I admire IT people 20 years in who still run home labs. It's like coming home from the egg salad sandwich factory, hearing, "what do you want for dinner, honey?" And saying, "same thing we have every night: egg salad sandwiches."

The full story of sysmon-config, the first (to my awareness) open source HIDS monitoring solution I've neglected but others have picked up the mantle, is sonething I would like to tell.
It was in fact not generated for a security job, strictly. I needed to understand the sensitive modifications being made to our Windows systems as Helpdesk. And I did not want to filter Procmon again.
It turns out the sensitive modifications that screw things up kind of include the malware. ones.

2026-03-27 21:17:03 UTC

Fun fact I made a typo in sysmon-config many years ago, when I was working in Helpdesk.
I got my shot and was hired to the big firm with the big fancy expensive tools I would've never dreamed of.
Do you know what I find in that tool, auditing it?
My typo. They pasted it in. They just... copied the whole thing.
I sit at my desk. And I realize I was always enough.

One of best aspects of my firm is a Teams chat run by our incident management department, with about 700 key techs across enterprise receive updates on problems and issues trending that way. Anyone can raise flag about something weird, if confirmed gets split out. Just discretion. Not intended for management consumption, that's handled by incident department.

I pick movies largely based on what's starting when I decide to be there. Ended up being "How To Make A Killing."
DELICIOUS. No idea it was an A24. I didn't think it would pull through for a bit but dang it delivers. Not what I thought from the ads some humor but DARK. Recommended. A real treat from a writer-director and you can absolutely tell.
