Hey just a random question for anyone administering/using a #matrix #synapse #homeserver;
Is it possible to "award" users with various roles such that their user profile image will have some form of badge/emoji relative to their role that can be set by the server, space or room administrator?
I would love to know if this is possible, or if not how one could achieve something similar or other such suggestions.

Well this week has bee a fantastic week for my son and his journey through #endof10
He decided he wanted to move to Linux as he didn't want Windows 11 and his Windows 10 was going EOL on Oct 14th.
He took his time choosing the right distro but ended up on #CachyOS for his computer, and so I helped him set it up and show him how to do some basic things like installing/uninstalling programs, I installed some programs he uses like Discord, Steam, Brave Browser, showed him how to import all of his bookmarks and saved passwords etc, and then set up Bitwarden for him to keep his saved passwords secure in my self hosted Bitwarden vault.
He's been using it for a couple of days now and so far I have had no complaints from him, I don't think I would anyway, he's eager to be fully transitioned over to #Linux and with the #KDEPlasma desktop environment we chose to use, I think he will be absolutely fine.
It feels like a great win for us, he was always solid into the Windows corner due to gaming, but when I showed him that gaming works flawlessly on Linux now we have all the goodies of vulkan and proton, that seemed to open his eyes into the possibilities, and now he's made the switch and all his games seem to "just work", he's one happy chappy.
Not to mention no longer beholden unto the Microsoft machine!

Today is Mother’s Day in the UK, not sure if it’s the same in many other places. Today I made my mum a nice afternoon tea as it’s one of her fave things to do. Sometimes I take her out to a nice swish restaurant for one, but today I made it at home for her.
She really appreciated being spoiled and having it at home meant she could feel more relaxed.

Since the terrible air crash at DC last week, I've been keenly using flightradar24 and learning a little about the things that go on, I enabled some notifications for Comms and general emergencies, and I keep getting notifications of them.
Are they common? More common that we think? What do these mean exactly?
Have I just made myself paranoid for no reason? Or are we not being told about something that happens far too often and is actually quite bad?

GTK, GTK+, and Qt are GUI toolkits. These are libraries that developers use to design graphical interfaces, all running on top of the X Server or Wayland. These are things that you need to install as dependencies. They're the Linux "equivalent" to Windows' GDI/GDI+. When an application uses any of these, it will usually have a general "look and feel".
GNOME and KDE are Desktop Environments. GNOME primarily uses the GTK+ toolkit, while KDE primarily uses the Qt toolkit. There are applications designed for GNOME or KDE, such as a settings menu or a default music player, usually in the appropriate toolkit. These Desktop Environments have a set of utilities/window managers/design specification to create a more unified desktop. You can mix the two if you feel like it, but you may run into issues with colliding standards and applications (which is a bit more common on systems like Arch).
Unity uses many of the GNOME utilities and backends (Nautilus, Rhythmbox, gvfs, etc.), so Unity is more GNOME than KDE.

well I'm no dev, I'm practically nothing more than a script kiddie at best, but what you say doesn't seem right to me. If I want to write sloppy code, and it breaks my system, that's on me. If I want to learn how to code cleanly and correctly, so I don't break my system, that's also on me.
Sounds like a lot of excuses for lazy code to me, from my uneducated way of thinking.
If this isn't how it is, then sorry, but that's how it comes across to me.

if you're putting all your trust in the compiler to keep you safe, wouldn't that lead to being taken down the path of bad habits? Surely it's better to learn how to keep your own code safe and not depend all your trust into a compiler?
The take away, for me, is this; if you can't write clean code and need something else to do it for you, learn. Learning makes you better, and being better makes you want to learn more.

in my country, beheading someone for any reason is against the law. In my culture I have grown up to know that beheading someone is wrong. So to correct your statement "You don't know whether beheading people for getting abortions is right or wrong?", I _DO_ know and have already explained it.
What you fail to understand is in other cultures, other laws, these things are allowed. It doesn't mean I agree with them, or promote them. I don't have the right to stop them existing either.

I'm not a conservative, I don't identify with any political bent. I wasn't defending slicing limbs off, I was merely stating fact that in some parts of the world their laws would have someone's hand taken off for stealing, where as in other parts you might go to jail. I don't tell the law makers if they're right or wrong, that's dictated to buy their culture. Use whichever point of view you like to judge that, but the fact remains cultures are different.

whether you agree or not with Lunduke or anyone else that has their own opinions, blanket blocking an instance or individual based on their opinions alone negates the idea of inclusion and what the fediverse is about.
If a person directly attacks you, block them all you want, but just because their views are different to yours isn't reason to block a whole instance or person

beheading people for any reason is wrong. There's no rhyme or reason to even consider that to be appropriate behaviour for any action or inaction. Who said that beheading was appropriate action?
The only thing I can say that although I don't agree with, different cultures, laws, beliefs, etc view things differently. So where you or I understand beheading to never be appropriate, there could well be cultures/religions/countries etc that might seem it appropriate...

That is a spicy topic but going back to my earlier point of Mastodon (at least my understanding of it) is that it is supposed to foster opinions from all angles, everyone is allowed to have their own opinion. Those wanting to "fediblock" are just trying to silence people that have differing opinions to them for reasons only known to them.
I have my own opinions on this and many other topics, I don't agree with some and do with others. I embrace the differences. That's inclusivity.

forgive my ignorance, but this just sounds like regurgitated nonsense. I've looked into lots of what Bryan says and while I might not share all of his opinions, I have never found anything he says to be bigoted or violent or anything negative. Unless I'm hugely niaive, the poor chap has been getting hate and threats from people who are supposed to be for inclusivity and rights for your own opinions.

the raid would only use the storage available for each disk based on the smallest available disk, so if 1 is 1tb then they all will only be using 1tb each iirc.
I would probably choose something other than R5 too, maybe R10 if you have 4+ disks, and one can be hotspare or something.
