i always thought Nowhere would be a sim, on account of it being an existential game, yet this felt incomplete.
but then figured out our core game yesterday in an epiphany! this is great because now i finally have an idea what the *game* is and that helps to structure and prioritize everything else, and that finally gives me a chance at constructing a real GDD.
unfortunately the idea is so good that i cannot tell anyone yet. sorry for the tease.

another #GameMechanic
you start the game with all powerups unlocked and active.
the goal is to beat it to the end.
your basic outfit decays (maybe you're a car and your axles start rusting) and needs to be repaired before it breaks down, which costs coin.
the world itself yields very little coin.
but to pay for repair, you can sell off your powerups.
enemies need only a global balancing, because the game becomes harder through the disappearance of powerups alone.

"PC games biggest fault is that they need a quit button."
Why would I say that?
My first game computer was an Amiga. If you wanted to play a game, you would just put in the disk and reboot, and it would boot directly into the game and you would play it until you were blue in the face and then just switch disks, reset, or turn the thing off entirely.
So when I started playing games on PC, having "Exit" or "Quit" offered as an Option somewhere in the game, subconsciously, felt like a flaw.

but frankly, if we're looking purely at cost, i doubt that growing tomatos is worth it. they need 2 to 3 months. the buckets themselves amortize, but i need to water them every day. i had to buy compost, perlite and coir. i also bought tomato fertilizer. there's a consumer tax on all of this.
a professional would collect and use rainwater for irrigation, and source their own compost and fertilizer. then it might become a scalable operation.

I feel like I have to tie a bow around my life's work somehow, so I would not only have to be thankful for what I could consume. I have to Consolidate. Prune. Edit. Find closure. Prepare a hand-off. Ship it, and then, with some luck, watch it blossom elsewhere.

My mum, who is approaching her 80s, recently told me in an e-mail conversation that she finds the secret to joy and contentment more important than "you are the prisoner, the warden, the cell and the key", an insight from a 70s self-help book which I discovered in her library, but whose title escapes me.

The past weeks i've had, in quiet liminal moments, such sudden bouts of soul crushing forsakenness that it bordered on ego death. Except the release never comes. Instead, you just sit there, feeling the loss. Lamenting roads not taken. Goals not reached. No tears, just succ.
I don't think it means anything. Don't see how it could. It's just a thing that happens. If I believed in a god who received prayers, I'd probably do that and feel better. But my god only sees what is in the open. So there.

@nprofile…gj9s i want to pull some real trading data from somewhere and run some analysis on it, for some time now. then we could plot prices independent of time and see if patterns emerge, and how strong they are. then you'd know exactly how prevalent round numbers still are.

@nprofile…gj9s had the same idea. i think it's still viable to go against this, because in scale, human psychology still matters.
as i understand, there's two kinds of bots: ETF stuff, which follows human action and applies a low-pass filter to it all (really a genius piece of information engineering), and trader stuff which works on a daily level, exploiting spreads, tbh i don't know enough about this world, but it's nothing that tips scales.

to recap, stock tickers are sus to me for these reasons:
- no logarithmic projection by default means you don't see when a curve goes hyperexponential or growth flattens out. instead, it always looks dramatic.
- candles hide actual price intervals with thin lines; line charts use opening or closing price of the bracket rather than the median or average.
- the real quantity is price * volume, but only price is visualized.

on average, mastodon is more neurotic than bluesky, more sensitive and concerned, less neurotypical, but also more observant and subtle. there is a, shall i say, cognitive finesse to mastodon. the shells are not as thick. the guards are not up all the time. it's not a frontline to ignorance. neither was bluesky in the beginning, but i can sense they're suffering from their mass appeal.
we're not elitist on mastodon, just too dorky for the general public. that's our secret.

three days ago, for the first time ever, i flattened 3 pizza doughs to ready-to-decorate floors, separated them with baking paper, and put them in the freezer.
