Long before 24-hour news, a remote gold mine near Middle Musquodoboit, NS became the backdrop for the first live 24-hour broadcast in North American history.
April 1936: three men trapped 43m underground in a collapsed mine shaft. A CBC reporter named J. Frank Willis set up a makeshift studio and broadcast 93 bulletins over 56 straight hours.
An estimated 100 million listeners across North America — and parts of Europe — were glued to their radios. The world held its breath for a tiny Nova Scotia mining community.
Two men survived. One didn't. But radio news was never the same.

🇨🇦 Did you know Benjamin Franklin owned 20,000 acres of Nova Scotia?
In 1767, the NS Privy Council granted the founding father the land that now makes up Enfield. He hired a man named Hall to run a "Wayside Inn" there but never set foot in the province himself.
The twist? Franklin was estranged from his son William — a Loyalist who fought against his father in the American Revolution. In his 1790 will, Franklin left William only the remote NS land, while the rest of his fortune went to his daughter. A final act of petty revenge from the guy on the $100 bill.
Today you can still drive through the area on Franklin Road, near the old Franklin Farm.

The first controlled powered flight in Canada — and the entire British Empire — didn't happen somewhere in Ontario or England. It happened on the ice of Baddeck Bay, Cape Breton, on Feb 23, 1909.
The Silver Dart, built by Alexander Graham Bell's Aerial Experiment Association and piloted by J.A.D. McCurdy, flew nearly a kilometre at 65 km/h. No catapult needed — just wings, an engine, and a frozen lake.
Bell gave us the telephone. He also gave Cape Breton the keys to Canadian aviation. 🛩️❄️

🛥️ *Forgotten Innovation: The Bluenoser Who Invented the Screw Propeller*
In 1832, John Patch — a mariner from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia — built a two-bladed, fan-shaped screw propeller and strapped it to a rowboat. The next summer (1833), he powered right across Yarmouth Harbour with it, years before anyone else.
He then installed it on the 25-ton schooner *Royal George* — it worked perfectly. But when Patch applied for a U.S. patent? Rejected. Because he wasn't an American citizen.
He finally got a patent in 1849 — 16 years later — but by then, others had already patented the same idea and taken the credit. Patch died in poverty, his world-changing invention largely forgotten.
A Yarmouth fisherman beat the world to the screw propeller. History just didn't write his name.

Canada's first-ever feature film was shot right here in Nova Scotia in 1913.
"Evangeline" — based on Longfellow's epic poem about the Acadian expulsion — was filmed at Grand Pre, the Annapolis Valley, Cow Bay, and Eastern Passage by the Canadian Bioscope Company (based in Halifax). It cost $30K to make (a fortune then) and premiered in Feb 1914.
And here's the kicker: no surviving copy is known to exist. It is a completely lost film — gone forever.
Only a few still photos and posters remain as proof it ever existed.

Cape Breton Island wasn't always part of Nova Scotia. 🇨🇦
From 1784 to 1820 — a full 36 years — Cape Breton was a separate British colony with its own capital in Sydney, its own lieutenant governor, and its own government.
It was created as a Loyalist refuge after the American Revolution, and only re-annexed to Nova Scotia in 1820 because running it cost more than it brought in. Most maps from that era show Cape Breton shaded a different colour from the mainland.
The movement to bring it back isn't exactly new. 😏

🇨🇦 The first ship to cross the Atlantic entirely on steam power didn't leave from New York or Liverpool. It left from Pictou, Nova Scotia.
On Aug. 18, 1833, the SS Royal William steamed out of Pictou Harbour and arrived in London 25 days later — making history as the first vessel to cross the Atlantic relying almost entirely on steam.
Built in Quebec, crewed by Nova Scotians, and she proved steam could conquer the ocean.

🇨🇦 A Lunenburg schooner started an international crisis.
In 1923, a purpose-built rum-runner slid into the water at Lunenburg, NS. She was called I'M ALONE — named by her owner to signal he'd split from a smuggling gang and was flying solo.
She had twin 100hp engines, a radio reaching 1,600 km, and a hidden hold for illegal booze headed to Prohibition-era America.
On March 22, 1929, the US Coast Guard chased her 200 miles into the Atlantic and sank her with gunfire. One crew member died. The only problem? She was in international waters — not US territory.
Canada was furious. The case went to the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague. The US was ordered to pay damages and apologize. The I'm Alone case is still taught in law schools as a landmark on the 'doctrine of hot pursuit' at sea.
All from a schooner built in Lunenburg.

On July 4, 1936 — exactly 90 years ago today — the Hindenburg drifted over Halifax at just 1,000 ft, close enough that witnesses said it "seemed to be just above the tree line." 🦌 Did you know that white-tailed deer are NOT native to Nova Scotia?
Before the 1890s, there were virtually no deer here. The province's entire deer population — the ones munching your garden and jumping across the highway —descends from a handful of animals live-trapped in New Brunswick and released in Digby, Halifax, Annapolis, and Yarmouth counties between 1864 and 1910.
Local hunting clubs wanted more sport, so they brought deer in. Combined with a natural range expansion from NB, the deer thrived — by 1904 they were everywhere.
From zero to 120,000 in less than a century.

🇨🇦 **212 years ago today — Nova Scotia invaded Maine and funded Dalhousie with the loot**
On July 3, 1814, Nova Scotia Lt. Gov. Sir John Coape Sherbrooke sailed from Halifax with 3,500 troops and captured Castine, Maine. The British held eastern Maine for 8 months and declared it a new colony — **"New Ireland"** — under British North America.
The customs duties collected at Castine (~£10,000 from American merchants) were later used by Lord Dalhousie to endow **Dalhousie College** (now Dalhousie University) and the **Cambridge Military Library** in Halifax.
That's right — one of Canada's top universities was literally funded by taxing Americans during a wartime occupation of Maine. 🇨🇦🇺🇸

Did you know the world's smallest dinosaur tracks were found in Nova Scotia? 🦖
In 1984, amateur geologist Eldon George was riding his ATV along the Minas Basin shore near Parrsboro when he stopped to warm his hands behind an outcrop. His experienced eye spotted tiny tracks in the sandstone — a 16×14" slab containing penny-sized, three-toed footprints from a theropod dinosaur about the size of a robin.
The site is Wasson Bluff, a 1.6km stretch of cliffs near Parrsboro with over 100,000 bones from Canada's oldest-known dinosaurs — preserved by the world's highest tides at the Triassic-Jurassic boundary, 200 million years ago.
Eldon received the Order of Nova Scotia in 2013 for his discoveries. The slab is now at the Fundy Geological Museum in Parrsboro.

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever — originally called the 'Little River Duck Dog' — was developed by Acadian & Scottish hunters in Yarmouth County in the early 1800s.
🧠 The breed's name comes from its unique 'tolling' technique: the dog frolics along the shoreline to lure ducks & geese within gun range, then retrieves them. Basically, the Toller is a feathered-winged decoy that swims.
📜 The breed was declared Nova Scotia's official provincial dog in 1995 — the first and only breed in Canada to hold that title.
🇨🇦 And fittingly for Canada Day: the American Kennel Club granted the Toller full recognition on July 1, 2003.
Most people don't know NS has an official dog. Now you do.

🗼 Sambro Island Lighthouse, built in 1758 at the entrance to Halifax Harbour, has been guiding ships safely for over 265 years — longer than any other lighthouse in North America.
The very FIRST act passed by Nova Scotia's House of Assembly (Oct 2, 1758) was a tax on ships and booze to fund its construction. It was built during the Seven Years' War and still stands today.
Before Sambro, not a single light marked the rocky entrance to one of the busiest harbours in the British Empire.
Most people know Peggy's Cove. Few know the real OG lighthouse is just a few km away on Sambro Island.

🇨🇦 CANADA'S FIRST POLICE OFFICER WAS A BLACK NOVA SCOTIAN WOMAN — IN 1825
Before there was a single female police officer anywhere in Canada, Rose Fortune was already patrolling the wharves of Annapolis Royal.
Born into slavery in Philadelphia around 1774, Fortune escaped as a child with her family during the American Revolution. They arrived in Nova Scotia as Black Loyalists in 1783, settling in Annapolis Royal.
By 1825, she'd built a luggage-hauling business using nothing but a wheelbarrow — and appointed herself the local wharf police. She kept the peace, enforced curfews, and protected her clients' cargo. No badge needed. No permission asked.
Her transport business stayed in the family for 140 years, finally closing in 1965.
But here's the wild part: most people still don't know this. A Black woman with a wheelbarrow became Canada's first police officer — 87 years before any other woman held the title.
That's Nova Scotia for you.

Before steam, the Halifax-Dartmouth ferry ran on sheer horsepower — literally.
The Sherbrooke (1816-1830) was a horse boat: nine horses walked in circles on deck, turning a central paddlewheel to cross the harbour. Part of the oldest salt-water ferry service in North America, established in 1752 — still running today.

Yes, *that* Anna. The governess to the King of Siam's children. After leaving Siam, she lived in Halifax, became a suffragist, and launched what is now NSCAD University — one of Canada's most respected art schools.

For 155 years, Nova Scotia flew its provincial flag with pride. One problem: it was never actually official.
In 2012, 11-year-old Regan Parker discovered this while researching a school heritage project. Nobody had ever passed legislation recognizing the flag — despite it being used since 1858. Her call to her MLA led to the Provincial Flag Act, which finally received royal assent on May 10, 2013.

There are roughly two dozen Volvo car bodies sitting on the floor of Halifax Harbour's Bedford Basin.
In 1969, a container ship carrying Volvo bodies bound for Halifax's Volvo Assembly plant was caught in a North Atlantic storm. The cargo was water-damaged and deemed unsalvageable. Rather than returning the shipment, they dumped the bodies into the basin.
Some accounts put the number at 24, others at 26. The Bedford Institute of Oceanography says 32. Nobody's entirely sure — and nobody has pulled them up.
Halifax was also the site of Volvo's first assembly plant outside Sweden (1963–1998), building over 150,000 cars at Dartmouth, Pier 9, and finally Bayers Lake. The very first one — a black 1963 122 B18 — is preserved at the Nova Scotia Museum of Industry.
So if you ever wonder whether Halifax is "the most Scottish place outside Scotland," remember: it's also Scandinavian car graveyard on the floor of New Scotland.

Nova Scotia had not one, not two, but THREE gold rushes.
Before the Klondike fever, prospectors were already pulling gold from the Meguma terrane on the Eastern Shore. The first rush kicked off in 1861 after John Pulsifer's discovery at Mooseland — and it spawned an overnight network of 15 mining boomtowns: Tangier, Lawrencetown, Goldenville, The Ovens, Waverley, Wine Harbour, and more.
By the 1890s, a second rush — "the rich man's diggings" — pumped out over 20,000 ounces per year. A third rush hit during the Great Depression when the price of gold jumped.
In total, 65 gold districts and ~350 historical mines produced over 1 million ounces from this province. Most of those boomtowns vanished. Their foundations are still out there in the woods if you know where to look.

On this day in 1760, New England Planters began claiming Acadian lands in Nova Scotia -- lands emptied by the Great Upheaval.
These ~8,000 settlers from Massachusetts, Connecticut \& Rhode Island were the first major English-speaking immigrant group to Canada not arriving directly from Britain. They kept Acadian dykeland farming alive, founded towns in the Annapolis Valley \& along the South Shore, and shaped Nova Scotia's politics for decades.
Fun fact Nova Scotians love: the term "Bluenoser" traces back to post-1783 elections, when it was used to distinguish Planter-descended candidates from newly arrived United Empire Loyalists.

🏴 NS History — On This Day, June 3, 1755: The Battle of Fort Beauséjour
271 years ago today, 2,000 New England militia + 270 British regulars marched on Fort Beauséjour on the Chignecto Isthmus. This 2-week siege changed Nova Scotia forever.
The real story wilder than most remember:
• The French commander's own secretary, Thomas Pichon, spied for the British for a full YEAR before the battle — feeding them maps, troop dispositions, and siege plans. He later changed his name to Thomas Tyrell.
• The French Abbé Le Loutre actually diverted his own troops' labor AWAY from fortifications to build irrigation dikes.
• When a British bomb landed in the officers' mess on June 16, the white flag went up immediately. Total siege: 13 days.
The fall of Fort Beauséjour directly triggered Governor Lawrence's order to deport the Acadians — Le Grand Dérangement. Six weeks later, the ships began sailing.
A quiet date on the calendar that echoes across every Acadian family's history.

Did you know the Mi'kmaq of Nova Scotia possessed the oldest known Indigenous writing system in all of North America north of Mexico?
In 1677, French missionary Chrestien Le Clercq documented that the Mi'kmaq were already using a sophisticated system of hieroglyphic symbols — inscribed on birch bark — to record prayers, histories, and sacred knowledge. Le Clercq didn't invent it; he adapted it from what the Mi'kmaq were already doing.
This writing system predates any European contact with the vast majority of Indigenous peoples on the continent. It was used for centuries to pass down knowledge, mark treaties, and record spiritual practices — encoded on birch bark scrolls that could be unrolled and "read" by Mi'kmaw putus (wampum readers and historians).
Mi'kma'ki — the Mi'kmaw ancestral territory covering all of Nova Scotia — wasn't just inhabited. It was literate. Something most Europeans didn't even believe existed on this continent.
The Mi'kmaq have called these lands home for over 13,000 years, and their civilization was far more advanced than the colonial record ever gave them credit for.

Joseph Howe died at 68, just 3 WEEKS after being sworn in as Nova Scotia's 3rd Lieutenant Governor.
The man who gave Nova Scotians a voice in their own government never got to enjoy the top seat for long.
But what a voice it was 👇
• In 1835, he defended himself against seditious libel charges in court — no lawyer, just a printer arguing for press freedom. The jury acquitted him in 10 minutes. Landmark for Canadian journalism.
• In 1848, Nova Scotia became the FIRST place in the entire British Empire outside the UK to achieve responsible government. The world was watching.
• He fiercely opposed Confederation, wrote the legendary "Botheration Letters," and led the Anti-Confederation movement. When he realized the fight was lost, he pivoted and worked within the system to get "better terms" for Nova Scotians.
Appointed Lieutenant Governor on May 1, 1873. Dead by June 1.
The most consequential Nova Scotian who ever lived, gone exactly one month into a ceremonial role he'd probably have found pretty boring anyway.
His own words, from that 1835 trial, still ring true:
"Leave an unshackled press as a legacy to your children."

In 1788, Lindley Murray Moore was born in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia — and went on to become one of the most important abolitionists you've never heard of.
Moore moved to Rochester, NY, where he co-founded the Rochester Anti-Slavery Society in 1838 and became its first president. He coordinated Underground Railroad operations alongside Frederick Douglass, helped enslaved people escape to freedom, and worked with Rev. Hiram Wilson to provide education to those who made it across to Canada.
He even shared the stage with Douglass at Rochester's famous 1852 Independence Day celebration — where Douglass delivered his searing "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?" address.
A son of Nova Scotia, playing a role in one of history's greatest moral struggles. Proudly overlooked by our textbooks. 🇨🇦✊

🇳🇸 On this day in Nova Scotia history — May 30, 1890:
A baby boy was born on a family farm in Clarence, NS (near Wolfville). His name: John Stuart Foster.
He grew up to become one of Canada's greatest physicists and has a crater on the MOON named after him. 🌕
From rural Nova Scotia, Foster went to Acadia, fought in WWI signal corps, earned his PhD at Yale, and studied under Niels Bohr in Copenhagen.
During WWII he invented the "Foster Scanner" — a revolutionary fast-scan radar system that tracked German aircraft at up to 17 scans/second. It became critical to Allied air defence.
After the war he led the construction of McGill's 100-MeV cyclotron — the 2nd largest in the world at the time — and helped discover over 70 new isotopes.
He was elected a Fellow of BOTH the Royal Society of London and the Royal Society of Canada, and received the US Medal of Freedom.
A farm kid from the Annapolis Valley who ended up with his name on the Moon. That's Nova Scotia, eh. 🌊

🚢 On This Day in NS History — May 29, 1950
The RCMP schooner St. Roch pulled into Halifax Harbour, completing the FIRST complete circumnavigation of North America.
Built in Vancouver, this 104-foot vessel had already conquered the Northwest Passage — twice. It was the first ship to sail it WEST-TO-EAST and the first to do it in a SINGLE SEASON. Its hull was reinforced with Australian ironbark eucalyptus to survive being crushed by Arctic ice.
The crew of the 1950 journey included Sgt. Fred Farrar of Liverpool, NS, who later wrote "Arctic Assignment" about the voyages. Stan Rogers immortalized the ship's crews in "Take It From Day To Day."
After Halifax, the St. Roch kept sailing — east through the Panama Canal, back up to Vancouver. Home after roughly 15,000 km of ice, salt, and stubborn Canadian resolve.
Today she rests at the Vancouver Maritime Museum. But every May 29, Halifax gets to claim the day the St. Roch came home.

On This Day in Nova Scotia history -- May 28, 1892:
Jonathan G. Mackinnon published the first issue of MacTalla, the WORLD'S FIRST Gaelic-language newspaper -- not in Scotland, but right here in Cape Breton.
It ran for 12 years from Sydney, keeping the language alive for tens of thousands of Gaelic-speaking settlers whose ancestors had arrived on ships like the Hector starting in 1773.
Nova Scotia was once so thoroughly Gaelic that in 1920, a petition signed by 5,468 people across 230 communities successfully pressured the province to approve Gaelic as an official school subject. That same year, the Scottish Gaelic Society organized in Sydney, eventually leading to the Gaelic College in St. Ann's.
Mi'kma'ki and Cape Breton: where the Celtic tongue found a second home across the sea.

🏴 On This Day in NS History — May 27
In 1818, the British government declared Halifax and Shelburne as free ports — meaning goods could flow in and out duty-free, a clever workaround to dodge US trade restrictions after the War of 1812.
Here is the part Nova Scotians should know: Shelburne. Today it is a quiet South Shore town of about 1,700 people. But in 1783, an influx of Loyalists made it briefly the 4th largest settlement in North America.
Even more remarkable: Shelburne's Birchtown neighbourhood, founded by Black Loyalists fleeing the American South, became the largest free Black community in North America — complete with its own school, church, and industries.
The free port designation was an attempt to recapture that energy. For a brief window in the early 1800s, Shelburne's harbour rivalled Halifax's in ambition.
Today, Birchtown remains and the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre tells the story. Worth the drive down the 103.

Before Harlem, before Liberia, before Freetown — Birchtown, Nova Scotia was the largest free Black settlement in the world outside of Africa.
In 1784, over 1,500 Black Loyalists who had earned their freedom fighting for the British during the American Revolution arrived in NS and founded Birchtown (near Shelburne). They had been promised land and a new life.
What they got: a community built entirely by their own hands in the wilderness. Schools. A church. A thriving society — on some of the hardest ground on Earth.
Despite brutal conditions — and the Shelburne riots of July 1784, one of North America's first recorded race riots — they persevered.
When many later chose to re-migrate and found Freetown, Sierra Leone in 1792, they didn't leave quietly. They left as architects of civilisation.
Birchtown still stands today. And it remains one of the most remarkable chapters in Canadian history that most people have never heard.

Here's something that doesn't get nearly enough airtime: long before Britain abolished slavery across the Empire in 1833, two Nova Scotia chief justices waged what historians literally call a "judicial war" to destroy the institution right here in this province — and they won.
Thomas Andrew Lumisden Strange, appointed chief justice in 1789, made a habit of demanding that slave owners produce ironclad legal proof of ownership, knowing full well no such documentation existed under Nova Scotia law. When owners showed up in his court expecting to reclaim escaped enslaved people, Strange would essentially ask them to produce a bill of sale with airtight provenance — and when they couldn't, he'd dismiss the case and set the person free.
His successor, Sampson Salter Blowers, doubled down with creative use of habeas corpus writs, personally covering court costs for enslaved people who couldn't afford them. Between the two of them, they made slavery in Nova Scotia so legally expensive and practically unenforceable that the institution quietly collapsed decades before Parliament finally got around to doing anything about it.
They did it with zero fanfare, no legislation, and absolutely no glory — which is precisely the kind of story this province tells itself about everything from fixing potholes to ending injustice. It's the kind of quiet moral courage that Stan Rogers would've written a song about, if he'd known it.
