so from the overall podcast-world perspective:
- bad for RSS-based podcasting apps: they will rely on hosting companies optionally including HLS in the feed, or having a similar process of direct upload/association
- good for podcast hosting companies: once they are allowed in

And keeping it limited also makes content moderation easier for them - it's one thing having an app that plays audio from anywhere on the internet, but video from anywhere on the internet opens up new horrific cans of worms

It's too bad it's limited to four hosting companies right now (Acast, Amazon's ART19, Sirius XM's Simplecast and iHeart's Omny Studio), but I expect that will grow over time. Very nice that they can continue to host the content/ads, w/ Apple only taking a cut of the latter.

@nprofile…vfcp in an attempt not to overcomplicate things, I think the overall principle is to help distinguish requests to media urls (mp3s/mp4s) made by actual human listeners in prod vs requests to media urls made by... not that with as simple a pattern as possible.
If it were me, I'd use the main podverse ua (e.g. "Podverse/") almost everywhere, but use a test ua (e.g. "PodverseTest/" or "PodverseDev/") for non-prod, and use a clear bot ua (e.g. "Podverse Bot/") for any non-listener media requests.

it's like they all decided at the same time to hit the gas recently (last few months) with mass slop production, after testing out with one or two shows earlier in the year
I guess the glass-half-full view is that many hosting companies are making it super simple to upload tons of stuff, good jorb guys!

@nprofile…j90y just listening to Podnews Weekly - and got to the part where you are talking about the HLS you are doing in audio for Podnews Daily. That's a good first step, but are you planning to change that to video at some point? (even if it's a reencode of your existing mp4)
imo HLS in podcast feeds are only needed to bring high-quality _video_ playback experiences to RSS, they offer zero benefit if on-demand audio only

I think it's important any scheme like this should be completely backwards-compatible with existing player apps - i.e. have a graceful user exp for existing podcast apps that will never change to adopt this.
If I understand your doc correctly, the fallback mechanism is "won't download/stream at playback time", which imo is not good enough.
