"Political scientist Jun Koga Sudduth documented over 1,000 military purges across 116 authoritarian countries between 1965 and 2005. The pattern is the same everywhere. When a leader starts firing officers because they won’t blindly follow his orders, it almost always means one thing: the leader is afraid of being removed from office, and he’s eliminating everyone who could make that happen." #fascism #authoritarianism #military https://barbarafwalter.substack.com/p/trump-is-coup-proofing-the-military

I also this morning listened to a podcast from Deep State Radio called "Need to Know" which is focused on national security and a significant point of discussion was one that I've been making for years, always with a sense of great frustration -- that is, national security certainly does *include* the military but should be as much focused on citizens as it is on repelling military threats. National security should mean heavily investing in each person's health and education and those should be free because the tax structure enables it. No one should starve or be homeless in a secure nation. Every person should be able to access whatever level of education or trade training they desire for a rewarding life of purpose. Every person should have no middleman siphoning off cash, standing between them and their healthcare system. A country that does this will find it has the vitality and optimism that underlie *actual* patriotism. https://thedsrnetwork.com/the-real-reason-america-is-in-such-danger-right-nowand-the-solution

> They have told us, repeatedly and with great conviction, that the Islamic Republic is a death cult... If this is true...then the strategic conclusion that follows is the opposite of the one the war’s architects drew. A regime genuinely willing to die for its beliefs does not have a breaking point that airstrikes can reach. It has no incentive to back down. The calculus of Tehran, on the Trump and Netanyahu regimes’ own terms, is infinite escalation.

Finished #scifi #audiobook Slow Gods by Claire North. First time with this author but I'll definitely be checking out more. This story had the kind of world building I really like, with many different planets and cultures including technological beings and intelligent ships. Our protagonist comes from a brutal, hypercapitalist culture and due to an accident where he is enslaved to work off debts incurred by being alive, he ends up near death. To get the last inch of work out of his body they hook his brain up to a ship which will use him as a pilot to navigate arcspace. On the flight he is mysteriously changed, brought back as an apparently immortal and not quite normal being. He becomes a renowned pilot with the minor problem that if he's in the dark a new part of him can take over and tends to slaughter people nearby. On his travels he helps people, finds love and friendship of sorts, and tries to figure out the meaning of life. Very good. Excellent narrator I recognize from some Iain M. Banks audiobooks. I did have to slow it down though. ⭐ ⭐⭐⭐ #bookstodon

I guess we're at war with Iran now. The Trump criminal gang tried to come up with reasons for it but they were flailing. But I will tell you why he's ONCE AGAIN using the military to create a violent spectacle. Because a dementia-riddled, sadistic child rapist is desperately using enormous amounts of violence to distract himself from the fact that everyone in the world knows he's a child rapist. That's it.
But the fundamental reason why is because our neighbors, coworkers, and family members wanted an insane criminal and his gang of lawless thugs to take over the government, again, after he did things like kidnap thousands of children the first time around and some of them were never returned to their families, and all the moral injury and moral stain of Trump is on the shoulders of every American as long as we live. The U.S. is a diseased, sick country because almost half of its people are diseased, sick people.

"It is easy to believe we are watching an ending.
But scholars who study democratic collapse see it differently. “The United States is in a very good place to resist,” Steven Levitsky said recently. “There is a very high likelihood that Trump will fail.”
The regime dismantling our institutions does not command majority support. It never has. Trump’s approval ratings have remained underwater throughout his presidency. The policies being enacted poll badly, often catastrophically. This is not a popular revolution. It is a minoritarian project exploiting a counter-majoritarian system—and regimes built that way are inherently unstable. ...
My deepest fear is not that we fail to survive this moment—it’s that we survive it only to return to the status quo that made it possible. That we exhale, declare victory, and leave in place the Electoral College, the filibuster, the gerrymandered maps, the money-soaked elections that allowed a minoritarian movement to capture the state in the first place. The point is not to get back to normal. Normal is how we got here.
The wall looks permanent until the day it comes down. So it goes with all institutions. They are not immutable fixtures but human creations, designed to solve the problems of one era and replaceable when they fail the next." https://data4democracy.substack.com/p/the-wall-looks-permanent-until-it

Oh, barf. BARF
IV. The Strategy
1. Principles
President Trump’s foreign policy is pragmatic without being “pragmatist,” realistic without being “realist,” principled without being “idealistic,” muscular without being “hawkish,” and restrained without being “dovish.” It is not grounded in traditional, political ideology. It is motivated above all by what works for America—or, in two words, “America First.”
President Trump has cemented his legacy as The President of Peace. In addition to the remarkable success achieved during his first term with the historic Abraham Accords, President Trump has leveraged his dealmaking ability to secure
unprecedented peace in eight conflicts throughout the world over the course of just eight months of his second term. He negotiated peace between Cambodia and Thailand, Kosovo and Serbia, the DRC and Rwanda, Pakistan and India, Israel and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, and ended the war in Gaza with all living hostages returned to their families.

Today is my mom's birthday, she would have been 86. I was close to her until she voted for Trump and laughed about it, which broke my heart.
My dad outlived her by 2 years, during which I had few communications with him. He said during his last year that the previous year since mom died had been the worst year of his life. When I got a message from my oldest brother that dad had died, I was walking out of work with a coworker next to me. I said, stunned, "Oh. My dad died." My coworker asked if he could do anything for me and I said, no, we weren't close.
Every year on the anniversary of my younger daughter's death, it's one more spin of the trauma wheel for me, while the older one doesn't even remember the date. She says they weren't close, and that's true. They were separated by 6 years and a lot of unhappy family issues. I was very close to the younger one but never was close to the older. We try. It's not great. When I'm dead I think she'll tell people, "It's ok. We weren't close."

People -- such as USG decision makers -- don't seem to understand what these crappy LLM tools do. They don't know anything. They don't think. They're not smart. They don't reason. They just replicate patterns with whatever's in their training set. They'll plug bits and pieces of that together and might spit out something true, or might spit out something that's complete bullshit but fits a trained pattern. Someone has to get this through the brains of people in govt who spend money on this snake oil and use it to make very consequential decisions affecting people's lives.

I've never been threatened by a trans person. Never been harassed, abused, assaulted, or discriminated against by a trans person. Never by a gay person either. I've had all of those things happen to me but the perps were every single one of them cishet men.
So I don't need protection from trans people or any variety of LGBTQ people at all. People who claim that are not speaking for me, they are seeking to oppress me. What I need is for cishet men to unfuck themselves and learn to respect others' autonomy and right to live free from cishet men's aggression and odious dominance displays.

After the Musk rats break the Social Security system a lot of ignorant Trump voters are going to be surprised when their parents have to move in with them or become homeless. I guess then they can decide if the racism, misogyny, oligarchy, and Putin-fawning was worth it.

Current flu season is a 15-year high. Several children have died. News reports haven't indicated in all cases whether the children were vaccinated or not, but I have seen some of the reports noting children who were not.
#Flu vaccine doesn't necessarily prevent infection, and may not prevent getting sick. I got the flu several weeks after my vax this year. But it was bad enough that I'm sure without the partial protection from severe disease I got from the vax I'd have had to go to the hospital. #vaccines #influenza https://www.wral.com/lifestyle/health/9-year-old-randolph-county-girl-flu-death-january-2025/

Vile comments on USArmy Xitter account demanding the 3rd crew member's name from the crash in DC. If not for Trump's despicable attacks on DEI this grieving family wouldn't have had to ask the Army to withhold the copilot's name. He did this, his goons did this, and these are his online terrorists. Trump is a terrorist leader. #military #DOD

State Dept has changed "LGBT" to "LGB" on its travelers tips page. https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/before-you-go/travelers-with-special-considerations/lgb.html
Still shows up in page preview but the word is missing from the page. I don't really get it. I thought Trump and his handlers were attacking all LGBTQ plus other DEI categories, i.e., POC and women (but wait, they're "defending women"!). But there doesn't have to be any rhyme or reason in an authoritarian state.

So they say they're cutting 70% of the government. Update: They're cutting 70% of *OPM.* That's for now. The rest is coming.
The plan will be to privatize almost the entire government. Everything that can be sold off to billionaires will be. Think of a corporation that sucks like, say, Comcast, running essential parts of society. Parts of your life. And you still have to pay taxes, plus now, new fees for all the things that the govt used to do without businesses involved. Like weather forecasts you can get free now, you'll have to pay for. Maybe some things will just disappear because they're inconvenient for megacorporations, like food safety or environmental safety.

Alabama #libraries put new restrictions on kids, and you now can't get an adult library card until age 19. Nutjobs! Why is this happening? State funding. This is what happens when almost all candidates in elections from dog catcher to governor are unchallenged Republicans. That's Alabama.
“This (collection review) is being done to be in compliance with our collection development policy which was recently approved by Alabama Public Library Service,” Chow said. “These updates were required by APLS in order for the library system to receive state funding that is vital to the continued operation of some of our smaller library branches.” https://www.alreporter.com/2024/11/29/huntsville-library-moving-animated-disney-movies-after-policy-changes/

They don't care if they lose, the plan is to claim victory. Whether they actually win or lose is immaterial to the plan.

in other news, on Friday Trump said "I have a very fertile, a very fertile, brain"
On Sunday he proposed noted stable genius Herschel Walker could be put in charge of missile defense. Oh yeah, and he suggests building a missile defense shield over the entire extent of CONUS (it does not need that nor could we afford it in a million years).
