Wife was telling me they had some layoffs at her company yesterday. They basically shut down an entire department. No two weeks notice; in some cases, HR cut off access to the people's accounts before they even told them. Just "leave now."

Huh. This is enlightening. I'm generally very aware of what's in the fridge & freezer, so when I get hungry, I mentally go through the contents to determine what to have. Opening the fridge is only necessary to retrieve the ingredients or meal. Same with grocery shopping or going to a restaurant; I generally know what they have & it's only a matter of picking it up.

Saw two reaction videos yesterday. A millennial watching the original "Bad News Bears" who was shocked at the coach giving the team beer for coming in second place. "He's giving beer to children?!" A Gen Zer seeing "Airplane!" for the first time kept repeating in disbelief after every death or sex joke, "I thought this was rated PG. This is not PG! What did PG mean back then?"

I watched "Max Headroom" when it was originally airing back in '87 and this brief exchange immediately stuck with me. And it's something that I've tried to keep top of mind every time I'm watching/reading/hearing the news. I suspect if more people understood this, it would go a LONG way towards increasing media literacy.

The reasons for the Soviet Union's collapse are irrelevant right now. My point is that when you suddenly throw a substantial portion of government employees to the unemployment lines and suddenly lose access to vital government services, people will die. Hundreds of thousands of people will die. Hundreds of thousands.

When the Soviet Union collapsed, that meant thousands of people were suddenly out of work. People who did important government jobs like maintaining infrastructure like heat and water, providing access to health care, etc. Not only could those newly unemployed not afford basic necessities, but whatever safety nets had been in place for anyone in similar situations vanished. Thousands upon thousands died as direct result of USSR's collapse.

The poverty rate continued to remain as high as 20% in 2004. In 2011, 53% could still only afford basic necessities (which technically isn't poverty, but not by much).

What happened is that the Soviet Union collapsed at the end of 1991. The poverty rate in the region skyrocketed from 1.5% in 1991 to 49% in 1993. Life expectancy dropped from 64 to 57. Alcohol-related deaths rose 60% and deaths from diseases went up 100%.

Here's a comparison of populations between the US and Soviet Union/Russia. Russia is consistently larger by ~20 million until the early 1990s, but starts dropping for about 15 years before starting to creep back upwards. Why do you suppose that is?

This strikes me as WHY so many people have problems understanding this. They're still operating under a social contract leftover from days gone by and don't realize businesses have absolutely burnt that contract to ashes. People are working under the belief that there is a fair system in place and it should benefit everyone equally; they don't recognize it's DESIGNED to massively advantage large corporations at their expense.

Placed an action figure pre-order on Apr 4 for figures that were due to be released during "Q2." Sometime in June, Q2 became Q3. October -- and Q4 -- begins on Tuesday, and I haven't seen any formal news (or even social media posts) from the company since July. The only reason I know they haven't gone under entirely is they started revamping their website last week. Not super confident right now, though.

MO Police Lt. Daniel Zeigler has been "charged in the death of a K-9 officer earlier this year after being left in a hot car overnight… the AceK9 system inside the police vehicle was in working order & would have had to been manually turned off/deactivated on June 20, contributing to the death of Horus by removing a safeguard to prevent such an incident."
Zeigler's already faced more consequences for this than if he'd deliberately murdered a POC.

I was driving through our town Thursday and the stop lights at the main intersection were out. When I checked my email later at home, I saw there was one from the city saying a traffic accident had occurred that afternoon and the expected repairs would last well past rush hour. This morning, I saw another email saying it wouldn't be repaired until tomorrow at the earliest.
