Volvo (and Polestar) are in crisis mode as their flagship cars are plagued by software problems.
It’s said that car companies don’t “understand” software, but the larger issue is that they don’t *appreciate* software.
I mean, they don’t understand leather tanning or high-end speaker design either, but that doesn’t stop them from sourcing premium materials and great sound systems. But software is always bought from the lowest bidder (Infosys in the Volvo/Polestar case)

A fun bug in the latest software update for my Polestar 2:
If you coast downhill in one pedal drive for more than 1 minute and 30 seconds without touching the brakes, you lose the brakes. A real use it or lose it situation!
(Not a huge deal here in Finland since the grade must be pretty steep for the car to not stop with one pedal drive. Also affects Volvos apparently)

no joo, en vaan nää kamalasti muita vaihtoehtoja kuin että 1) bonarit on niin pieniä suhteessa perusliksaan että ne on merkityksettömiä tai 2) bonarit on niin isoja että jengi on kusessa kun ne jää tulematta.
Ehkä olen erityisen penseä tähän siksi että en myöskään usko kannustinvaikutuksiin ainakaan tällaisessa softakehitysorganisaatiossa ~yhtään.

yrittäjänä ja työnantajana nyt jonkun verran tullut mietittyä näitä. Tällainenhan olis kiva työntekijälle, jos se oikeasti johtaisi pitkällä aikavälillä suurempaan tulotasoon. Mutta tuskinpa näin käy. Ja jos ei käy, niin sehän on sitten vaan epävarmaa tuloa. Aika harvalla talous on niin hyvällä mallilla että on ihan ok, kun jonain vuonna jää 30% liksasta saamatta.

en ihan purematta niele noita statseja, cloudflare tietysti tässä kaupittelee boteilta suojautumista. Oman kokemukseni mukaan esim. mobiilisovelluksilta voi tulla requesteja joita cloudflare ei koe ihmisten tekemiksi.

My suggestion for a concrete action item is to outlaw egress fees in public clouds. Sure, it’s “unfair” in the sense that bandwidth costs (a little) money, but I think it’s fine to make the hyperscalers come up with other pricing dimensions.
Note that this has already been mandated in a limited way to facilitate migrating from one cloud to another on a one-time basis. My idea is to go further, to enable companies to repatriate partial workloads while keeping others in the cloud.

Ceph: do you have a Ph.D. In Ceph? If yes, it’s great
Minio: bad performance (each object is a minimum of two files on disk but typically more like 16) combined with weird requirements like a minimum of four servers that have an identical set of disks. Replication between clusters is best effort only
SeaweedFS: great in theory, not trustworthy in practice (especially on the filer layer)
Deuxfleurs Garage: “you should make periodic snapshots of the metadata database to survive crashes”

The only fiber cable between Finland and Germany has suffered a cut last night. The cable mostly follows the Nord Stream routing in the bottom of the baltic sea.
The remaining links are mostly via Sweden.
I would expect this to hurt Hetzner the worst, since a lot of the workloads they host in Finland are here just for the cheap electricity but are actually connecting with clients elsewhere.
