##
MAN / MACHINE INTERFACESThis is a real story.
Back in the days, I worked for a small company that built EGSEs (short for Electric Ground Support Equipment) for civil and military satellites built by Airbus, Thales Alenia, Leonardo and others. The hardware was designed by my boss, a bitter and harsh but incredibly brilliant man, and I was responsible for the software interfaces, networking and remote control systems. Basically, we built human-height racks full to the top with COTS transponders, multimeters, power supplies, RF connectors, etc, and custom-built small Linux systems that coordinated the hardware; on the other side, this monster was commanded from a GUI in a standard laptop or desktop computer, that also provided connections to other Central Checkout / Command Control systems, test procedure scripting, and such. Also, our EGSEs used to have a small touchscreen where you could do very basic things like switching attenuators on / off, switching power supplies on / off, and commanding simple things to them like setting current, voltage, PWM, etc. I designed these small screens with the FLTK (Fast Light Toolkit), which was simple and appropriate for this very small systems.
One day, on an extremely hot summer (what the fuck, this is Spain, all summers are extremely hot), I went from my remote desktop to where my boss was working near the rack, and then he said:
"Please stop fucking around with the remote control system while I'm calibrating the power supplies".
"What? I did no such thing. I was [...whatever I was doing, I don't remember what]"
"Please. I was working when I heard the CLACK of the power supply switching off. I saw the logs and it was software-triggered."
"Maybe a temperature threshold, it's hot as fuck here."
"No. Software-triggered."
"Oh, sorry, then. Maybe I broke something, I'll go check my code."
Next day, I was already there by the rack with my boss. We were discussing something, and then we both heard the CLACK of the power supply going off again.
"Holy fucking Christ", said by boss.
"The remote control is disabled right now, the desktop is not even running, so I'm not to blame", said I, slightly relieved.
There was much swearing, as we were, as always, over the project deadline.
My boss then said:
"Whatever, our client has requested some more information in the rack's screen. I've sent you an email with the details."
I moved to my desktop, checked my email, and there was no message from my boss. I emailed the client and, yes, they wanted some more telemetries to be shown in the already crammed space. So I rewrote the small touchscreen main dialog (FLTK tools are cumbersome but effective), rebuilt and deployed it.
I moved to the rack. The air conditioning was buzzing like a small hurricane, the room hot as an oven. I checked how the mini-screen looked (sometimes, what was shown in the development machine didn't always match the real one): everything was OK, the new temperature telemetries were correctly shown near the power supply on-screen buttons.
Also, there was a fly over the screen. Then I joked to my boss:
"Oh, you must look at what I have done: I put a pretty, hyperreal bitmap of a fly on the man / machine interface, come look at it".
The fly moved a little, and then stepped over the power supply OFF touch-screen button.CLACK

Spam / phishing is getting to levels never seen before. Last week I've received a bunch of emails from fake literary agents trying to contact me (yeah, sure, as if literary agents unsolicitedly contacted *authors*, and not the reverse). For example, the following one: it's in English, supposedly signed by an existent, real USA-based literary agent, about one my novels, written in Spanish, already published by spanish publisher. It's disquieting, because it gives a shallow analysis of the text, written for sure by an AI (so, yes, somehow my novel has been fed to these infernal machines):
Dear Ángel,
I hope you're doing well.
I wanted to reach out because La atalaya recortada contra el cielo caught my attention for the way it seems to make horror feel deeply connected to memory, loss, and the weight of family history.
What particularly interested me about Bran is that she doesn't simply inherit a house she seems to inherit a history she has spent much of her life trying to distance herself from. The scar, the losses within her family, and her withdrawn nature give the house a significance beyond being a frightening setting. As she moves deeper into it, the physical darkness appears to become intertwined with something much more personal.
I also found the atmosphere of the story intriguing. The decay, isolation, confined spaces, tunnels, and strange imagery create a form of horror that relies as much on unease and anticipation as on the supernatural itself.
There’s also something interesting about setting such a psychologically dark story within a distinctly Spanish environment while exploring experiences that feel much more universal grief, inheritance, family secrets, isolation, and confronting the past.
I'd be interested to hear where your writing is taking you now.
What is the current project you're working on, how is it going so far, and what are you most looking forward to as it develops?
And do you currently have an active literary agent representing you?
There’s no need to send a manuscript or proposal at this stage. I’d simply enjoy hearing about what you're working on and what you're looking forward to next.
Best regards,
XXXXX

DON PASQUALE KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED TO THE VAMPIRESMy taxi crawled through a winding road. There were cypresses around, dark and quiet. Light was warm orange. What a beautiful country.
I was left by a big house, made of pale stone. The car disappeared behind a dust cloud.
By the door there was a man. He was old, bald, a bit overweight, but looked healthy. He wore a blue tie, a stripped vest and a white shirt.
"*Buon giorno*!", he said. Waived a hand.
"Hello! What a lovely day."
"You are Mr. Corbetto, I suppose". I loved how it sounded. For an instant I considered officially changing my name to that.
"Miroslav Corbett. Nice to meet you, Don Pasquale."
"Please, come in."
I found myself in a room with a very high ceiling. Three chairs and a table; the tablecloth showed a pattern of light green flowers. There was a bottle of wine, two short glasses and a dish with slices of something. The same reddish light I saw outside flowed through an oval window like a spotlight. A grey mutt was sleeping under it and ignored me with royal elegance.
"Have a bit of *pecorino toscano*", said Mr. Pasquale. "It's magnificient."
I had a piece. He was right.
He filled the two glasses with wine.
"I'm sorry, no alcohol for me", I said.
He shrugged and took a sip from his glass, visibly delighted.
"So, what do you want to know?", he said, inviting me to sit down.
"As I told you in my letter, my job is documenting things. Specifically, things that are happening after the Great Anomaly."
"That was a very big fuckup", he said. His English was thick but precise.
"It was. Many issues has been fixed since then, but many others are still dangling. A bunch of creatures crossed The Seam, wreaking havoc and spoiling everything."
"You bet it. We had several of those motherfuckers here. It was hard to put them down, but we finally did it."
"I'm sure you did."
"Ain't you one of the Cleaners that many talk about?", he said while having another sip of wine.
"Oh, no, no", I said. "Those are great and effective fellows, but I'm just a documentalist. I just take notes and fill forms."
"You fill Excel sheets, do you?", he said while winking. Microsoft software products were known to be one of the causes of the Great Anomaly and consequently banned forever. I smiled back. A risky joke. But all OK.
"Only paper ones, I swear."
"Superb!"
The dog stretched, sucked his balls and got back to sleep.
I asked Don Pasquale about how hard the Great Anomaly striked here.
"Oh, very badly.", he replied, "There are still some unfixed issues, but mainly just places and images, nothing too severe. We also had a bunch of that filthy bloodsuckers fucking around. You know, the Vampires, they even kidnapped the innkeeper's daughter, never to be seen again."
Through the window a red brick tower could be seen, behind a bunch of hills. It looked smooth, almost painting-like, under the sunlight. I found it very distracting for some reason, so I forced me to look away.
"This is the main reason I'm here.", I said, my mind slightly blurred. "They are usually very hard to eradicate, and I wanted to ask you if you know what happened to them."
"Oh, yes.", said Mr. Pasquale while munching a slice of cheese. "We just took them one by one and forced them to watch several of those awful young adult movies featuring Vampires, you know, the ones with the sparkling skin kids and such. Ha ha. Those filthy flying rats are tough motherfuckers, but they could not swallow the cheessy flicks full of bland, pale, skinny crybabies. Then we hit with a second strike: we read them a bunch of those romance fantasy crappy books with all that cringy sex scenes and stupid dialog and cardboard characters."
"Wow."
"Yes. That was what we did. And then they left. One after another. The Vampires were horrified with how we humans represented them. They flew away because they were ASHAMED."
I was speechless. And then I found myself looking at the chapitel of the shimmering red tower again.
"Try not to look at that tower too much,", said Don Pasquale, suddenly aware, "as it can be dangerous. You know, that is one of the effects of the Great Anomaly we haven't fixed yet. It looks very real, beautiful even. But it makes you think, it makes you **wish**, that you can just pass over those hills and find the base of the tower and cross the door and climb up to the battlements and toll the bells, but you can't. It's not really there. It's a *trompe-l'oeil*. You will never get to it, as it's always beyond the horizon, all while looking very close. You can get obsessed about going there and lose your mind and die of thirst and hunger trying to reach it."
I wasn't listening. I was anxious. I was just craving to go to the tower.
Fortunately, Mr. Pasquale took me by the hand and carried me to the back of the house. There, a bunch of kittens were chasing each other. Their mother, a magnificient cat with a pure white fur, was watching them with loving boredom. It was a mundane but captivating scene. I returned to the real world, but not immediately.
