Any #food technologists here?
There are preserves in #jars. There are preserves in #cans.
How does the decision to put food in one or the other get made?
I only see the difference in that glass jars are transparent, but do baked #beans really need to be kept in the dark?

I'm a bit wary about URLs because not everything needs to be based on DNS. If you hold any data at all at the URL, you have to deal with squatting, expiration, maintenance, and you also either have to find a host (and DIO shows that it's not really a thing) or doxx yourself to get the domain.
And if you're writing paradigm-changing anti-government manifestos, you want an ID but you don't want to doxx yourself.

What were the functions for which ISBN was created?
When I came up with the idea, I was thinking that a central database is optional for an identification system. We have Libgen for publications, WikiData for everything, IMDB for movies, and other inofficial ones. I wonder if times have changed since ISBN and a simple identifier could work.
A centralized-knowledge, decentralized-maintenance database could also mean IPFS or blockchain. The latter also could solve financing.

2026-08-10 18:02:55 UTC

Hey writers,
how about #ISBN, but decentralized?
Without the payment, the copyright, or the doxxing? For new #zines , manuals, novels; political, personal, or just chill? Digital and paper?
Is there any standard already which I just missed?

Mixed feelings. On one hand, mut restriction is something that's going to simplify my code. On the other hand, it adds more complexity to the language and puts nonobvious semantics on what used to be plain data fields.

I think it would be a lot easier in the world of Cyberiad. Our world is "winner takes all" and, so far, only the winners could concentrate enough resources to afford LLMs. Free software is about distributing power, LLMs concentrate it. You'd have to redistribute power *before* LLMs happened to make them more equitable.

There's no shortage of reasons to hate nvidia. They still don't offer an open driver, and they infected the GPGPU landscape with their closed stack. The scientific computing needs are still expensive. That's before you get to their role in the recent hardware-related booms that many people view unfavorably..

Practice: your non-LLM experiments will likely not get booted (but may still).

I know because on my low-value laptop, I just never click the "restart" button after updates download.
But there's maybe a way to have your cake and eat it too. I recently evaluated OpenSuse MicroOs. There, you can't just install packages to the root file system, but you can into snapshots.
And the cool thing, there seems to be a command to switch to the new OS image at runtime.
I don't exactly know what it does yet, though.

2025-10-05 10:34:01 UTC

I think that's kind of unavoidable when you want a safe option.
Okay, suppose we can keep using the computer while the updates are running, but then you have to restart it immediately.
Oh no, people are complaining that they don't want to interrupt their work with a restart! Fair enough, let them continue working. But what happens next? They will keep the computer running for ages because why would they restart?
Not restarting ends up an insecure default.

2025-10-05 10:03:49 UTC

- reply

I'm glad you didn't notice any problems. But that didn't mean you were immune from them.
If your kernel has a security vulnerability, and you install an upgrade but don't restart, you're still vulnerable to it until you restart.
Due to how Linux retains files that were once opened, the same counts for applications, including those with network access.
So restarting is the conservative, safe option.
Use unsafe no-restart updates at your own risk (I do).

My rule for buying into #technology is:
get the #software separately.
Buy a laptop → install #Linux .
Get a router → flash #openwrt .
Sign up to a messenger → Use an open client.
Browse a #web app → Use an unrelated browser.
Why? The vendor can't resist the control. I don't know why. They make the experience suck. Bloat, ads, locked features, antifeatures, phoning home. Even #OpenSource .
Independent software would not survive if it did that. People would install something else.

The code is here:
https://codeberg.org/libobscura/libv4l-stream/src/branch/master/src/io/dmabuf/arena.rs#L415
This doesn't cover a lot, and won't test kernel glue code at all - and glue is where most bugs are in my experience.
In the end, I decided to shove the complexity somewhere else, but at least the buffer manager can be tested somewhat.

2024-11-26 15:26:12 UTC

Trying to create complex #software managing kernel buffers.
This needs tests.
"#functional core, imperative shell" - Testing management should not need the kernel.
I started mocking with a generic backend. Looks annoying.
"imperative shell"
The mocked generic is becoming a spaghetti horror.
"functional core" - and then it clicked.
I separated just the buffer manager, made it generic over buffer type. I can now feed it fake buffers and test it.

Random advice:
If you're working on #camera #software after dark, turn on the light in the room.
Seriously.
You will save yourself time #git bisecting why your app is only displaying black.
This is totally random advice, no particular reason at all.

Hey #linuxmobile people.
Maybe you heard about my little #libobscura project.
Which phone should #libobscura support after #Librem5 ?
I'm looking for one which has the kernel drivers but cameras still don't work great.

#libobscura grand opening!
Libobscura is a friendly library to use cameras on Linux.
At least that's the goal.
The objectives are:
- hard to use it wrong
- get a RGB buffer in ten lines of code
- easy to add support for new devices
- no mailing list :P
I want #linuxmobile and other #photo and #video workflows to become easy, and manufacturers to spend less time adding support (hi me 2 years ago).

#libobscura is going through the final crunch... I mean, touches, before release.
I just realized the project page and the #readme are like continuous announcement posts. For some people, it's going to be the first contact with your work, so tell them;
- are they the intended audience?
- how do they benefit from this?
- where is the project going?
- how far along is it?
- how to try it out?

I can only reply with:
a lot of pipelines are five minutes.

2024-11-11 06:55:06 UTC

- reply

Okay, another comparison:
the 5 minutes pipeline costs 82.6kJ * (300s/1400)s = 82.6kJ * 0.21 = 18kJ (*2 for network=36kJ)
A liter of gas contains 33.6MJ per liter, with car efficiency at 20% it's 6.7MJ, at 3l/100km it's 33.3km, so 200kJ/km.
Every 5m pipeline run costs about as much energy as 200/36=222m by a small car.
How far from the office do you live? How many commits do you push upstream per ride?
We have much better ways to curb energy use than not testing software.

2024-11-11 06:01:41 UTC

- reply

For comparison, boiling a cup of tea needs about 82.6 kJ of energy.
My CI computer has a 60W power supply (so it can't draw more power than that - we're overestimating). The CI would need to run for 82.6kJ/60W ≅ 1400s ≅ 23 min to match it.
Make it half to offset the energy costs of network communication: 11min.
That gives two 5min pipelines for the price of one hot drink.
Would you drink a cup on every other commit if it saved you time and stress in the future?
I probably would.

If your pipeline takes 2 minutes and saves 2 hours in debugging and another 20 in working around the problem at the end user side - which is the case at least for me - then the sweet spot is quite clear.
> the best way to accelerate #climatecrisis
I call this a ridiculous statement. If running a computer for 5 extra minutes is comparatively so bad, we should reconsider software altogether.
There are many better ways to heat up Earth, related to transportation and manufacturng.

Oh, now I realized: most forges host underpriced runners, so they have a reason to have them run as little as possible.
Well, I set up my own runner on #forgejo for a single repo, so I have power to spare :P

2024-11-10 08:42:34 UTC

A piece of criticism to all code forges I know: why not run #CI on all commits?
A bad commit is a liability. It will break bisect and make debugging miserable.
#ForgejoActions takes it to the extreme and cancels an already running action when I push another change.
I get it - it's too slow and expensive to test them all when pipelines take minutes to run. But you could just pause the old ones until the newest one is finished!

Installing #Fedora on a #Surface go 2. For #libobscura, because it has a special #camera setup (IPU3).
Set BIOS to boot from USB stick? Still boots windows.
You have to boot Windows with the stick in and select a special "Linpus Lite" reboot option.
Except if the stick is in while Windows is running, it will get corrupted and fail verification.
And then the installer aborts while formatting 'device is in use'.
#Windows resists being removed → fsck #Microsoft ,.

#libobscura progress: a demo camera app!
So I've proved (some of) the concepts:
- API without segfaults
- zero-copy image passing
- GPU accelerated decoding
Yes, the picture is mirrored upside-down, why do you ask?
Next: clean up #GPU abstractions and publish a website.

Working on #libobscura today.
#OpenGL , #EGL , #glium , #glutin , #Rust , #v4l2 .
After 2 weeks of effort, the #GPU decoder COMPILES!
...The screen is green.
But hey, I actually know how to debug this :D It's almost as if 10 years of #debugging and #ReverseEngineering paid off!

I just found a way to let #Firefox use the #KDE file picker instead of the dreadful non-integrated #GNOME one :)
It involves enabling portal support:
In about:config set the key:
widget.use-xdg-desktop-portal.file-picker
to "1".
The "save" button is in the bottom right corner again :)

Remember internet.org? I heard in some places outside of Europe many people thought Facebook was the entire Internet.
It sounds like they want to tighten the grip on the rest of us. I hope this leads to an exodus back to the open Web,

#Coding #OpenGL for #libobscura right now.
Computers need to convert those #Bayer or YUV #camera streams to RGB quickly to present them!
I'm just converting my old code to #rust, but it was enough to remind me why I hate the OpenGL + #EGL + #GBM combo. APIs with implicit global variables can get lost.
Thankfully, I'm nearly done and can go back to shaders and algorithms :-) but using GLES 1.2 (the #Librem5 can't do anything better ;_; )

Are you compressing the cursor together with the rest of the stream?
Some games have a "harware cursor" option to reduce cursor latency, where it skips the game's rendering pipeline to arrive a few frames early.
Something similar could be helpful for streaming: send cursor position separately from the video stream, render it directly from a saved image without waiting for an entire frame to arrive.

@npub1fus…tvjp Can a Taler wallet be used securely in the form of a card?
That is, a smart card that people insert at point-of-sale terminals?
The browser extension takes care not just of the secret store, but also of all user interaction. Would there be a need to trust the terminal not to be compromised?
What's the plan for everyday shopping anyway?

Your analogy is technically correct, but it also switches things from "act of god" (mateorite) to "predictable" ("space objects are documented") in the middle. This messes up the intuition I was asking about, on top of being unrealistic because we can't predict which house will get hit by a space rock so we don't have social norms for that.
A better one:
"You inherit a building. The building has an electric fault. Next year the fault causes a fire. Who are you blaming?"
