Crazy good garden this year and so very thankful. But I seem to have a glut on the veg side of things as my farmer friends already keep me well supplied. So I'm considering turning my beds over to more unusual plants and more medicinal herbs instead. I'm going to chat with some chefs in town and see if they'd like some
edible flowers or whatnot, or if I can grow something specific for them. I've been harvesting every day, definitely in my happy zone.
What unusual plant or herb would you grow if given the chance?
Four of my five potato bags look amazing, the garlic is ready to pull, and the plums, figs, and apples are coming in strong.
My chicken coop is almost finished and ready for a fresh batch of birds from someone wanting to downsize their year old hens. I'm really ready to retire from a decade-plus of chicken tractoring; hope I can keep the yard decent by limiting the size of the flock on it and perhaps dividing up the yard into sections. We shall see.
The deer did finally discover the buffet 🤨 so I've been trying to thwart them without getting yet another outside dog (my maremma died of old age, there's no replacing him).

White wheat is typically used for lighter/pastry like bread, red wheat is far "heartier" with a stronger flavor. I typically like to blend the two (like 1/3 to 2/3) but ultimately it depends on what you're baking and if you want more rise or more flavor. I don't get good rise at all with fresh ground whole wheat when I am baking a true sourdough without adding some all purpose. Sifting the ground wheat helps but it's a big pain and you lose a lot of bran.
Some starters are more robust than others as well. I find a good Russian starter the best rise for ww sourdoughing. https://sourdo.com/

It's wet and grey again (hello, June Gloom). It's a good time to play with paints and read a book (currently This Light Between Us...how our own gov't deported our own Japanese brothers and sisters in the early 40's even while the Jewish people were getting deported throughout Europe).
Seems to me that dividing people is nothing new, an old scheme from the devil that works again and again. The Screwtape Letters is an interesting read for similar schemes.

Fresh baked sourdough focaccia today with the first snips of rosemary and lemon thyme in between garlic cloves and sun dried tomatoes. I ate way too much of it but it was worth it.

I'm good; I know how the story ends 😉
My washer, dryer, and oven all quit within days of each other which was a ton o'laughs. And I still don't have my van back that was stolen and is supposedly getting repaired. First world problems!
But today is the first real warm day here (high of 65! Whoohoo!) and the gardens are puttering along and the kids are all well and good so I'm counting my blessings and watching the barn swallows swooping in open areas between the cedars.

My nonverbal kid is doing ammmmmazing learning how to spell to communicate. This is only "amazing" if you've never had a chance to know what's in your kid's head without guessing (and hoping you aren't wrong) until it gets unlocked by some miraculous hand of God. All these words were spelled on letter boards with effort and persistence. It's crazy how these kids already know how to spell everything (amygdala?!) and do split second math. I bought myself some mom day flowers. I'm gonna love whatever cards and whatnot my kids give me but 🤷‍♀️ I happen to love peonies and ranunculus and used it as an excuse to treat myself. Plus I needed something in that porch corner 🌸
I've grown ten babies, sadly lost one of them, and to this day rarely get an uninterrupted night's sleep. I wouldn't trade these beautiful and incredible people for anything, but if I can buy myself some flowers in celebration of them, I'm gonna be good with that.

I'm about finished in the garden, everything has transplanted well and looks good. Garlic planted last fall looks great, too. This year I'll have to pay attention to watering but next year's project will definitely be adding drip. I've got some thinning to do, two more beds to plant with green beans and whatever else, and a spot on the ground ready for all the squashes. A few stragglers remain under the dining room grow lights (flowers, mostly), but I've got room now for whatever interesting starts I find at the nurseries now. Seedlings are sprouting and I can't wait for my flowers to bloom!
Speaking of blooming, lots of that going on here. Gah...mock orange is a wonderful scent. Forget-me-nots and bluebells are everywhere!
Lord willing, now it's just keep everything watered, keep the weeds down, and enjoy the harvest.

I finally got a good look at my van that was recovered (it had been stolen). I really want to knock the thieves heads together, shaming their mamas and all. They even used my ice chains to rip out the seat for whatever reason. They abandoned it stuck deep into mud on the side of the road.
Insurance is supposed to pay for it but it's still 500 bucks out of my own pocket for the deductible. $500 for their joy ride that I could have used in so many places. At least the kids' car seats were still there and the van tested clean of drugs (I insisted on testing).
And.
I learned when I got home from TX that the drive shaft on my pickup literally fell off onto the ground 😫 Another 200 bucks, at least.
There's nothing I can do about any of that. So I transplanted my tomatoes into their little red greenhouses, planted potatoes, and enjoyed the massive apple blossoms outside.
I refuse to let morons or other crap that happens rob my joy.

In other news, purple sprouted broccoli is almost $4 at the supermarket. It's one of my favorites so I bought a bunch (not to share), but it is definitely going back into my garden. As much as I hate starting a garden from scratch (AGAIN), I'm looking forward to, God help me, incredible harvests.

I have a small shed I'm converting into a coop, too. I'm second guessing getting more chickens. I've had both chickens and ducks, and ducks seem to do better where I am. Either way, next year will be great with all that bedding!

Finished up @npub1587…kv0n compost class and surprised myself with how much I learned (100% on the last quiz 💃). Gathering materials to build my first bioreactor this weekend! It was really helpful also watching the videos of the in-person class he did last autumn. So, one of the best things I got out of the course was to "be fearless", so I grabbed a wheelbarrow of last year's leaf and woodchip piles to add to my new beds. And waddaya know there were a TON of happy worms in there!! 👀 I accidentally made compost! 😂 I also dusted in some plant fertilizer and kelp. We shall see; the experimentation is kinda fun.

I know I'm working hard right now bc this is a new place for us, and I'm not getting any younger so I want to get systems (and perennials) in place sooner rather than later. I actually enjoy working in the dirt, but I also like the aspect of doing work that will enable me to eat more from my own backyard. Sounds like you're on the other side of doing all of that?

Got a couple rows of raspberry canes in today beyond the rhubarb I moved, and the ducks and hens are happy with the soil at the moment. I've got to get the trellises up, horse before cart and all that nonsense as it currently is.
Anyone have any idea what's up with the big zit on my old hen?

I've been popping on and off here slightly amused by the "trending" topic of women not feeling welcomed here 🙄 I'm here bc I enjoy the freedom to own my own content and want to learn more about Bitcoin and permaculture and off grid living (and and and...). I actually enjoy reading all the protocol stuff that's over my head not bc it makes me feel stupid, but bc it's interesting and I get the bigger picture. I want to contribute to the community with my knowledge of herbs and health and healing and homeschooling and how to stay married for 30+ years. Lately, I've been working very hard to get my garden going between the seed starts and transplants and raised beds and mulching and physically emptying my truck bed of material. Today I took some of my kids out to support a friend's sandwich shop and then came home and planted eleven fodder trees. I just don't have time to emote about how someone is "making" me feel. For the record, I feel great and am happy to be here. If this doesn't feel like a good space to be in, try going outside and go grow something instead. Learn to mute bozos. Or just follow women you relate to and ignore the accounts that bug you. Or just delete your account and do something else. I for one am learning to avoid the "trending" topics 😂

I've been very focused and working hard. Three large (4x8) raised beds full so far, all from seeds I started in the dining room. Mostly hardy greens: a variety of salad greens, herbs, spinach, arugula, kale, chard, mustards, and sorrels. A fourth bed awaits my planting carrots, radishes and peas. I've got two 3x3 rounds to fill, one with strawberries and probably onions in the other. My hope is to get another 4 4x8 beds soon; I've got a lot of tomato starts and I also want green beans, squashes, and beets. In the ground: new raspberry and mulberry canes and I'm going to give goji a try though I don't know how well it will do here. I also got a nice mix of fodder trees that needs planting. If all goes well with my garden work this year, next year I can focus more on livestock and fencing.
Also. I stopped listening to the news in the morning while I'm getting ready for the day. Instead I am blasting music. Homeschoolers are actually better socialized bc they interact with people of all ages and in a variety of situations on a regular basis. With regards to sports, our family opted out due to the multiple practice days and weekend games that would take over everything else we as a family wanted to do. That being said, bc you pay taxes into the public school system, you *could* still play sports in that system even if you're schooling outside of it. Contact HSLDA or another legal homeschooling entity for the laws in your state, or dig around the homeschooling community in your area. My kids opted to play sports outside of the system, like frisbee, airsoft games, and volleyball.

Excellent series for homeschoolers! As a former teacher I agree 100% the problems of the school system. Things were already bad when I was teaching in the early 1990's and I've just seen it get worse over time. I started homeschooling once my babies showed up and have never regretted it. There was a ton of value in this episode; I'm going to use some of it for my graduating son this year ("show me you know xyz and I'll give you your diploma tomorrow"). Thanks @npub1587…kv0n

I got almost three beds filled in today with hardy green starts, but in between shoveling in and smoothing all of the compost, garden mix (two trips to get the truck bed filled), chips and other additions, I got to chat with the sherif who showed up.
Turns out my very old and well used van--which was at the repair shop--got stolen from there and turned up busted and abandoned when the driver got it stuck. If there's a plus side in any of this, maybe we'll be able to keep the very nice mountain bike the thief left in it.
In other news, we gratefully delivered packages of pork to the neighbors who helped us track down--or at least allowed us on their properties to look for--our wayward piggies last year.
It's a nice evening. The plum tree is in full bloom and smells amazing, and the robins are still chipping away as the frogs start up. I'm looking forward to a good night's sleep, but first tea.

@npub1vyr…fy55 reminded me of a roasted dandelion latte I made recently. It was delicious. I like combining it with a little chicory root and maca. When I want a dairy break, I use homemade almond milk (like here). Cardamom and honey sometimes, too. Yummy and so nourishing. This is still a thing here. Today. And no I'm not entering their shop. And no I can't just move. Instead I'm wearing my https://margaretannaalice.substack.com/p/mistakes-were-not-made-an-anthem tee shirt, taking myself out for a half day of respite (coffee and people watching with a book, body work, friends, and sunshine), and getting my raised beds filled later. Living my life. I can't fix the world, but maybe I can be different enough to put a pebble in someone else's shoe so they'll freely live theirs as well.

Interesting discussion! I have also yet to find anyone (at all) who takes Bitcoin. I generally ask farmers and small business owners like coffee shops. To be fair, I don't have any yet to spend (I'm trying) but I keep hoping to find people in my local community to connect and maybe trade with (if they'd even want to give up any of their Bitcoin, which I would understand not wanting to!). At the very least, I hope they see potential (and real) customers who want to move in that direction.
