Eesh, well either option would be quite an upgrade. Depends on your budget though ultimately. If you can swing a (7or 9)800x3d/mobo/ram you'll probably be set for a decade easily. Videocard is another story.

AM4 stock will be around for awhile still, and if you have ddr4 ram you can re-use that's a perk. Otherwise, you're in for a larger initial outlay, but am5 will be stable till past 2030 and you can upgrade again if the markets turn around.

Yeah that's shoegaze. The first example in the other post was pretty chiptune, but cute. You never know where a band is gonna lead you down.
I listened to MBV albums on tape loop for ages. I don't listen to whole albums at a time much anymore. But I have a few that I ripped to giant wav files aways back. And that's one of them. Always amusing when foobar is on the same track for 40mins a go. Aside from the couple 1 track albums I have.

Loveless is the gold standard for fuzzed out guitar wankery in the genre. He invented some kinda tech for it with the wammy bar.
The other option for that fuzzed out sound is Jesus and Mary Chain.

Sisters of mercy is pretty goth.
The Cranes has some fuzzed out guitars and the chicks vocals are pretty suitable. But they're not leaning 100% into shoegaze

Bandcamp has become the mega indie mart for better or worse. The local noise label here moved their shop there, as have many others. I was a fan of bandcamp for ages, bought tons of shit. Then they sold/got bought by epic. Killed my account with that. They're solo again iirc, but it's only a matter of time before some giant corpo assimilates them again. :(
That said, hell yes, buy some weird physical media from the bands. Especially on the presumably real fridays or w/e that all the cash goes to the artist.

bespoke minidisc releases would be pretty rad. I wonder about the general availability of media for it tho. Cassettes are weirdly in play still, but there's tons of those floating around still for re-use and peak analog hiss and jank for the noise-niks to package and distribute.

I think lobby shooters are great actually. One day hellgate london's promise will be manifest. Destiny kinda shit it's own bed, but Remnant and even Risk of Rain on the rogue side are great fun.
The type of game i'm looking for now is the variety where you are literally forced to group or fail*. Corpse runs, xp loss on death, de-leveling. The whole shebang. People are throwing a fit over having to use torches at night if they chose a race without infravision :Catlaugh: It's never gonna be a million seller- the devs know that and have seemingly realistic goals around that.
*pet classes are hax

2025-07-04 05:27:14 UTC

FF14... is a weird bird. You can totally solo through the entire game. Yes you'll have to group for a dungeon every couple levels. But... due to how the leveling works in the game and the incentive to queue up- you'll basically always get a group within a certain time frame.
That said the game is social as fuck. And there's good story in the raids to be had, or you can outlevel and just solo through the old stuff.
It's a divisive statement, but as far as story goes, ff14 is definitely the best. Though that's a cheaty award, since it's been going for a decade plus. I'd put an expansion or 2 in the top tier regardless.
But at this point, it's one of those things- where you have try to convice people to play through a decades worth of story where the first third is pretty rough.

2025-07-04 04:58:01 UTC

well modern mmos ultimately chose to either appeal to the lowest common denominator or the top 1% while making noises about the plebes.
Ultimately, I think ff14 had the right idea vs WOW, but not everyone can get behind the narrative first mmo that ff is. Too many i just wanna smash mobs people in the headspace. Wow has turned into a skeleton of an mmo being puppetmastered by an esports maestro that got sacked years ago, and few noticed.
People do suck in the games because the motivation structure got totally fucked with esport bullshit.
I'm mostly done with mmo's but I won't lie- i've been seriously hooked into the throwback EQ shit that monsters and memories has going on.

2025-07-04 04:41:01 UTC

- reply

I pretty much played it on release. So it was the closest thing to a mmo secret of mana that was available.
I loved it for the sprites. The grindathon is pretty tangential. It was shit then, it' sure it's worse now. I enjoyed it purely because it was dumb cute sprite based beating shit up and leveling. Yeah it's nostalgia. But if the companies that generated that nostalgia would decide that their fanbase are retards than make something that would appeal to their base... You dabbble with a quick fix.
If you were in the get to max level and that's when the real game starts mindset that has infected tons' -- i'm sure the game was infuriating.
