There are endless references to fairies, goddesses, witches, alchemy and general paganism even in Shakespeare's plays centuries later. It has never been wiped out. I'm not talking about wicca.

The books on hunting witches were about hunting people who did not conform to the church. This happened after the printing press. There is no world in which people gave up their beliefs without propaganda or threat of violence.
