Look: Mhy point is this is an ongoing campaign. You cannot keep people under one religion's rule indefinitely unless you are using sustained force and propaganda. No one in power stays in power without those things. Christianity is no different. The people's crusade much earlier was also about expelling pagans, and this continued through the 14th century, and then continued in the form of witch hunts for centuries after. And we are still warring about it today.

I guess the point of confusion is this. There were lots of crusades. But in the 1400's, when they were in the north, most of it was about paganism, even if at some points in history it was about infighting among monotheisms.

The crusades lasted until the 1400's. Until right before the printing press. And the purpose was to wipe out paganism and install Christianity.

Half of all Catholics are women because they live in countries that enforce catholicism. Through things like propaganda. Or the Crusades. Or witch hunts They dominated the culture. That is not proof that they are not oppressive or that there is no resistance, or that they respect women. It's kind of like saying, "How can slavery be bad when I have so many slaves! Look at all the black people participating in this institution!" There wasn't a choice.

What has to be kept in mind is that Judeo-Christianity is and always has been a patriarchal reaction to paganism--which includes pantheism, polytheism and all magic based spirituality--anything not monotheistic. You can see this in the Bible itself, particularly in the ways women's roles are described, the story of Jezebel, and the references to paganism in Revelations. The witch hunts were about killing women who did not conform and who had agency--enemies of Christianity.

Also, while a printing press is fast, it's not fast like social media. So it takes a little bit of time for this to spread and be whipped up into a frenzy. So by the time we get to the 1600's the witch hunts have become a true gendercide.
But regardless, my initial argument is that Christianity's stranglehold worldwide was clenched by the printing press. Which is not to say that the printing press isn't turned towards different purposes once we have the enlightenment.

Of the witch-hunts starting in the 1400's, you mean. Well, when an authoritarian entity like the Catholic Church stops going on crusades, resting easy is not something they can really do, because authoritarian grip has to be held at all times, particularly when the church itself is fracturing internally. Something like a printing press is taken up by such authoritarians to mass produce the culture, and to train people to hunt witches on their own. Kind of like social media.

You can tell what happened by the ways in which Christianity tried to squash it. If you can't see the wind, you have to look which way the leaves rustle to find the source.
We know that the crusades meant people did not give up their religion or traditions without violence. We know that when Christians started printing things, they printed manuals on how to hunt witches, pagans, demons. We know that references to old traditions continue in art. I feel like I'm giving sources.

If I believe in fairies, and I appeal to them more than I do Jesus, I am a pagan, according to Christians. Also, there is no evidence of polytheistic worship because the temples didn't survive. That doesn't mean anything for how people live their lives. It would be very strange if the Christians let survive anything that would help people worship publicly. A deletion of record does not mean a deletion of activity.

And (sorry to hammer on, but I'm doing some refresher reading), the Catholic church may not have felt a threat from rural pagans so much, but they were undergoing deep threat in the 14th century because of the western schism, and multiple people claiming to be the rightful holder of the papacy. but they were also very wary of new converts from Judaism and Islam by this time.

Non-monotheists, and the enjoyment of traditions that do not promote the dominance and authority of the Catholic church on people's lives are who I'm talking about. There are endless references to fairies, goddesses, witches, alchemy and general paganism even in Shakespeare's plays centuries later. It has never been wiped out. I'm not talking about wicca.
The books on hunting witches were about hunting people who did not conform to the church. This happened after the printing press. There is no world in which people gave up their beliefs without propaganda or threat of violence.

That's definitely good historical perspective to keep in mind! One thing I'll note is that in rural, pastoral settings, paganism and folklore continues to be a major part of the culture, in spite of/mingled in with Catholicism. So while the dominant culture remains unthreatened, an expectation of true conformity, I think (not a historian) is not quite as prevalent until, for instance, it becomes popular to hunt non-conformists, spurred by propaganda.

Now, I live in 2026. I'm glad I can read, I'm glad I can buy books, I'm glad I can self-publish. So even though fuck a printing press, I'm happy to keep it.
But let's not look at the printing press as something that was made with the public good in mind. It was made with religious propaganda in mind. And that is ALL that AI shares in common with the printing press.

What happened before that? An oral tradition of poetry. Which, of course, anyone can access in one form or another. It promoted gathering, listening, and communal catharsis. It promoted skills in memorization and public performance.
By the time the printing press made reading and printing accessible to everyone, those skills had died out, and new technology was on its way to supplant the good the printing press brought the masses.

The printing press also has one major advantage that AI doesn't have: It promoted use of a skill that people were empowered to develop: Reading.
AI, on the other hand, and pretty much all of tech culture, ruins human skills, by allowing robots to take over those skills for us.
But when the printing press first came out? It is only benefitting the elite who can already read, who then dictate the culture to the masses.

Because I advocate for supporting the arts all the time, people often ask me how they can help support artists--and, of course, you can do that by buying their work and spreading it around. But I'll tell you something artists really need:
Affordable spaces to self-produce shows.
Not spaces where whatever profit you make has to go entirely to the space, because it costs as much as you could possibly make in ticket sales.
If you have access to a suitable space, make it available.

Of course not, as no one is asking the people for their input on this. In fact, in California, there are laws prohibiting cities from pushing tech out, even if, hypothetically, it was found they posed health risks--that part is stipulated. The push for AI is an arms race, and it has already been stipulated that we don't get a say. Which means if we want a say, we will have to take it by force. But with AI spitting endless propaganda, it's that much harder to organize around reality

The only thing I'm certain of is that however he redraws the map, the tech lords will somehow be the only ones who benefit. Everything Newsom does is for them. And quite likely Putin, as well. When I called his office and asked if he supported an authoritarian Russian takeover of the US, his phone rep panicked and would only commit to "I don't know." I feel like the answer to that should pretty obviously be "No" for the Governor of California. I hope I'm wrong.

Art kills crime. Never mistake the arts for frivolous. They are the cornerstone of democracy.
Fun fact: a program called "Shakespeare Behind Bars" helps inmates put on the classics. The recidivism rate among participants? 6%. The recidivism rate in the general population? 68%.
We do not know how to empathize and build the world without the arts. It's downfall is why democracy is in free fall. If you want to save it, put the arts first. Every zip code should have full time artists.
