how many people on here regularly use vim, and actually use its commands?
Examples:
- ":r !date" or ":r !echo hi" to insert a date (or other command) into the open file at the cursor
- ":w !python" or ":w !bash" to run the current buffer through python/bash (or any other command)
- ":%!jq" or ":%!sort" to take the entire file's contents and pipe it into an external command like jq or sort
etc. I find it really useful at times but it seems like few people use it, let alone the commands!

(I know this requires some way to run the POC as normal user, and that not every kernel build and device has the necessary exploitable bits, but it will still be an available way that you can try; I do suggest trying it simply to see if it works, wouldn't be the first time an (embedded or otherwise) device has weird libraries, oversized kernel builds, and bad protection past the frontend)

I see slightly more in Firefox, the top banner bit (I saw that in LibreWolf too earlier but it stopped working after a few refreshes). still no video though.
worth checking if it works for you in a private tab, I saw the livestream video is marked as private, it could be that because you're logged in to youtube you're not seeing the issue

DRAM consumption is definitely up! but the reason the PRICES are up is because they purposely let the prices escalate. They do this every decade or so, which is why I think the article is relevant, as much as that I also acknowledge hardware consumption is up, and also acknowledge that Sam Altman did a really dirty thing by buying up the wafer supply (and IMHO should be sued for it, this shit needs to be banned), but that's again not 'AI' but bad actors.

the training data thing is actually interesting because, from what I've seen, even those big tech companies have set up their AI so they can pull out the layers trained on 'stolen data' at any time. but they don't because then they'd be 'left behind' and 'can't compete'. Lawmakers need to be clear and actually ban it, I feel like they could fix the whole problem overnight if they did that and I'm not even joking.

People talk about AI like it's an entity, people don't say "this specific datacenter is in a bad place" or "this person has done something bad using AI", no, people say "AI did this", which is personification of the thing they were also explicitly claiming not to be a person, which makes it hard to argue with in good faith because it has an inherent dissonance that is hard to breach without being grouped with big techbros. We need to hold people accountable.

I don't think "most" datacenters are in bad places. It does happen sometimes and I wish they didn't, and I wish there was more attention for that, because it's unnecessary; the DC I work at LOWERED the local water usage and is in an ideal grid location, usually they explicitly plan for that, they don't hate people.

doing a bit of gardening today, with the help of my mom who has lots of experience with it :blobfoxuwu: :wvrnTilt:
mowed and turned over some parts of the grass and put in some bigger plants and flower seed, the perennial plants and trees are full of flower buds and fresh growth already, it's a good moment to prepare your garden for the summer if you have one!
instead of one of those battery trimmers I got my old one hooked up to a portable battery, much more powerful

I still can't even that my now nearly 80 year old mom has been on Fedora on a thinkpad e520 (2011) for a decade and it all just works.
I checked her laptop just now and it's fully up to date on fedora 43, so she's done like 20 version upgrades autonomously too. The battery has degraded a little but the whole thing still works fine and she's very happy with it.
This is how things should be, this is peak computing tbh.

my brief nuanced take on Matrix:
Bad:
- Security-wise they should stop ignoring issues
- Onboarding is a mess.
- "deprecated" is a poor excuse
- even Element deserves more love and fixes and is totally salvageable
Good:
- It's the ONLY platform with all the important parts in its core spec (E2EE, Federation, History, fedi voice/video calls, etc)
- It's the ONLY platform that actually handles giant end to end encrypted rooms, larger than even Signal's.
We can make it work if we believe in it.

I do think that most (public) group chats should just be left decrypted though. I feel like that would solve a lot of the key federation issues, and there's no real reason to have these encrypted as they're essentially public anyway.

I've used Matrix for years and the only times I've seen it is:
1) when logging in without entering the end to end encryption password or alternatively approving the login from another device
2) using a wonky client that doesn't support E2EE in an encrypted groupchat (and arguably there's no reason to encrypt groupchats to begin with)

I came across an article that more or less said 'get higher Cat ethernet cables for more speed!'
But the reality is more nuanced.
1) Cat is just a rating for 'capable of xxx mhz'. It doesn't say anything about the material. Copper > CCA.
2) Many 'Gamer Cat7+' cables are not certified; essentially fake.
3) A *good* Cat5e cable is capable of 1gbit at 100(!) meters and maybe 10gbit often up to 30-40 meters.
4) Consider EMI; Don't ziptie your Ethernet to your Power cabling, that'll always suck.

it seems the aurora has subsided already, I haven't seen much of it in the last hour, I do still see a faint shimmer on the horizon but nothing like the clear moving sheen across the sky that I could readily see with my unadjusted eyes and capture with simple photos
It's interesting to see, that must've been really fast moving particles from the solar storm, usually it takes longer for these to arrive, I'm guessing we'll see more intense auroras in the next few hours/days, keep an eye out!

TIL: In Deep Rock Galactic, if you use the zipline trick to get EVERYONE out of the extraction droppod after it starts leaving, the mission actually half-fails, with everyone striking victory poses in the end screen, while the lights are red (indicating failure), getting a bunch of the loot and XP, but not all of the gold, and the actual mission counting as failed so you'd have to redo it if it's part of some assignment

I really appreciate how well KDE Plasma does as tiling window manager when you get the hang of how it does it.
I feel like almost nobody knows this is even an option, so:
- press SUPER (win key) + T
- you'll see the panes that you can divvy your screen up into. make panels as you please.
- grab a window by pressing super + mouse key (you can press anywhere on the window for this, not just the titlebar)
- hold SHIFT to see the panels you defined before (with super+T)

I had an amaryllis sitting in a bag unused because I wanted to plant it and didn't get to it because of being sick, but that didn't deter the plant from deciding to grow on its side in the hallway, so I put it with its bag on top of a pot in the window sill to let it grow, and it seems to be doing well so far!
outside I noticed one of my pots didn't survive the recent streak of icy weather, guess I'll have to find a new one for the inhabitants somewhere this summer

I would echo this sentiment, for most things it is objectively better than Windows these days.
but as much as I hate to admit it, having e.g the right creative tools available is important too, and if you want truly everyone to switch, it does mean that some people have to sacrifice some comfort, tools, and even hardware
That said, I definitely think it's worth it to still do it, because in the end, if everyone switches we'll get an open ecosystem that'll bring that all back and more

pro tip: a Homelab and Selfhosted infra are two different things.
If you use your #homelab for #selfhosting your personal stuff, one of two things happens:
- you can no longer use your homelab as homelab and for experimentation
- your selfhosted infra is constantly offfline
Selfhosted infra should be seen as a PRODUCTION environment, which homelabs are not.
It should have automated backups, and ideally receive automated updates for security; you should avoid touching it as much as possible.

So if you’re wired for Impact, you have to hack the system.
Personally I've found two things work for me:
- Daily "Clear the Runway"; Do minimum viable work just to remove friction (no dishes = can't cook). Lean into small wins (dishwasher LITERALLY takes 1 min). The goal isn't joy, but freedom for your future self.
- Periodic "Quests"; Save your energy for the big deep-clean resets. That’s where the visible 'Before & After' contrast exists, and you can finally get a real dopamine payout.

I’ve been thinking some more about this all to try and find a possible solution.
Then I realized some people actually DO get dopamine from maintenance. They find peace in "order". For them, the act of keeping things tidy is its own reward.
But for many people (ADHD perhaps?) We run on "Impact." We need a visible delta, a clear Before and After. Maintenance feels like a void because even if you do it perfectly, the result is just... neutral. We are wired for the adventure, not the status quo.

I also want to address the Renewables elephant
I’m a huge believer in solar/wind. It’s exciting how fast they’re growing. My home batteries + panels almost get me off-grid... in the summer. But not winter.
This is where Nuclear makes sense.
While solar suits homes, heavy industry less so, and e.g steel/cement needs massive constant power AND high heat.
Nuclear generates that heat directly, cleanly bridging the gap and handling the heavy lifting so renewables can handle the rest

Some nuance to add:
- Gen 4 reactors massively reduce old nuclear waste volume & life; By recycling spent fuel, we can extract the remaining energy and 'burn' the long-lived elements. This shrinks the waste pile and drops storage time from 100,000 years to ~300
- That said, reprocessing is complex/costly, but it unlocks massive energy reserves we've already mined, reducing the need for new mining
- Unregulated coal ash actually releases radioactive material which nuclear plants do not.

Dear #Linux power users:
I know it feels weird, but I do recommend using desktop apps like Discover to update your desktop system rather than running apt/dnf/etc manually
Why?
- Discover etc actually update your Flatpaks and Snaps too, apt/dnf/etc don't do this, and this actually seems like a widespread issue somehow
- using apt/dnf/etc directly (usually) directly overwrites system files, which can cause e.g KDE and other C++ applications to become unstable. Only do this right before a reboot

but that all said; I understand people have preferences, and if their preferences is less bells and whistles, so be it, that's a valid choice.
I just wish Gnome would 1) not be used as default in many distros and workplaces that implement it (gLinux at Google is a pain in the ass sometimes), and 2) would literally allow for any configuration at all without having to install a billion plugins that then break stuff and they then snobbishly suggest you to just turn off the plugins.

there's actually no menu bar in KDE. There's just panels and widgets. You can make it the way you want
And that's kind of one big reason why I personally like KDE; sure it has bells and whistles, but you can literally turn it into Gnome if you prefer, hell you can even turn it into a smartphone-centered touch DE.
I dislike Gnome because they purposely REMOVE options for no other reason than being opinionated. It would not hurt their goals any tiny bit if they just allowed more toggles 🤷

my problem with gnome is that they have about as much choice as apple when it comes to anything, it sometimes feels like they aspire to be ios or whatever, they even removed desktop icons and refuse to have a toggle for it, you have to install a plugin.
which some people may like, and some people will not. If they allowed people to choose, I'm sure there would be less salty responses, but alas, they like salt it seems.

I really appreciate how repairable the 90s miele 'novo stellae' washing machine I have, the frontside is LITERALLY a door, with hinges and all, you just remove 6 screws and it kinda click/slides open (does need some force)
now to replace the shocks, which are so worn they're not giving any resistance. they're probably still the 30 year old original ones from the 90s

the best thing about hosting your own server, is watching other social media platforms (and also fedi servers) catch on fire and explode over silly avoidable drama, while you don't even have to try to keep whatever you don't like out of your domain.
#Selfhosting is super easy. In fact I'd say the hardest part is to *not* touch it. You should put it somewhere on some device you can also avoid touching. Only do updates (and preferably automate those), then your server is basically indestructible.
