Because I'm as pedantic as y'all are, I want to get in here and um actually myself before anyone else does. Technically, the Supernote A6 X2 Nomad supports all of these specs except for the frontlight, which is very much the softest requirements. So why am I ignoring it? Well, I'm not ignoring it, I have a Supernote A6 X which I use all the time and carry with me every day. But. Although you can easily run Android apps on these devices and Ratta even provides instructions and tells you to go nuts with sideloading if that's your kink, the app support is in practice extremely poor. There's a reason it's not officially supported: the device's specs just aren't cut out for mainstream Android apps. Most apps kinda work basically, but many (including important-to-me ones like Reader) are basically unusable with how slow they feel on this device. I know that the A6 X2 Nomad is somewhat faster, but I have it on good authority (numerous Reddit complaints) that it's not actually fast enough to run Android apps in general — as opposed to being able to sideload things and having a few apps which are usable and many which aren't. So, honorable mention to Ratta's devices which I absolutely love. And I absolutely applaud their commitment to repairability and to building a device which meets their exacting standards (there's no frontlight, for instance, because it would make the writing experience worse). But for now, I'm planning to get the new Boox unless Ratta release a faster Supernote A6 and an EMR stylus with a little flashlight in its tip to compensate for the lack of frontlight.

Good news! Boox announced an updated second generation of their Go 7 Color tablet. (Do not get me started on their product naming conventions.) It looks like a mild software update to Android 13 and the addition of stylus support.
The addition of stylus support means that Boox is the first to make a device to hit the truly unreasonable and demanding spec intersection of: small (7-8"), color epaper display, frontlight, SD card slot, Android apps, Bluetooth/Wifi, and hand-written notes. We've had the technology, folks, it's just taken a while for someone to integrate it! Surprisingly, it doesn't seem to use a standard Wacom EMR digitizer — the stylus they sell for it has a USB-C port and needs to be charged. Maybe that's just the tradeoff they made for having a frontlight?
All these Android-based epaper tablets are truly embarrassing in terms of Android OS versions. A brand new device on 13, two versions behind? Please, I'm begging you, hire another Android engineer. I will pay more for the device if you port your custom support and OS skin up to the current OS/API version.

Why do some people have a problem with trade deficits? I confess that I very much do not understand international relations and know very little about this topic. But to me, a trade deficit seems like a good thing?
If one country sells a billion dollars of goods to another country, we call that a trade deficit on one side and a trade surplus on the other. If instead, they both sell a billion dollars of goods to the other, there's no surplus/deficit because those numbers are the same. If I go to the grocery store and buy ten dollars of food, we just call that spending money to buy stuff. I don't expect to have ten dollars of stuff the store wants. In fact, a very useful property of money is that I don't need to care what the store wants, because money is like a universal trade wildcard. But no matter which way around it is, nobody is getting something for nothing. It's just a way of counting up the prices of all those purchases.
However, especially if the buyer is the US, dollars are basically made up — the US doesn't have to do anything to "earn" dollars, they're kinda just IOUs. Of course the US wants everyone to continue valuing & accepting US currency, but that's the only limit. If people in the US spend a billion dollars importing goods from other countries, the US as a whole has gained actual stuff which makes people happy, and has lost an imaginary accounting fiction which it can top up any time. This seems way more like getting something for nothing. Having a trade deficit means that people want your IOUs specifically rather than demanding hard goods in exchange.
What am I missing here? What's the counter-perspective?

The political movement for privatization was based on the (unproven) idea that because markets can theoretically be efficient, so therefore private contractors' competition & profit motive would encourage them to provide services more efficiently and for less. That's a bit of a silly idea, because the service goals of private companies and of government services are not the same. The government has a moral responsibility to serve everyone equitably, including (for instance) making sure packages can be mailed to distant parts of the country affordably. Private enterprise just… doesn't do that? Contractors are incentivized to raise their prices, drop their quality, pocket the difference, and ignore negative feedback. What's the public going to do, not use essential government services? They're monopolies in many ways. And, in practice, that is exactly what has happened following the privatization wave of the late 20th century. Wups!

I learned many useful skills in school. But one which I think would have been difficult to develop as well elsewhere was the practice of precise measurement & diagramming, along with good & effective habits in other fabrication/making/construction skills.
I know that these are the sorts of things you often get through folk practices and helping your parents with bricolage. But I really appreciate having been trained in these skills by actual engineers. Different people learn different ways and formal education was definitely the right way for me to learn.
I'm particularly thinking about this because my partner & I are changing up our living situation right now and doing a lot of measuring to fit, gentle modification, and little construction tasks. I cannot express how useful it is to be able to make neat & precise diagrams which I have in my pocket at the hardware store or when browsing components & materials to order. Thank you, Dr. Gary Nava (RIP) & Chris Fry! Your instruction serves me well to this day!

I love stuff. I enjoy things. I appreciate objects. We are living in a material world and I am a material girl. I follow EDC influencers. I have opinions about my favorite weight of Dyneema and which sort of surface finishes for Titanium are best. I have tried every heckin’ wallet out there. Every single one. You simply cannot point out a wallet I have not tried or considered.
And yet? The best wallet I’ve ever used is still just a couple of ranger bands and a maybe a money clip. Some sliced up pieces of bike inner tube and a folded piece of metal.
It's just: wrapping & folding any sort of fabric around cards is always going to be bulkier than… simply not doing that? All you need is for them to stay together? And still remove one at a time? It's not a difficult task, but every option is over-engineered. I want to optimize everything, but I also need to change things up from time to time, and nothing is more flexible than a rubber band. And my wallet fits in the watch pockets on my pants.

Fellow nerds, I have been wondering about a small (~7"?) color epaper tablet for reading & note-taking.
I already have all my media in epub, m4b, pdf, & cbz formats. I’d like to just put those on a big SD card and have the device know what to do with them. Audiobooks mean Bluetooth for headphones, and comics ask for a good quality display with color support.
I want to use the Reader app for articles as well as installing other reference apps like Kiwix, dictionaries, and probably sudoku, so I’m looking for a device with Wifi, Android, and the Play store (even if it's stuck on an older version of Android). A cellular modem is nice but not necessary.
I’m much less discriminating about note-taking than I am about books. I currently use an iPad mini with the Notes app and Apple’s stylus. That standard write/draw-on-screen plus folder organization functionality seems like I all I need.
I’m not an artist; I don't need fantastic drawing support. I would like the lines I draw to show up on screen without an infuriating delay, and I’d love to be able to draw in color. Best case scenario: the stylus is neatly kept in place when stored by a folio case which doubles as a stand.
I’d love to be able to access my notes on other devices, especially my phone and laptop. Hopefully any device built with stylus note-taking and Wifi does some sort of automatic sync from its native note-taking app. But I know I sometimes have unreasonable expectations.
Does such a combined & compact device exist? Or am I asking for too much and bound to settle for separate devices for reading, writing, and listening? How close can I get to my goal with tradeoffs; which features do I need to sacrifice?
(Please do not suggest a manufacturer in general: I am looking for a specific tool. Please do not suggest much larger devices. Please do not suggest something which doesn't match what I think I need unless you are using it to explain a requirements tradeoff. Thank you for being considerate.)

A request is more intimate and personal, implying that it might be granted based on the requestee's relationship with the requester. An ask is an institutional thing, delivered with a faceless expectation that it will be accomplished because of the corporate interrelationship between the asker and the asked. I have a request, and if you grant it that's a favor. My team has some asks, and when they are delivered, that will simply be the ordinary course of business.
This isn't all that goes into these words; I'm just trying to highlight where I think they've split.

Whenever I wander around the neighborhood, I'm sure to spot at least one pickup truck which boggles my mind. I can stand in front of these things and not see over the hood, just face to face with chromed grille. I am 5'11" (180cm). I simply do not understand how anyone can operate one of these things and have even the slightest confidence that they're not going to flatten people every time they make a turn through a crosswalk. Seeing these things next to "normal" cars would be comical if it weren't terrifying. I've seen them protrude a foot or more into the roadway compared to the cars they're parked next to. I know that US cars have been growing for decades as a result of some decidedly misguided emissions standards. But seeing these things out there in the world is truly bizarre. It's like seeing a creative perspective-based trompe-l'œil, except that it's real and it can hurt you.

Need to tighten a hard-to-reach bolt whose head is entirely covered by another part, completely preventing anyone from getting a bit into it without taking apart three other things? Sounds like another mission for the Knipex Cobra XS, an adorably tiny set of extremely good pliers!

I made an appointment last week to get the seasonal flu vaccine and the updated Covid vaccines today. This was at a major national pharmacy chain (not the one which voluntarily pulled Plan B from its shelves). I was not successful at getting vaccinated. I'm grumpy about it.
I went to the location at which I made the appointment. They couldn't find my appointment in their system. They even went as far as telling me that my appointment was actually at another location. But they didn't actually have any vaccine in stock anyway. They were turning away other people with appointments.
[I went to the other location, and they were very clear that I did not have an appointment there, and actually printed out my appointment info so that I have something to show the first location. Though that location was also turning people away, saying that their appointments were at other locations, including the one which doesn't have any vaccine.]
And they didn't seem to have any way to efficiently reschedule. If they couldn't give you the vaccine because they didn't have stock, you're just out of luck. Make a new appointment online, I guess? Though do note that they're basically all booked up for the next two weeks — which is how far in advance their booking system goes.
So everyone who got their act together early to book their flu & Covid vaccines as soon as possible has their appointments pushed back by weeks, during a spike.
I called back the first location to ask if there were any faster way to reschedule, and they basically told me to pound sand and wanted to get me off the phone as fast as possible. They did say that they were expecting a vaccine shipment tomorrow. I think I'm just going to go back to the first location tomorrow morning and ask them to honor yesterday's appointment.
But what a mess. What utter nonsense. You shouldn't need an appointment to get a vaccine. You should just be able to walk in to any pharmacy anywhere and get it. But if there is an appointment system, people who make appointments should get vaccinated. It should be hard to avoid being vaccinated, rather than a challenge even if you do everything right.
