I am revisiting my homemade mastodon client which renders the page on the server like we used to in the old days

2026-07-01 21:51:29 UTC

fact 1:
the mastodon default frontend periodically pokes the api to check if there's anything new on the home timeline. it does this even if you are not on the home timeline.
fact 2:
i am looking through my old posts, and have opened several of them in separate tabs.
logical result:

Near where I live, there's a tower on a hill on the horizon. This is a photo I didn't take of that tower, standing proud in the evening light, the moon alongside it peeking through a gap in the clouds.
I knew my phone wouldn't do it justice, and I knew if I went back for my SLR the moment would've passed before I got back, so I just enjoyed it for myself, and then continued on my walk.

kodak is actually two companies; eastman kodak manufactures the film, kodak alaris distributes it (nitpick: alaris distributes *stills* film, *motion picture* film was always handled by eastman)
recently, eastman has started distributing film directly to consumers (nitpick: in the US only) with name changes where alaris presumably holds the trademarks
portra is now being sold as ektacolor, so rest in peace "porntra"

I tire of the everything box
I crave the tactile
buttons should feel like buttons
not fingers on glass
the only thing it does right is letting me adjust the volume without looking
remember buttons?
remember owning something and knowing it so intimately that you could identify each button, each knob, each switch, from touch alone?
I love my film SLR
every button, every switch, every dial has a purpose
I can adjust the exposure compensation without looking because It’s a physical knob with click stops
same for the aperture ring on the lens
same for every single aspect of it
every function is a distinct mechanical part with its own feel
I could probably load film into it blind if I needed
maybe I’ll try that sometime
