I can never understate how automated tests - not unit tests - using my custom framework have improved my productivity. Tests are focused on tricky code, unobvious behaviors or when combinatorial explosion would make manual testing prohbitive.

Dear ImGui keyboard/gamepad controls update:
- Added keyboard support for Shift+F10 or Menu key opening context menus (somehow this was missing).
- Gamepad north face button now open context menu. It used to be "Activate with text input / osd keyboard" e.g. for sliders.
- Activating a widget for text input with the gamepad is now achieved by a long press on the main activation button (south face button on most mappings, east face button for Switch/Japan).
- Updated control sheets accordingly.

@nprofile…8d7p (If that util/framework is using GLFW honestly it should be using imgui_impl_glfw backend for platform stuff, otherwise 100% chance you having missing features or bugs. But it seems reasonable that a vulkan tutorial rewrites a vulkan renderer instead of usig imgui_impl_vulkan.)

@nprofile…8d7p In addition, ImGuiVulkanUtil::handleKey() in that web uses API that were deprecated in 2022 & went unsupported in nov 2024.
The TL;DR is that:
io.KeysDown[key] = true ==> io.AddKeyEvent(key, true).
io.MousePos = pos; ==> io.AddMousePosEvent(pos); etc.

@nprofile…8d7p Nice tutorial! Would you be in a situation to update the imgui section (https://docs.vulkan.org/tutorial/latest/Building_a_Simple_Engine/GUI/02_imgui_setup.html) ? It is using GetTexDataAsRGBA32() which was marked obsolete in June 2025 and is a path that does not support e.g. dynamic font textures and will likely be unsupported in 2026. See https://github.com/ocornut/imgui/blob/master/docs/BACKENDS.md#rendering-adding-support-for-imguibackendflags_rendererhastextures-192 for precise instructions. Thanks.

The person who made this engine pioneered new rendering techniques this year https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNEo0aQkGnU Even being a "demomaking" techniques (aka trade-offs that wouldn't scale to a full game) it seems novel for the hw.

TL;DR:
- There are few MIT-licensed fonts.
- ProggyVector was 99% there but its license stack was not purely MIT (parts of it relied on an old non-standard license, potentially creating legal friction).
- To solve this, we had a new font created.
- ProggyFonts author approved 👍

Update: bug was in an old version of the tool-chain (v140/2015) and fixed in more recent ones. I frequently use old tool-chains to exercise them, but it was my mistake to update VS yet forget to consider the project was using an older tool-chain.

I can't bother investigating because it quickly puts the computer to a crawl, but I would guess it is getting into a weird parsing/tokenizing state where the remainder of the large source file is being processed as part of that expression, or something of that sorts. Also happens after updating toolchain.

To increase feature discovery I often try to make the software self-documenting. Here e.g. I added a help popup in the error log when running automated tests from the GUI. Each of them needs to be designed to not get in the way of advanced users.

Below 4K resoltions, without imgui_freetype and at same size than the classic bitmap font, most fonts didn't look great enough. New font IMHO looks worse at 13px (below selection threshold) but not shocking. From 14px it looks competitively good. Nowadays most apps would default to larger sizes.

Required quite some tweaks to get right & small. Still mono-space and configurable, just changes the initial default above a certain scale threshold. You can opt-in to the classic bitmap one. I believe new one is a better default, hopefully makes a non-configured Dear ImGui nicer.

Dear ImGui now embeds a vector/scalable version of the classic font by default, manually subsetted/optimized so it fits in 18 KB (opt-out possible). Embedding ensures easily and readily usable in all contexts. Should default to new one on most setups. Here's a compare of both. #ChristmasMiracle

I've been naturally tending toward using more ternary operators and writing more branchless code over time. I find it generally elegant and compact. But it's true that it's a little less easy to debug step into or to set breakpoints for.

Basically I want a decent, even unperfect heuristic to differentiate users doing:

vs

Where it is safe to call SOME_ASSERT(true) but I don't control the contents.

C/C++: Looking for suggestions for a way to sensibly detect if an assert macro was defined to emit no code (e.g `#define IM_ASSERT(_EXPR) (void)0`) in order to report it in my config/build info blob. In a portable way. It doesn't need to be perfect, only generally reliable...
- Could take address of successive functions to measure & compare their size, e.g. empty1(), withasserts(), empty2() hoping for alignment to not interfere?
Other ideas?

@nprofile…8x2j I wouldn’t be able to do it myself as I’m not comfortable with Linux etc. But I could give advices as to how get a PR accepted. Regression Tests are quite desirable (test engine has a mock viewport backend which can run headless, ideally we’d like it to simulate quirks of various systems). Preferable if the person can also have occasional access to a Windows to test their changes.

I noticed - and it happens with everyone, me included when I work with other's code - that for approximately 50% of problems they stumble on, the answer is either spelled out on their screen but overlooked, either 1 search/grep away but also overlooked. I keep tweaking comments accordingly to increase odds of discovery.

Spent 2 hours today skimming through ~8 hours worth of video of TheCherno painfully going through a 3-4 years update of a forked version w/ old copied code relying on internals, non-updated extensions, etc.
Took many notes and added comments to facilitate things for others in a similar situation.

That said, being product-oriented is something that many engineers are not good at. I imagine my experience would be valuable to some.

A next step could be that I make example load multiple fonts in a way that’s friendly to the fact that the working directory is something I can’t guarantee/control very well. Probably means adding some helper in core lib to avoid polluting examples with directory scanning etc

@nprofile…8x2j It was never idiomatically correct to write “font->FontSize * ImGui::GetIO().FontGlobalScale;” that’s what ImGui::GetFontSize() always had been for and no code in ImGui did that, so not sure where you got that from. But shouldn’t be too hard to fix!

@nprofile…4edy there are 2 problems with “shipping” other stock fonts: size is an issue (don’t want to start adding 400 KB files into repo) + at resolutions lower than 4K and small sizes, using the FreeType renderer is still quite desirable.

In the spirit of Dear ImGui de-facto "under-promise, over-deliver" strategy, the demo still uses ProggyClean 13 px bitmap font, with many details not immediately visible so it still delivers a underwhelming first impression. 👌 But hey, it takes time to nail everything.

There's such so much to do in UI world. Targeting wider audience vs perf-and-iteration-speed-conscious-devs would be another from-scratch project IMHO.

@nprofile…ymy6 The more I dig the more I realize _everything_ is a never ending rabbit hole :)
In the case of Dear ImGui TBH I feel like text is closer to be like 10% of the UI library, but it may be OK since we don't have fancy internalization requirements.
Next step with better text output functions/features I hope will help apps look generally better with less work.

Next 1.92.x releases should introduce simplified font loading API, better text functions, better general scaling & more.

FYI this is the largest amount of API changes since 2015, but I tried hard to minimize impact, ease transition, document things.
Also tried to keep font related changes to the strict minimum required for this release and it is still a lots (total ~500 lines worth of Changelog).

I also think I burnt myself out trying for months to solve general style scaling in a way that tick enough boxes (decent backward compat with old code, high performance, pixel-perfect quality), and I am still struggling tbh. Taking 4 days off now. Byyye

It's crazy what the cost of smoothly sailing forward with existing tech vs. reset and redo from scratch is really.
I suspect that 90% of the pain in moving forward with this has been due to legacy reasons, not breaking past codebases too wildly (some breakage will occur, namely `PushFont()` API). Would be 10 times easier on a blank slate.

@nprofile…0ajr my preferred workflow is using visual studio under windows. I despise cmake syntax as anyone sane, but it looks like the most likely path to decent use of vscode for building + debugging. What’s your alternative?

(I bought the Mac a year ago and only started getting a little bit more serious about it. I would prefer to avoid that distraction but some DPI and window-managing stuff I can’t test under Windows)

Working on DPI stuff means I need to learn using a Mac… and now I am learning how to use VS Code *and* cmake just to get a bearable workflow. It’s all very tedious & painful right now, but I suppose I could look forward and consider someday using a Mac as my main laptop...

FYI it's unfortunately a rather dry out-of-the-box experience right now as I didn't push all my test beds. So if you boot a sample app you won't immediately see a difference (they don't load fonts, etc.). But many things are much easier. Things will be more noticeable once wired in the right demos. No need to pre-bake anything manually.

Solved one problem - discovered five new ones etc etc. But made definitively good progress on the multi-dpi problem this week. Also had to rework some of the system when I realized that third-party extensions such as ImPlot will want to use the same helpers I used. Stay tuned..

Still working on font scaling. For smooth continuous zooming it's better to disable font hinting (FreeType hinting snaps glyphs to pixels, for obvious reasons) so I'm looking into ways to provide hints when changing size.
(I'll rework the text layout functions separately from the font system)
