I pay $12/mo including daily backups with Linode. That's 360/year, so $100 for hosting is a great deal if that is all you need. To me it seems shadier to go with WP Engine, as it is extracting value from use of the software, for which it returns little. I think the problem is the way that [@photomatt](https://mastodon.social/@photomatt ) approached this issue, rather than it not being a problem.
