice of the moderators and owners.
I'm not excusing racism. I get not wanting to be here if you suffered that. But start a Signal group instead. BlueSky has shown they favor TERFs and fascists; of course they'll side with racists.

I have a #math question. Everyone inclined to snicker, please look away.
I need to take the integral of (e^x)*(sin^2(x))*(cos(x)) (and variants thereof). I don't think I can simplify this anymore so I can get this into, basically, a function of two terms.
Does it make sense to find the integral of (sin^2(x))*(cos(x)) and then use that information to integrate the whole function by parts, with (e^x)dx being the other "part"? It's been days and I can't think of any other way to do this.

We are going from a little over $1000/month to more than $2300/month. Some of that is an adult child we're covering because she's underpaid, but not most of it. My family can bear it (plus two kids in state colleges, plus helping a disabled relative...), but it won't be pleasant. And it does not make me feel any better that other families will be much worse off.

I'm well aware of how long the US gov't and most citizens were willing to let Europe's Jews die in concentration camps even after we entered, to say nothing of the camps we set up ourselves for Japanese Americans. I am looking for a live-in #caretaker for my sister. She is autistic and nonverbal, but ambulatory and can perform basic functions on her own. However, she can't take care of herself--cook, clean, etc--and needs prompts for numerous things.

Reading *More and More and More: An All-Consuming History of Energy* by Jean-Baptiste Fressoz. There's no such thing as "energy transition". The historical analog to pointing out out how much fossil fuels are used to produce solar panels is how much wood was used to extract coal--and then later steel and, yep, fossil fuels.
Anyone who thinks they can "transition" to a magically circular, green economy has not been paying attention to how things work.

This post on process knowledge vs. IP by @npub1fdr…lvhs is something many home cooks will nod along to. Unless a recipe is scrupulously tested, it's almost impossible to get the same result (and that's not a bad thing). And that is assuming the cook in question has a "feel" for cooking and the specific dish. There's some things you learn to know by sight or smell that are difficult to convey in words.

They kind of take that narrative with Sado as well. Let's agree that being born into the Joseon royal family was guaranteed to cause psychological bs, and the kings and princes weren't known as good fathers (with the exception of maybe Sejong); most of them managed to *not* kill everyone on site.

This thread is also making me think about ALL the #kdrama (s) and movies about Yi Bangwon. He was saner and had an actual theory of government, but he was also as bloodthirsty as Herod.
I keep thinking about to what extent the focus on certain figures is the writers trying to say something about now, and to what extent they're feeding an existing interest in certain figures.

The smartest thing for South Korea to do is to pull all investments out of the United States immediately. They are otherwise throwing good money after bad. After that, they need to enter into some kind of negotiated settlement with China for their protection, because we are lousy military allies, despite Hegseth bs'ing earlier this year about SK being the fulcrum of the Indo-Pacific strategy (and that's a whole nother story).

I have no doubt that this is part of the continued shakedown, and a message that South Korea should not get comfortable with anything they have negotiated with us. It is probably 1) pressure to agree to let Trump have a stake in Samsung and SK hynix and 2) a prelude to taking over the sites. I'm serious, because that's how fascists operate.

+ BUT then Trump says, hey, we'll take an equity stake in Samsung and SK Hynix, just as we're going to with Intel. Which, first of all, is complete BS, and the South Koreans had trouble containing their shock in public, but also, while Intel is said to be a decaying company, there are very real ways in which Samsung is the engine of the South Korean economy at this point. This should basically be a non-starter.
