Thanks! My mom used Kolbe Academy for the curriculum, and I'm sure there's plenty on that list that I've forgotten about. Some that were influential for me were The Histories by Heroditus, History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucidedies, The Oresteia trilogy, The Republic by Plato, The Nicomachean Ethics by Aristotle, Confessions and City of God by Augustine, Beowulf, The Divine Comedy by Dante, The Song of Roland, The Canterbury Tales, a whole bunch of the Summa Theologiae by Aquinas, a whole bunch of Shakespeare, The Federalist Papers, and The Communist Manifesto by Marx.
Very much a Catholic list of literature, and weighted towards Western stuff, but outside of the curriculum I picked up the Analects of Confuscius, The Quran, The Art of War by Sun Tzu, and The Book of Five RIngs by Musashi to read in my free time, so the stuff I read for class was very much giving me the intellectual tools to comprehend other things. There was also a bunch more stuff for the modern and contemporary eras, but I had senioritis by then so I can't recall much from those texts.

I was homeschooled through high school, and the thing that helped me most was how many primary sources we read. I got to college and I had pretty much already read everything that was assigned, even in grad school I was getting assigned stuff I had already read in high school. It wasn't easy at the time, but reading Plato and Aristotle when I was 13 (for example), just sets the stage for being able to read anything.

Essentially like a node in the network. I'm kinda thinking this is where co-op structures would make sense: a group of people who like the same kind of videos, which can then allow video makers they like to use that instance to publish. The cost is spread out, though there would need to be someone with the know-how to run it. Video makers have gotten used to the hosting of their videos being paid for in data on Youtube and TikTok and such, so it's going to be a shock for them to see the actual cost, and that's where a community is necessary to spread that cost around.

In my smolweb explorations, found that all browsers I tested will render a txt file. This is interesting to me for many reasons, but the main one is it makes it easy to run a handwritten website where regularly changing stuff is just txt files linked by the homepage.
So far, I've updated the Homilies section of my website (davidbaunach.com), all my homilies in one txt file, new ones added to the top (whenever I remember). But it's just text, even with ten years of homilies, the file would remain small.

Been working on making my own clothes for over a year (a more general post on that here: https://techpriesthub.xyz/saintmakerforum/d/40-adventures-in-clothes-making-finished).
A related part of that quest, has been coming up with an alternative to the clerical suit I used to wear. And I think I've done it!
Here's a not great picture of what I've come up with:

The base layer is a Greek style square tunic, and the second layer is a medieval style apron, with a square of white fabric at the neck to mimic a roman collar.
The tunic itself is incredibly comfortable, and the apron seems to give it more of a defined shape. The whole getup is lightweight, which is good in the hot and humid southern part of Missouri where I reside.

Been working on and off on this the past few weeks, think it's polished enough to share at this point. It was published first on my wiki, link to that at the bottom of the post:
# Initial Findings in my Studies of Anarchism-The Human Mycelial Network
I'm not going to be citing sources for everything here, this is just where I'm at in my thinking as I continue on this now year-long quest into studying Anarchism.
However, I will say that the main influences for my overarching comprehension, rely on the writings of Teilhard de Chardin, as well as the book I'm currently working through, 'The Art of Not Being Governed: An Anarchist History of Upland Southeast Asia' by James C. Scott. In the background are the various other authors I've read in the past year, including Dorothy Day, Peter Maurin, Bakunin, Kropotkin, Proudhon, and then stuff I've read further back that I'm now seeing in a new light by Belloc, Chesterton, Tolkien, and my all time favorite, Illich.
And I suppose that I needed to fit these new ideas into some framework I already had, and that ended up being the Omega Point.
That there is a procession happening over the course of history, a progression towards an inevitable perfection.
This allows anarchism to fall into a necessary place within the organism of humanity.
Anarchism (and thus the voluntarism, mutualism, conviviality, and personalism contained therein) precedes the development of the state, and it continues to this day, growing like the weed that pokes through the concrete and grows in the paved wasteland.
It cannot only be found on the edges and peripheries of state oppression, but right under it's very nose.
Whenever two people voluntarily decide to help each other, anarchism exists.
And thus it makes sense that it is only so recently in our history as a species, that we've begun to explore this phenomenon.
Only the ever-growing reach of states into the lower levels of the human network, made the study of this thing necessary.
We needed to describe the thing that we knew should be there, but was being diminished.
And the closest analogy I can use to describe it, is a mycelial network. Anarchism is the human network, moving nutrience and information around, because that's what human beings do. Not through greed or duty or coercion, but just through the fact that we're human.
This also makes it obvious that the state has some role to play. Like a tree benefiting from the mycelial network, and also benefiting it, especially when it dies; a state can only exist because of the underlying anarchic network, and when it dies, it gets incorporated back into the network.
This fits into the framework of the Omega Point, because an evolutionary growth that has been around long enough, even with it's many integral evils, must be playing some part in the overall development of humanity, even if that part is only allowed to remain in order to purify the whole.
So while the state may eventually become vestigial, at least right now, it is doing something for us.
Even if all that is, is teaching us the importance of anarchism.

Been testing out Garnet for roughly the last week, and oh boy, XMR tipping is such a good feeling! Even though I've got my lightning wallet hooked up as well, I've just completely stopped using it. Why give BTC, when you can give XMR?
Now obviously using a mainchain comes with some tradeoffs, but those essentially got fixed in the last update of Garnet, since you can now use external wallets for tipping. On the Monero chain it takes roughly 20 minutes for a transaction to be fully confirmed and thus you can't send another transaction for those 20 minutes. So with the one built-in wallet for Garnet, that was one tip per 20 minutes. But now that I can use my external wallet, where I have a bunch of sub addresses, I can pretty much tip non-stop.
For those waiting before trying something so new, I can report that I've had a bug-free experience thus far (I'm sure now that I've said that something will happen!), it just works like Amethyst.
And also I haven't really seen this discussed, but my tipical Monero tip has been 0.001, which is about $0.16, which seems enough for a micro transaction.

# SSB: King of the Mountain
This began as an appreciation, and I wanted to just focus on the positives of SSB, but it is difficult to express those without expressing the negatives that throw those positives into sharp relief.
So to begin, the main problem: being online and server first.
I'm going to talk about Nostr and the Fediverse together, since the former is an improvement of the latter.
They both suffer from the same critical problem, data is stored in a central location. For Nostr: the relay, Fediverse: the instance. It's someone else's computer. And when that computer goes offline, it breaks the network. A central point of failure.
Now here's where Nostr pulls away a bit, I've seen plenty of projects aimed at providing a local relay to serve as a backup, which is cool.
But the fundamental problem, is that the structure is thus that a central server is where the data lives, and the intermingling of accounts happen.
This server is going to get fat, it's admin will have to consider legal issues, and due to it's necessity for the network to function, must minimize downtime.
SSB had the same problem at first: pub servers. Essentially an SSB account, that followed other accounts, thus keeping a complete copy of their posting history on the server. New accounts could connect to this pub and easily get integrated into the network, updates were quickly propagated, but again, everything was in one place.
Now, that wasn't as much of a problem for SSB. Accounts can sync over a local network, so even if a pub server went down, the network could still function, it would just be slow, and literally peer to peer.
This was solved with room servers. They don't store any data, just facilitate the handshake between peers so they can sync directly with each other. The legal problem was taken care of for room runners, the necessity of being constantly up was already lessened, but now that it was cheaper and easier to run a room server, there could potentially be more rooms than there ever were pubs, thus granting a redundancy not previously possible.
But technical capability and resilience cannot overcome burnout. There's a handful of SSB passion projects still in development, but all the big ones have died out, for various reasons.
The major reason is you can't make a living doing good stuff for humanity. It's tough getting funding for something that will make people less reliant on corporations and governments. Crowdfunding can only get you so far.
And yet, SSB still wins. Despite how difficult it is to work with, being offline and local first is going to win every time.
There are other reasons as well, one of my favorites, is community moderation. I'll see a flurry of block events from people I follow, and go to check out the offending account to see if I should block it as well, and there's already nothing there: it was blocked out of replication range.
This leads to small, (sometimes) interconnected, communities. There are pockets of the network I will never see, and those far outside the norms of my community, who will never see mine.
It brings the noise to signal ratio down to manageable levels, spam gets swatted fast, trolls get blocked so they can be in their own community of one.
True freedom of speech, in that you will suffer the consequences of your words.

Finished another hand sewing project, used an old bathrobe for a pattern, though I added buttons and changed how it closed in the front. Wanting to do some cool sort of wide belt to finish it off, but will need to explore fabric options for that first.
On this project I also did 99% of it without a table, seated and sewing on the floor. I can't figure out how to lay the fabric out and cutout the pattern pieces without a table, though I guess the answer there is the floor as well. I have a feeling the cats will make that a nightmare.

I know Amethyst has the thing were if a certain number of accounts you follow block an account the account is hidden for you. The thing I'm talking about is if I block someone, it gets posted to my timeline that I blocked x. Does Amethyst do that as well? Don't think I've ever seen a post like that.

One of the thing I really appreciate about SSB is that block events are publicaly posted by all clients (at least all the ones I've tested). It makes blocking a communal act: see someone you trust block an account, give the account a look, and perhaps block it as well.
More important to block there since each account takes up storage on your device, but would be nice if clients did that here for blocks and mutes. The trolls can go play with the people that can stand them, and micro communities can form free from trolls and spammers.

Some new ground for me in my mending attempts. Up to now it's all been woven material, but this pair of athletic shorts had a seam come undone, and figured no better time than now for trying out the herringbone stitch (the one you're supposed to use for knits and stretchy material).
Stitches are not even, but seem like they will hold, and they stretch beautifully. I also love the contrast between unbleached linen thread and synthetic material.

Been using it for the last six months, incredibly good compared to other search engines. Also a huge fan of Teclis, which seems to be the hobby project of the founder of Kagi. If a website gets more than 5 blocked request by uBlock, it's not included in the index, so it's a nice way to search for sites made by hobbyists.

In my overall move towards treating my phone as a redundancy, I started carrying around my Sony a6400 for taking pictures. But it's so precise and expensive, and a little too large, so I didn't use it often.
Found this used G10 for cheap, much lighter, smaller, and I don't care if it gets lost or broken.
Still need to figure out all the options and everything. The top picture was one of my tests, while I like how the colors came out, sharpness is lacking. Will need to play around with it some more.

# Continued Adventures in Archiving

After trying out a huge number of archiving tools for webpages, have finally landed on one I like. SingleFile is a browser extension, it archives the webpage exactly as you see it, and generates a single html file. The file is a little bloated compared to what other tools will generate, but it will look exactly like what you originally viewed, and it is responsive to different screen sizes (at least that's what I've found in my tests).

# LogGit
## Using Git to distribute digital media.
Right off the bat I want to set expectations: I know almost nothing about programming or dev work, all I can really do is html, and if I want to make myself hate the world, I can do some css. So essentially I format documents. That said, I love offline-first, p2p, smallnet, and all that good stuff.
So when I saw Solderpunk's article on using Git for p2p distribution (https://portal.mozz.us/gemini/zaibatsu.circumlunar.space/~solderpunk/gemlog/low-budget-p2p-content-distribution-with-git.gmi) and then saw Degauss's project gwit (https://sr.ht/~ivilata/gwit/) that was inspired by it, I wanted to help. But I quickly realized there wasn't much I could do to help build out gwit, quick look at what Degauss was doing, and realized it was above my head.
Decided to go in a different direction, lean on my strengths as an artist, and just give the idea (of using Git to publish stuff) a name and an image.
Started with the name, after a few different iterations, settled on LogGit. Wanted the name to express the intention of using 'Git' as a 'log' to track changes to files over time, thus allowing for changeable content.
Then the image, drew inspiration from the Git logo, but kept it simple and small (32x32 pixels):
And then the idea: use Git to distribute stuff.
For anyone who is comfortable with computers and has some basic understanding of Git, we can start doing this now.
I'm testing out the idea in my free time, using a Git gui on my computer, and cloning static sites whose author's have made their Git repo public (many thanks to 100r.com and j3s.sh to making their repos easy to find). I also added the LogGit image and the link to clone from the public repo for my personal site and a few other projects I work on.
Cool thing I've found already, is that rss is no longer needed, whenever a change gets made to a site, I can pull the changes, look in the Git history, and see what was added or deleted.
What I like about this, is that nothing needs to be built, nothing major needs to change, just need to publish a link to clone the repo.
I also like that you can use the infrastructure of the enemy to publish.
Go ahead and host the repo on Github or any other major git forge, can typically do it for free, but the original always remains on your device, and you can move it elsewhere whenever you want, and leave your new location as your last commit. Next level would be to self-host it on a Forgejo/Gitea/whatever instance, or what I haven't tried out yet (but plan to soon) is host it yourself on Tor and keep things really sneaky.

I could see Nostr being useful for personal public wikis. Not a huge audience for it, but I've tried a few of the options out there and none were that great. Nostr could also allow for collaboration for wiki editing, which would be sweet.

Had a fun idea the other day, of a cathedral built on the back of a Strandbeest. Tossed it in an ai as a prompt to get some starting points for a sketch, and low and behold, there must not have been enough Strandbeest images for training, the images were useless.
Which was a blessing in disguise. Having to do some research, merge together some stuff in Gimp, and start some of my own rough sketches in order to brainstorm has been a fun process.
Below is my furthest along wip:
I'm going to finish this sketch, but I already have a ton of ideas for the next one.
And my end goal is a thought me and my brother came up with while discussing it: a nomadic group of shepherds, living in yurts built on the backs of smaller strandbeests, following their chapel wherever the winds blow over the great plains. When storms come, they lower the sails and stretch them over the legs of the strandbeests as shelter for their sheep. And of course they will have anchors to keep their beests steady in the storm.
I can picture it in my head, will be a sweeping scene. Hope I can do it justice.

I wanted to break my reply into a top level post, since it would be kind of long for a comment.
To clearly state my point, it is not impossible to prompt some sort of change to happen collectively, but at a grassroots level, the price of social change is too high for most individuals to consider paying it.
The Texas Secession Movements are a perfect example. These movements have happened in Texas since they joined the union, and have gotten nowhere. They grow to the level of collectivity pretty quickly, the desire is there, they can raise funds, they can convince politicians, they can sway public opinion. But the way the cards are stacked against any sort of change, they need a lot more money, in order to run a sustained campaign, as well as the necessary lawsuits, over a long period of time, even to win some small victories.
Working class people cannot raise these funds, or sustain this amount of spending, over the length of time that is necessary. And so these movements will only succeed if they can get corporate and/or government backing, which is not easy when you want to make life more difficult for government and corporations.
I referenced the Whiskey Rebellion because it highlighted this fact early on in US history. The people that rose up where small farmers on the frontier who were being unjustly taxed to the same extent as large manufacturers. Their grievances were dismissed and ignored, and when they finally fell back to violent means of protest, the federal government responded with overwhelming force.
The tragedy of the US is that though it was formed through violent protest and revolution, since that time when any group tries to do something similar, they are silenced.
And the repercussions are often not terribly visible to those outside the local community. Try to fight city hall, and all the sudden you start getting pulled over all the time whenever you drive somewhere. Your property gets reassessed at a higher value and your taxes go up. Your utilities become unreliable. Emergency services don't respond to your calls.
I said disappear, but I didn't mean killed. That does happen, but most of the time it's easier to shut people up by making their life hell. They disappear because they learned it's better to shut up.
Marvin Heemeyer and his killdozer are another good example. The frustration of trying to work with government bureaucracy makes most people just quite trying. In Marvin's case he decided to go out with a bang, but for the vast majority, they don't have enough capital and determination to keep fighting in the face of constant setback and frustration. And who can blame them.
I've stuck with mostly well-known cases for example, but I know about so many from the local communities I've lived in that are not recorded anywhere. The crushing weight of inability to do anything meaningful to even change something on a local level is insidious and it breaks your soul. The wide-spread drug use in this country makes complete sense. The only thing left is getting high and forgetting about this hell for a while.
While I understand the drug use, it's not for me. Subversion is the only realm of protest that makes sense to me. Build small things locally that make government redundant, with the understanding that if it becomes too well-known you will get punished. As long as you're willing to play dumb and pay the fine, you might make it out with just that. Worst case is jail, but that can be a method of protest. Live on the state's dime, and realize you're just living in a slightly smaller prison than you inhabited previously.

Are you stating that number of citizens = capability to control your government.
If so, that's an argument I haven't heard before, care to say more?
The lynchpin to understanding the servility of US citizens is the Whiskey Rebellion of 1791-1794, when the Federal army of 13,000 marched against 600 tax protestors. It was at that point (only a few years after the end of the revolution) we realized we had traded one king George for another. The only ones who speak out are the ones willing to be martyrs, and US soil is drenched with their blood.

# Collapse of Governments
When the rightful King ascended to the eternal throne, the scandal that is "government" was forced into the light of day.
We could no longer have a king, if Christ is King. We could no longer have a president, when Christ the High Priest presides over the eternal liturgy.
It is a reversal of the sin that happened when the people of Israel, in their desire to be like other nations, demanded a king.

"Suffer both to grow until the harvest, and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers: Gather up first the cockle, and bind it into bundles to burn, but the wheat gather ye into my barn."
And there are many other places where Our King says that we need not be concerned by these pretenders and usurpers, the day of judgment will come for them just as it will come for you and me.
Suffer government as one of the many injustices of this world, but do not let it steal the peace God gives you.
Many in the Church have furthered this teaching throughout the ages, showing that even those who find themselves within the machinations of a governing structure can at least steer it in a better direction, by aligning themselves closely with Christ, and following His direction, so as to allow Him to govern through them.
But even better, do not ever begin a government, or help to further one.
Instead, do as Our King teaches: give food to the hungry, drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, care for the sick, and visit the imprisoned.

Man, Diaspora was my first foray into more decentralized social networking, and it was pretty darn cool! Think the main problem is what is always the sticking point: for the network to be healthy, a bunch of people have to run servers, and the people who actually can and want to do that are far between. Add to that the legal burden of running a server, and the writing is on the wall.

Gemini Protocol: the best social network
I chase the magic, and every once in a while, it's within my grasp.
Heard about Gemini roughly a year ago, but took a few months for me to research and download a browser to actually try it out (oh, if only I knew about the various https portals to Gemini!).
But once I got there, it was magical. No effective searching, tons of broken links, no pictures, no monitization: all culminating in every blog/website I found, appearing as a shimmering oasis in the middle of a barren land.
Products, nay, pieces of art, put together by artist making art for the sake of creativity!
These personal sites, would be seen by dozens, at most hundreds, or maybe passed over completely.
No way to comment, no central hubs for socializing, and yet, more social than any social media.
Your weird relatives, boss, or coworkers, are not going to find you here, so say and build whatever you want! Just no pictures, unless it's ascii.
And you have to wonder around the Gemini web through links in zines, web rings, and personal recommendations made on blogs.
It's the most human feeling social setting I've found online in a long time.
And what prompted me to write this post, is realizing it's also given me the best value for time out of all the other social places I hang out online.
Prior to it SSB held pride of place for introducing me to cool people, projects, and ideas.
And SSB is still firmley in secnd place, still so much cool stuff happening there.
But Gemini is king. So many interesting people, discussing fascinating projects, and pondering strange and fearsome ideas.
To finish out a hierarchy, I'd put the Fediverse next, and Nostr below that, in terms of having cool people and stuff.
And I gotta give Tumblr an honorable mention, not for what it is now, but for what it was long ago, giving me the taste for that magic, that I keep on seeking.

App store > Fdroid and direct download of apks (just starting to try out Obtainium)
Email and calendar > Proton
Drive and Docs > combo of Markor and Syncthing for notes, and using Yunohost to host Cryptpad
Contacts > OpenContacts
Messanger > Beeper (a new addition, still testing), was using an sms app from fdroid
Authenticator > Aegis
Keyboard > Thumb-Key
Books > Voice for audiobooks
Only thing I have left to replace is the camera app, seems like nothing comes close, though I do use a different gallery app from fdroid.

I'm using Flycat and Amethyst mostly, but it's not as big of a deal for me here on Nostr, could achieve (and somewhat have already) something similar by following hashtags and actively maintaining my block list.

I did like Bastyon while I was on it, and the long, slow onboarding process really seemed to cut down on bots and spammers. Still a little too centralized for my tastes, though I guess that could have improved since I left.

Get a stainless steel pan from a restaurant supply, all the pros of cast iron, but easier to clean. Won't look pretty like an All-clad, but looks aren't important to the food.
