Claiming to fight antisemitism while practicing Islamophobia isn't only morally incoherent. It's also profoundly stupid because these bigotries often travel together. One of the best predictors of whether an American holds bigoted attitudes toward Jews is whether they hold bigoted attitudes toward Muslims

One of the advantages of robotically calling accusations of human rights violations against Israel antisemitic is that don't have to know anything about what Israel has actually done.

Tucker Carlson deserves credit for opposing the Iran War, denouncing Trump + giving Palestinians what Edward Said called "permission to narrate." I wish he didn't peddle white nationalism + antisemitic conspiracy theories. If he stops, I'll be thrilled. But he does. And people who interview him need to call him on it.
Here's what he just told @npub1p2d…rprp about Trump's decision to attack Iran: "He’s not a man in charge of his own life at this point. I feel sorry for anybody who’s enslaved." https://www.cjr.org/the-interview/all-i-have-is-the-power-to-talk-and-be-heard-tucker-carlson-interview-pitying-trump-podcast-new-third-party-nicotine-pouch-alp-fox-news-fired-anti-war-gaza-immigration.php
That's absurd. Trump has near-dictatorial powers over his party. He's not "enslaved" by Bibi or Miriam Adelson. It's part of Carlson's effort to exonerate the US, which he considers a dumb but well-meaning empire snookered by crafty, malevolent Israel.
Interviewers need to call him on this stuff.

My experience has been the same. For goodness sake, Amira Hass--a Jewish Israeli--lived in Gaza for four years and has lived in Ramallah ever since. The idea that Palestinians can't tell the difference between a Jew, even an Israeli Jew, and a soldier or settler coming to do them

Jeff was born in 1965, when Israel held its Palestinian citizens (the ones who weren't expelled) under military law. When was two, Israel conquered the West Bank, Gaza + East Jerusalem + began holding millions of Palestinians without citizenship. When was this golden age?

People who dislike Israel should not conflate it with American Jews -just as people should not conflate the PRC with Chinese Americans or ISIS with American Muslims.
And (not but) synagogues should not say "We stand with Israel" because it encourages that conflation. It makes congregants less safe but, more importantly, given what Israel is doing, it's morally indefensible.
It's like a Russian Orthodox church saying "We stand with Russia" after the invasion of Ukraine. https://peterbeinart.substack.com/p/lessons-from-the-michigan-synagogue

Your response to a swastika at a yeshiva is to condemn the mayor for condemning it? Because that might imply that antisemitism is a "real social phenomenon?" Yes, like other bigotries, it's a "real social phenomenon." If you don't believe me, ask the 1 million people who follow Nick Fuentes on this platform

It's astonishing how quickly the politics are moving. The Democrats now deserting @npub1ztd…cv99 aren't supporters of Palestinian rights. They're ambitious politicians who see which way the winds are blowing. They don't fear @npub1ztd…cv99. They fear being associated with @npub1ztd…cv99. I'm overjoyed the hostages were released. But the reality of the Trump plan is this: Roughly half of Gaza will become like Area C of the West Bank, largely off limits to Palestinians. The living space for Palestinians in Gaza-already one of most overcrowded places on earth-will be cut in half. Israeli will control all access in and out. https://jewishcurrents.org/what-israeli-victory-looks-like

Laura nicely illustrates the absurdity of the IHRA definition of antisemitism, which says that comparing Israel's actions to the Nazis is an example of antisemitism. But there's nothing about being Jewish that makes you immune from speaking-and even acting--like a Nazi. Recognizing that is part of recognizing Jews as fully human.

This language is so common that we forget how Orwellian it is. Self-determination is determination of the self, not others. When you deny millions of people citizenship in the land of their birth because they're the wrong religion, that's not self-determination. It's apartheid.

Israel's defenders think the world isn't sufficiently outraged by crimes in, say, Burma. So here's a crazy suggestion: Don't just invoke Burma to exonerate Israel. Actually focus on Burma. The Free Press could launch a crusade to let Rohingya refugees into the US. It could do some good.
