I think @nprofile…mfuj probably exaggerated quite a bit by calling them "technofascist" but a ton of "FOSS" dev happens at RedHat these days, which is a subsidiary of IBM, who probably care about little more than profit and will gladly bend the knee to administrations like that of Trump.
There was also something about Nix/NixOS being involved with Palantir and Anduril or something. And that was shortly after they did a so-called "nazi purge" of their community, which meant banning lots of normal people. (I'd imagine there was probably not a single actual nazi.) But I haven't followed that drama very closely and don't know what the situation with Nix is now.

I've actually run into situations in the past where the Debian stable or Ubuntu LTS version I was using on a server didn't have a recent enough version of various software to support certain things. :blobcat-pensive2:
Not sure how likely it is to happen on desktop, but yea I like having easy access to the most up to date stuff.

Lunduke's interpretation that this may simply be Meta wanting to shift the responsibility to other companies makes sense. Unlike Apple and Google, Meta doesn't develop an OS, nor does it have an app store, so their lobbyists pushing for a law that's purely concerned with OS and app store stuff makes perfect sense for Meta: It ensures they have to do *nothing* in response to this law. That's basically the best case scenario for a company in terms of the result of their lobbying efforts. The new law makes literally no difference to them.
In the second half of the video, he points out that some larger tech industry coalitions, including Google, also started supporting such laws, but mainly through some organization about "social progress" and I see no plausible theory about there being anything nefarious behind this like wanting to be able to do more effective data harvesting.
One also has to ask why these companies would care at all if this is about some nefarious government plot to implement surveillance. I just don't see the panicked arguments in opposition to this law culminating into any kind of coherent theory about some nefarious intent on behalf of any party involved, government or corpo.
What I see happening is a bipartisan push for restricting children's access to various online content, because it's been running rampant for ages and more and more people are constantly talking about it (see also: social media bans for children) and so the companies are sending in their lobbyists to ensure that whatever laws get passed don't bother them too much.

What evidence is there that this law was pushed for by Meta? It seems more likely that lawmakers were going to decide on one or another law to this effect either way, because there was bipartisan support for this, and tech industry lobbyists got involved in the discussion because that's always how it goes in American politics. Their job is to ensure that new laws don't create too big of an issue for the corporations they work for.

So the "age verification" law that everyone is freaking out over just says an OS must offer an interface for specifying the age of a user? And offer a way for applications to check it?

No third party verification of any kind? What even is the problem? THIS IS GOOD.
This is almost exactly how I thought it should be:
1. Adult owner of computer specifies that user account "Timmy" is for a person born in 2016.
2. The OS offers applications a means of asking whether the current user is age X or older.
3. Websites meant for age X and over must send some signal to specify this, such as with an HTTP response header.
4. The web client application (e.g. Firefox) must react to this signal from websites and perform the age check using the OS mechanism mentioned in step 2.
When Timmy goes to adultsite.com, Firefox receives the header "User-Age-Check: 18" and asks the OS if Timmy is 18 or older. The OS says no, so Firefox stops loading the site and shows an error.
The law basically specifies points 1 and 2, just going into unnecessary detail about "age bracket" stuff. (Realistically, an OS would just offer a generic "age ≥ X" check so it can support any age brackets of any jurisdiction.)
This is a step in the right direction.

I was an enthusiastic contributor to multiple free software projects, like #guix, until all the #CoC crap and the culture associated with it made me begin to despise communities that previously felt like home. Because they began feeling toxic, oppressive, and exclusionary.
I've told you this multiple times, but every time I bring it up, you decide that it must have been my fault, and start to throw accusations at me.
Every time, I ask you for evidence of my wrongdoings that you accuse me of, pointing you at mailing list archives that you could cite for evidence if there were any, and every time you then just start trolling and hurling insults.
Because the accusations are either blatant misrepresentations that would be exposed if you cited the origin, or are made up entirely. (I'm not even sure you're aware of that. Maybe you just repeat hearsay without bothering to scrutinize it.)
I was even mildly supportive of CoCs until I've had these horrible experiences. The whole drama in guix for example was sparked by a suggestion I made to improve their CoC. Hilarious now that I think about it.
It's time to accept that CoCs are useless *at best* and that there's mounting evidence that they're actively harmful, due to an overall toxic culture they carry, and widespread public dislike of them.

Teacher ordered to pay 750K for "hate speech" that's basically just him expressing his opinions.
Someone on the pro trans side pointed to the first three screenshots here (from pages 28, 31, 63) as "evidence" that he deserves it, so I assume this is the worst of what he said.
The ruling also includes a passage that implies that saying you don't believe in gender identity is automatically illegal discrimination. See last screenshot from pages 18/19.

That's also why "woke right" is a valid description as well, that can be used for right-wing dogmatic identity politics like "white men are being oppressed by evil feminists/Jews/gays in power and are the source of all evil" which is just woke left turned upside down.

I've used #BlueSky for about a day or two more than a year ago, and defended feminist views / criticized people slandering JK Rowling. Today, got this email.
It can't be stressed enough just how much of a clown show the whole platform is. Apparently, they consider the expression of feminist opinions to be terrorism and criminal.
I think it's probably based on the fact that I said the nazis did not specifically persecute "trans people" in the way they persecuted gay people or Jews. According to trans activists, that's "Holocaust revisionism," which they excuse JK Rowling of. And from there, I'm guessing, they tell themselves that my posts could be considered to be disseminating content for neo-nazi groups, hence this moderation decision. It's mental gymnastics at Olympic level.
They are living in an alternate reality, and the reason they're perpetually mad is that actual reality won't bend to their will. It's sad.

BNF fucking sucks. PEG is so much better it's not even funny.
But the problem is, with BNF you can auto-generate random text to stress-test your parser. With PEG that's literally impossible.
So you write PEG to create a parser, and then try to write the equivalent BNF to stress-test it with random data...
Except in my case I wrote the parser by hand so what I actually need to do is send random data to both my hand-written parser and the PEG generated parser and somehow see if they behave the same...

Imagine a bunch of physicists, chemists, biologists etc. sat down together to create an alternate fantasy reality that's basically ours but with key modifications to the fundamental laws of nature (general relativity, standard model of particle physics) so that magical spells, fantasy species, spirits, the undead, etc. can exist and be explained "scientifically" in a coherent manner.
Could probably even include time travel. In fact, ubiquitous use of wormholes through spacetime could explain some of the common schools of magic, like summoning, and perhaps evocation, speaking in D&D terms.

I want to express SUPPORT for #Framework Computers @nprofile…vmar as someone who:
- Went deep into #feminism a number of years ago and was on the side of feminists during the whole GamerGate thing.
- Continues to support even *radical* feminist political analysis and perspectives within reason, as well as gay rights and what have you.
- Is otherwise a lefty liberal progressive pro-democracy guy opposed to *actual* right-wing extremists, while upholding freedom of speech.

I think I get what he's saying.
- You get your salary, paying income tax.
- You buy a product with it, paying sales tax.
- The company pays the profit as a salary to its employees, subject to income tax.
- They buy a product with it, paying sales tax.
- ... ad infinitum
Taxes are applied every time money changes hands. By that logic, inheritance can be taxed as well. It's like bonus salary, but from your relatives instead of an employer.
If inheritance tax prevents working classes from accumulating wealth, then I'd say the problem is the formula. It should be a progressive tax, remaining 0% until a certain floor is reached, just like income tax (in most places anyway, I think).
E.g. in Germany you pay zero income tax until your salary reaches, I don't know, let's say 500 bucks or whatever per month. Then for every buck on top of that you start paying increasingly large percentages as tax. There's also an upper limit on the percentage. Found a graphic. The solid line is the percentage applied to each additional Euro you make; the dotted line is what that ends up being as a percentage of your total salary.
You just tweak this to make things fairer for lower incomes. Same principle should be used for inheritance tax instead of abolishing it, if the current numbers prevent wealth accumulation for working people.

Yeah, you could say the title is "misleading" because the government officials weren't walking up to kids offering these books to them in person.

The labeling as "mostly false" is completely inaccurate. You could argue again that the title is "misleading" because the word "descriminalize" is easy to misunderstand. Possession of CSAM was apparently downgraded from a "crime" to a "misdemeanor." To quote the official announcement from the Bundestag:

In my experience, being age 31 now and having chronic mental issues:
- A good workout can sometimes provide a "high" but that's not something one should rely on / not what you should be training for.
- Starting at a certain age (~30) you need to learn to go at least a *bit* easy on yourself, because your body won't recover the same.
- If you're dealing with health issues (including mental ones!!!) the last point applies ten-fold, and you have to accept that some days you can only do 5 minutes of cycling and a few curls with half the weight you normally lift; this is usually still better than doing nothing and you should still feel good with yourself for having done it.
Still struggling to embrace these principles myself. I keep over-training and then going inactive again for a week because I can't recover.

Huh, just learned that the "per capita casualties" of October 7th were approximately 10x that of 9/11.
During 9/11, approximately 3K people died, at a US population size of around 300M. That's 1 for every 100K.

I wish more people seriously engaged with this issue and thought critically about it.
If you want absolutely ALL fictional graphical material to be legal, no matter how obscene, based on the logic of "it doesn't cause objective, physical harm to anyone," then by your own logic you must also ask for the legalization of recordings of violent and/or sexual crimes, including those involving children, because the availability of such recordings does not cause objective, physical harm to anyone.
Your first retort may be: "OK, but it causes re-traumatization to the victim, who did at some point suffer physically." (In other words, you concede that at least some forms of subjective, emotional harm are important too; not just objective, physical harm.)
And what if the victim is deceased? This means there exists no human who suffered physically who could be re-traumatized.
Of course, the family of the victim would still be extremely disturbed. So now we accept another type of subjective, emotional harm.
And what if the entire family is deceased? Would you then allow the dissemination of such a recording, that sick fucks get off to? Why not?
You must accept at some point that at least a few select forms of censorship of extremely obscene material are acceptable, if not in fact desirable, in a civil society that cares about public well-being.
Then why do you scoff at the concept of obscenity laws altogether? Do you really want to make certain forms of child porn legal as well? Don't contradict yourself.
By the way, another angle with which you can look at obscenity laws is that they aren't just about respecting the emotional well being of people, but also about censoring material that could be seen as encouraging certain crimes, such as for example by making a sexual crime appear "sexy" to the audience, or by making a violent crime appear fun to commit.
So it can be about preventing objective, physical harm after all. And also from this angle, it's not clear why a recording of a real crime and a digital rendering of a virtual crime are so different. Both could encourage the audience by making the crime appear attractive. From both angles, we reach the same conclusion.

This is just the typical slippery slope argument / false equivalence that's always used when it comes to censorship issues.
I agree that using payment blockages and other such things to silence political positions and genuine artistic expressions is horrible. But an incest rape game that only serves a pornographic purpose, rather than being a legitimate piece of artistic expression or social commentary, is different.
It's the same issue as freedom of speech vs. hate speech. I hold free speech highly and think social media platforms should never ban people for having political opinions that the host doesn't like. But being allowed to spam "I fucking hate nigger kike tranny faggots I hope they all die" on repeat into social media isn't really any kind of serious speech or legitimate artistic expression, so a user who does that could be reasonably banned to clean up the place and I couldn't possibly care about it.

We do as a society. I don't really see the point in these "proxy debates" over freedom of speech, or neutrality of payment processors, because in reality we all agree that *some* things can and should be censored, such as libel, or for example child abuse images.
Consider ages old abuse videos of a real child who is deceased, and who has no close relatives alive who could be psychologically tormented by the circulation of these videos. Why do we nevertheless make it illegal to spread such content? Because it deeply degrades our collective moral character as an entire society if we allow it.
I want the same treatment to be given to games or other media whose sole purpose is clearly to make hateful and abusive crimes, sexual or otherwise, appear exciting and titillating to the audience. Not a game like GTA 5, which contains a crapload of genuine artistic expression, social commentary, and so on; I'm rather talking about games like "Bitch Rape Simulator 3000" or "Nigger Lyncher: KKK Edition" (made up titles).
The current censorship as implemented by the credit card companies probably spreads too wide of a net and over-censors rather than under-censors. (I haven't looked closely.) It's a bit of a pendulum swing situation. I hope that eventually the pendulum will slow down in the middle, but I'm not going to lose my mind over the fact that it swung a bit too far in the opposite direction after decades of extremely degrading porn getting a free run. The porn industry, and degrading porn culture more generally, have way overstayed their welcome in modern western culture.

I tried to buy F&H a year or two ago and it was impossible to begin with due to Steam not offering it in Germany.
And IIRC the author didn't put it up for purchase on any other platform, which I'm afraid is his problem.
If I were an indie dev, I would let people pay me directly through a number of methods, and offer them a download link. (In addition to putting it up on Steam.)
I would put in a note saying that although I'm against DRM and I cannot prevent people from sharing the game with their friends, they should please consider trying to convince their friends into actually buying it if they truly enjoy it / should please consider buying it if they received a gratis copy and enjoy it.
(I'd also probably release the code under GPL and only make the artwork proprietary or something.)
