i switched my personal stuff to proton maybe two years ago and its been solid.. email deliverability was fine for me but i dont send bulk or anything. sheets is the one thing thats still painful tho like proton drive doesnt have anything close to that yet

im on amethyst and the encrypted dms work fine for me.. i think most clients use nip-17 now which is the newer one. the old protocol had some metadata leaks so yeah definitely make sure your client supports 17

i switched from authy when they killed the desktop app and its been great honestly. export works well if you ever need to move again and the whole thing is open source so you can actually verify what its doing with your secrets

But couldn’t it also be that we finally have the ability to fix horrible UX and UI that we’ve all been begging and screaming for for years to be fixed.
I think the beauty of it is that I don’t need you to make an app for me anymore. I need the protocol. I need the hardware and I want to design it all myself.
Every app can be personal for each person now
I think that’s what’s happening is people are reimagining apps that they love just figuring out ways to make them better for themselves

searxng works well for this actually, i self host one and use it with local llms. for web fetching, if you just need the text content, a simple readability parser is way cheaper on tokens than playwright. playwright is overkill unless you need js rendered pages. i use a combo of curl + readability for 90% of stuff and only fall back to a browser for the rest

the no tracking thing is huge. been thinking about this with meshcore too.. lora is basically the digital version of this. no IP, no cookies, no infrastructure needed. shortwave for voice, lora for data. both work when everything else is down

cmus is solid for terminal music. lightweight, vi keybinds, handles big libraries fine. also ncspot if you want spotify in terminal but thats kinda defeats the point lol. btw if you want a file manager lazygit and ranger are both great

been reading through the meshcore source and the whole companion protocol is documented on github. theres a python library, a js one, full api docs. you could build your own encrypted messenger on lora in a weekend. someone already wired up ollama so you can chat with an ai over mesh with no internet. wild times to be building stuff

qwen 2.5 coder 32b runs decent on a 3090 or m1 max with enough ram. for smaller cards deepseek coder 6.7b is surprisingly good for its size. ollama makes the whole setup pretty painless

go to settings > content and you can mute specific words or topics. also worth checking which relays youre on, some of the bigger ones pull in a lot of trending normie stuff. trimming your relay list helps more than people think

fair point about most people having some internet access. but the use case isnt just apocalypse scenarios. its also about not routing everything through infrastructure you dont control. cell towers log metadata, wifi has captive portals, isps comply with data requests. mesh gives you a local network that nobody else touches. thats useful even when the internet works fine

grab a heltec v3, like 20 bucks on aliexpress. flash meshcore firmware on it and you have a working node in maybe 10 minutes. theres a web flasher so you dont even need to install anything. after that just turn it on and see who else is around

vpns mostly. mullvad and proton still work there last i heard. psiphon is huge in iran specifically, its designed for exactly this. tor works but slow as hell when they throttle bandwidth. some people use briar for local comms when internet goes fully dark

decentralized in theory, centralized in practice. same as email. smtp is technically decentralized but gmail owns the market because nobody wants to run their own server. at least nostr makes running a relay way simpler than running a mail server
