Then you can click and drag to put where you are putting your bulbs, plants, and seeds into (via rows, grids, etc). Then you put in the planting date. You can at the end mark them as harvested or pulled out or any other option you want.)
The cool thing is that there will be dating features where you can see on a timeline where things go in the beds over time, and you can scroll to see the changes over the years. I think it'll be great for crop rotation for the home gardener.

I have some exciting news to tell you. Hubby is using his awesome programming skills to write garden bed planning software for me (and potentially others).
It'll be open source, and you put it on your computer. It won't be in the cloud or have a subscription service.
I'll be able to draw garden beds, put in their sizes, split them up into smaller beds, add paving stones.

Does anyone know the species and variety of this plant? It’s a perennial and looks like a sunflower crossed with an anemone dahlia and a daisy?
The leaves are rough and there is only slight serration to the leaves.

I had to pull out all my tomatoes and cucumbers out of the glasshouse yesterday, thanks to a nasty fungal infection attacking both of them thanks to our sucky summer weather.
This morning I washed down the glasshouse inside and out and pulled out all the stakes etc to wash and dry them in the sun.
This afternoon I put all the stakes away, emptied all the junk out of the woodshed and put it in the glasshouse for "winter" mode. I also set up the glasshouse for dehydrating plant material.

It's a great resource for maximising growing vegetables (and fruit and flowers) in a small space using various techniques.

There's a new website in NZ called OK Bouquet, where you can search in your local area and see if anyone local is selling flowers from their gardens. There are quite a few flower farms/florists on there, but there's also local people who make bunches of flowers from their gardens.
I put a jar of Floret zinnias up on there to see what happens. Who knows if anything will come of it, but it's an interesting concept.

The weather set up for today is exactly the same as yesterday.
Sunny morning followed by thunderstorms in the afternoon.
We've had so many thunderstorms in the afternoons this December. Usually we might get 2 - 3 in the whole month, but so far this month we've had at least 10??? With 2 - 3 each week?
It's good that it means we've had more rain than usual for December, but it's seriously cutting into my afternoon gardening time...

I'm leaving the aphid problem to the ladybirds to handle. They can eat up to 50 aphids a day each, and I've seen over a 100 of them in my garden.

I have a big aphid problem in the garden at the moment, but also I have a big population of ladybirds. They're everywhere, and eating the aphids like they're candy.

Dahlia 11: Mystic Sparkler from NZ breeder Keith Hammett
One of my all time favorite dahlias as she is just fluorescent and a bee magnet. I’ve had this plant for 10 years. She is hugely prolific over the summer.

Dahlia 10: Aporo Road Strawberry dahlia. This dahlia has been bred in New Zealand and the color is completely stunning it’s like a warm strawberry pink color mixed with cream. It makes the perfect cut flower dahlia for weddings I think.
This dahlia is very similar to the Strawberry and Cream dahlia (which I also have) but I think AR strawberry is prettier.

Sorry if I haven't been around much, and haven't replied to anyone.
Hubby came down with some sort of sickness on Thursday, and I'm currently playing nurse Crafty Gardener to hubby who is masked up and living in our spare bedroom until he is well. At least his covid and flu tests are negative.
I have an important GP doctors appointment on Thursday that I've been waiting 3 weeks to see him, so I can't get sick from hubby's lurgy.

Dahlia 4: Zahra, a white anemone dahlia I purchased this year from Mount Mera Botanical.
She wasn’t quite fully flowering but I wanted a photo of her before the north westerly wind got to her.
If you look carefully you can spot Patches the cat having a nap in the background.

Holy cow, things aren't going well at the Eurovision special meeting to deal with the Israel situation.
The following countries have pulled out of 2026 Eurovision:
* Spain
* The Netherlands
* Slovenia
* Ireland
* Belgium
And also possibly Iceland, they're waiting to have a meeting at home next week to confirm.
This is huge news, Spain and the Netherlands are in the top 6 countries financially paying for Eurovision.
I wouldn't be suprised if more countries followed.

Dahlia 3 for 2025: Julie-Ann, my own favorite seedling dahlia from last year.
I love the pink and tangerine stripes in the petals. It flowers prolifically all summer and is a favorite with bees and butterflies. Dahlia purists don’t like single dahlias but I love them.

A very rare dahlia tuber in NZ is on Trade Me, the current bid is at $150. That's how cut throat dahlia growing is, my guess is that commercial dahlia growers are fighting over it, a home gardener wouldn't pay that much for it.

I just resprayed liquid frost cloth on my citrus plants. The spray needs a couple of hours of sunlight to fully work as a frost cloth for the next 6 weeks.
We are also due for wind this afternoon, so I wanted to do it while it was still calm.
This acts as a backup for nights when it may be very windy when we go to bed and can't put frost cloth on, as it would blow away. But then it calms down just before dawn and we may get a light frost 🤞

Our local garden centre has wasabi plants in stock, so you know what I'll be doing today 🤩
I have very fond memories about wasabi plants, when I was doing my PhD in plant biochemistry with Crop & Food research, I got a chance to visit a field of it in Southland with my PhD supervisor. The farmer dug some of it up for us, and we got to eat some of it straight off the plant. It was a wonderful taste that often think about when I eat sushi.
Absolutely nothing can compare to fresh wasabi, it's nothing like the rubbish green coloured horseradish sushi places sell as 'wasabi'.

Our hedge trimmer is feeling better, and is here to trim all our hedges. Just in time too, as the local bird life are preparing for nest making and making babies. Our hedges are premium nesting spots for sparrows, blackbirds, starlings, and Tauhou.

I spent the afternoon sowing hardy seeds, and also tomatoes and capsicum seeds which live in our dining room for about 6 - 8 weeks.

Getting the first two garden beds in place are an urgent job to do before my last cataract surgery mid-August.
I need to get the strawberry plants back in the ground, and also transplant my natural dye plants into their new permanent bed.
Because as soon as I'm allowed to get back into the garden at the beginning of September, it's seed sowing season.

I came inside very filthy and tired, and jumped straight into the shower.
Now just very tired. Have another slab of concrete to move next weekend, and then I can start installing macrocarpa sleepers for the garden beds.
First I need to work out the maths to see how many I can fit in, along with paths in between. And also pay for them and get them delivered this week 🤔

I spent the afternoon in the old aviary space.
All the weeds are out, dug out rotten boards underneath the ground. Dug trenches along the back fence line and dragged edging wood we managed to recover from the aviary up against the back fence. Filled in an empty section of rail way sleeper edging. Weeded a square of pebbles where the worm farm is.
Moved a heavy section of concrete slab a couple of meters using physics, a spade, and my legs 💪

I’m sitting in ED with my Dunedin bestie. She was brought in by ambulance at 6.30 am. She’s had her vitals taken but still hasn’t seen a doctor.
She can’t leave because she is too ill. But is stuck in a no man’s land with 5 other people in the hallway triage area.
I’m so angry at the government right now for cutting services.

I finished weeding two small vege garden beds, and gave it a good rake to kill any seeds sprouting.
This weekend hubby is going to add in compost to both of them, and then dig them over for the winter. The potatoes will go into them in spring.
Except I now have 5 different varieties of potatoes to sow, but there's only space for 4 in that bed. I managed to find a place selling Victoria seed potatoes, and preordered a 6 pack. They're our favorite potato variety for making chips and roast potatoes.

In exciting news my sugar beet plant seeds have started to be ready for harvest. You can’t buy them for home gardening anymore since King Seeds stopped selling them a couple of years ago.

A loss of hospital beds in the new hospital. Not good, but they could've been worse by trying to retrofit the old hospital.
The only good thing to come out of the announcement was watching the hospital protestors peacefully surrounding the ministers car and heckling him as he left.

Am very tired. Spent all of today at my sister's helping her get her vege garden and glasshouse in order.
After the floods the weeds grew up to waist height in their garden during the time they were out of the house for repairs.

Just finished reading the first two books of the year.
Book #1 is "Pirone's Tree Maintenance: Seventh Edition".
I found this copy at a second hand book store in Oamaru (it's right next to TOTE). I paid $60 for it, but it's worth the price as the book is out of print. This is the ultimate tree maintenance book for the tree enthusiast, and I recommend tracking a copy down if you get the chance.
It's going on my reference shelf, and comes in at a huge 545 pages.

Yeah, you know how I've been taking prednisone for years to help with many sinus infections...well apparently high doses of prednisone makes you a high risk of getting cataracts.

I've started using Natio Mist Sunscreen the last couple of weeks on my face only, and it's the first sunscreen that doesn't end up giving me acne from daily wear.
I use the Cancer society on the rest of my body, but it's just too greasy for use on my face.

This was my first time trying Book Hero, which is a new independent online bookshop which opened in October this year. It's owned by the former owner of Mighty Ape, who wanted to get back to their roots, and all the books they sell are in their warehouse.
