It can be pretty draining, because of the level of focus required. I bet after four or five days of 20-minute bursts you'll feel able to do a bit more, mind. Or, if you feel ready, you could try two 20-minute blocks in a day, spaced far apart.

Excellent reporting - thank you for sharing it. Casteism definitely seems to be a factor. It's almost as though the families see the work as something they're entitled to, as well, even beyond the caste issue. But as the report makes clear, they relinquished that right. The guy comes from a family with temple links, and isn't overseeing the work of others. Preserving traditions is one thing, but this seems more like dogma.

I think the platforms are very enthusiastic about giving users the impression their data will be safe and secure. To then not live up to that is a dereliction of duty. The responsibility falls on the platforms to fulfil their promises, not on their victims to anticipate the ways they might be betrayed by bad-faith operators. Of course, trying to anticipate that will keep you safer in life. But it shouldn't be the expectation—that's called victim blaming.

You're never obliged to feel anything. Not everyone is in a position to be fully informed about these hazards, though, or adequately resourced to be able to do something about them. We have the time to read about the risks, and then sit here sharing ideas about how the internet could be better. That means we have time and resources others don't have—we didn't need to spend that time working, or supervising children, or caring for elderly infirm relatives, or doing unpaid domestic labour.

... in childhood or attend international schools here. They face a different set of challenges, I think — they don't choose their situation, we do; they often face racism on all sides; they have to deal with major language challenges in childhood disrupting schooling, unlike people who choose to relocate here later. But they also are much more accepted and their work on fluency in childhood puts them in a much stronger position professionally. And they can get Japanese nationality.

"Half" is the term used in Japanese (ハーフ) for people who have one Japanese parent and one parent who is not Japanese. It's a pretty awful term (reminds me of "half-cast" in the U.K., which was recognised as inappropriate many, many years ago) and there has been debate about it, but it hasn't shifted so I've used it reluctantly here to refer to the community of people who fit that description.
People who grow up in those families are often raised bilingual and spend time overseas...

(My personal view is that it's a mistake for Onoda to be seen as an advocate for all foreign nationals in Japan. The "half" community is distinct from foreign nationals. Each community has its own challenges that the other doesn't fully understand. Japan accepts members of the "half" community into politics and public life in ways it never would with other foreign nationals, but the idea that she can represent the interest of everyone who isn't Japanese is flawed.)

After missing an important message from my landlord's management agency because it was in a sea of spam and I hadn't been able to turn on notifications due to that, I finally managed to get the spam filter set up in a way that works for me.
But I was still left with over 18 months of up to 20 phishing messages a day that could very, very easily have been identified and filtered by SoftBank. It's mindblowing they're allowed to let that happen.

I can't delete it, because I can't see it on my instance. Auto-delete won't delete it either, for the same reason.
In terms of people's ability to control their data, this is a problem. It affects all #Mastodon users.

(Thinking of people like Swastik Productions, recently renamed Swastik Stories. Their Instagram channel carries multiple new stories every hour of the day. It's insane. I don't know how they expect anyone to interact with that volume of content and watch TV shows as well. It can only be targeted at students and housewives, although I have a hunch even most housewives don't have that much time in the day.)

I think it depends on how you're using it. If your feed is full of influencers and you're trying to compete with them, that is going to be work.
It's also hard to do well at the insane pace set by people who make money out of it, and so are happy to post so often their audience would only be able to keep up by abandoning their real lives altogether, irrespective of the harms.

Was looking for some straightforward web page widget that would tell me when major markets were open, but there's nothing. In fact, hardly any widgets seem to be available these days — I guess because most people don't code their own html pages anymore.
Depressing. Html is really straightward. That everyone has the ability to craft an internet presence is essential to democratizing our online existence. We've let tech bros appoint themselves gatekeepers by convincing us basic markup is hard.

Does it count as evasion if he just doesn't choose to pay double taxes? I'm lucky here as the U.K. has a tax agreement with Japan, but most of my U.S. colleagues end up getting taxed twice on the same earnings when they only live in one country, and I can definitely understand them making the choice to not do that anymore. (Obviously genuine evasion is a bad thing and I'm 100% opposed to that.)

It is strange how little vegetarian cuisine there is here given the prominence of Buddhism. You'd think there would be more (even if the flavours would probably still be different to what you're looking for). Maybe if there are restaurants in the areas with large Asian populations they'd be more authentic.

A group of people being ignorant about how good food can taste is probably less correlated to race or origin, and more correlated to experience. Lots of restaurants here cater to the Japanese palate, too, which (in general) differs significantly from a lot of the rest of Asia.

You will get a bit faster. If you already have the transcript and you're just tidying it, that's a lot of work done. The tidying and neat formatting is probably slower than touch typing the initial transcript, though. I did transcription for a publishers for a while. I think to do the whole recording from scratch it would take about the time you mention - maybe six or seven times the length of the recording.

It takes way longer than anyone would expect to work through a transcript. If you can get a decent audio player that you can control (pause, rewind a second or two and play) with keypresses it helps, so you don't have to keep moving your hands off the keyboard then switching back to type. A footpedal is apparently helpful but I've never used one and it's probably not worth buying for 10 hours of audio.
I think I used to use VLC. There might be other apps that work better.

It says that if you lock your account, people not following you can't see your posts (as expected) but that if you reply to a post by someone who doesn't follow you they can see what you wrote 🤔 That's seemed odd to me, although quite neat if it works—so it got me wondering if you have to reply to an actual post or if tagging them is enough....

I think a lot of Athiests fail to appreciate that Atheism is as much a religious viewpoint as any other, and that claims science is at odds with all religious ideas are flawed. Science is not "on the side of Atheism", some vocal Atheists would just like to claim that is the case in a bid to make their own unprovable arguments sound superior.
In doing so they have pinned the blame for human fallability on religion. The religion is now gone, but the fallability is still here.

In a culturally diverse society, the reduction of time spent on religious education in our curriculum may be a practical necessity.
But where is the moral education to replace it?
Love or hate religion, along with the religious verses came hours each week of moral guidance. Even if you disagreed with what was said, you considered it.
Perhaps the purging of this from many Western societies in the name of secular objectivity has played a part in leading us to where we are right now.

In #Mastodon 4.4 they've added the horrible popup window from #Bluesky when you try to click on a #hashtag.
If I wanted to do something weird with the hashtag, I'd right click it. Now I need to make an extra click every single time I just want to view the posts. It's one of the worst features of Bluesky, and they've added it into Mastodon.
It doesn't even do anything useful like tell you if you're following the hashtag.
Every time they update the Mastodon UI they make it worse.

I guess the issue of why people are having to migrate so far from their own communities for work is something none of the politicians want to get into. Soundbites on language win votes but actually getting into any of the political business that needs to be addressed is a quagmire.

That's really interesting. As someone unfamiliar with it, I'd have thought those who move there would have the sense that if you move to a place the burden is on you to become capable of functioning in the language for day-to-day use (even acknowledging that that is hard and that people don't always have the resources—even if it isn't possible, one can still recognise where the responsibility lies). The minority groups are different, of course. Historically only traders learned Marathi?

Maybe they upgraded to a shop nearby 🙏 Print is suffering everywhere, mind. I think it really has to differentiate via quality these days, and the price will probably have to go up quite a lot to compensate for the loss of sales. Whether it's possible to balance that and keep the price within an affordable range is the big question.
At least now, mind, the wire services aren't so much at liberty to give their content away for free while charging papers for it.

Although standards exist, they seem more obscure than they need to be, and like the minor differences between standards in each country are there to protect manufacturers from customers choosing to import, rather than for any real benefit. Don't you want the best protection for everyone?
Also, that the Japan standards are so much less rigorous for a "general" mask than for a "medical" mask speaks volumes.
I'm exhausted by all of it. There should be one standard: keep #covid out.

Every time I try to shop for masks these days I get frustrated. According to one page I checked the standard Japan came up with for medical use matches N95 (if you get the medical ones, not the general ones, even though they're conveniently called the same thing) but KF94 also had a maximum inward leakage rate of 11% (even though KF94 is very slightly less protective than N95, otherwise).
The Japanese medical JIS T 9001 standard doesn't seem to specify an inward leakage limit.

Yeah I've been trying to see what she wrote but none of the reporting is very specific (presumably to avoid the same liability).
I agree there are issues with how controversial online speech is handled. But if it's being handled that way when the speech was made outside the Hindu majority, it should absolutely be handled that way when it's made by that group, too. (I know my problem solving isn't particularly impressive here, I'm sorry. It does really suck. Nothing the orange menace is doing is good, and his nonsense financial threats are ridiculous.
