The #UAPI group will be hosting the Image-Based Linux and Boot Integrity devroom at #fosdem2027 and the CFP is now open: https://uapi-group.org/conferences/conferences/2027-01-30__fosdem-devroom/
Pro tip for _not_ getting your talk proposal immediately rejected: do not mention kubernetes in the abstract

#systemd v262 has been released! Just 5 days late on the schedule, not bad as far as herding cats goes. Please enjoy the new release responsibly. Might cause severe allergic reactions to pathological contrarians, neckbeards et al.

#systemd v262~rc1 is out! If you don't help testing it out, YOUR favourite third party service will be next on the takeover list

Everybody knows the best time to deploy is on a late Friday afternoon, so good news: you can now go and push the freshly released #systemd v261 straight to production. No need to test it beforehand, claude told us it's all fine and we are all very good boys https://github.com/systemd/systemd/releases/tag/v261

Init scripts will no longer be of any concern to us. I have just received word that #systemd v260 is out. The last remnants of the old unix philosophy have been swept away - unit files now have direct control over their services

We said we'd release every 3 months, lo and behold, we released in 3 months! At least according to my timezone, which is the one that matters anyway.
Just in time for Christmas, everyone gets #systemd v259 delivered under their tree, courtesy of an old bearded man!

After three days in Berlin, two at #ASG where we had another magnificent conference with loads of amazing content, followed by the 4th edition of the Image-Based Linux Summit, where we had a full day of very productive technical discussions, it is time for the long journey back home to Scotland. First leg of the day on this big chonko to Koln. Will it depart? Will it arrive, and if so, where? Stay tuned for more DeutscheBahn-themed mystery travel!

#systemd v258~rc1 is out for testing! So far it has been a complete, utter, unmitigated success, although that might only be because nobody has ran it yet. Time will tell.

@nprofile…u6uc @nprofile…xg92 @nprofile…dzpl no, I am saying that GNOME is better than ever because of all the very nice and powerful features it is gaining. Alpine can still use it, they just have to either stop using musl or provide the aforementioned shim library. If the developers don't want to do that, it's on them, not on GNOME.

2025-06-11 13:35:44 UTC

Today is a good day as any to remind people once again that no, Linux is in fact not "about choice" http://islinuxaboutchoice.com/

@nprofile…u6uc @nprofile…xg92 @nprofile…dzpl nothing is "lost", GNOME is still there, in fact better than ever

@nprofile…u6uc @nprofile…xg92 @nprofile…dzpl not quite, we expect *someone* to reimplement the features that musl lacks, and workarounds for its bugs, in a shim layer that they maintain. It doesn't have to be musl, it can stay buggy and feature-less if it wants to. We are fine with providing the hooks to use this new shim library behind a build option.
Someone has to do the work though, but of course constantly complaining is easy, doing actual work is hard 🤷

Only ONE week left to submit talk proposals for All Systems Go! 2025! Only an abstract is needed for the CFP, slides are a problem for your future self, that sucker.

#systemd v257 is now released. Due to a sudden influx of many new programs that do one thing and do it really well, it is with great sadness in my heart that I have to reveal this latest release includes 4.2% more Unix Philosophy™ than the previous. We sincerely apologize for the letdown, and we promise to do better next time.

Early bird tickets are also still available - but not for long - go grab them while they last!

@pid_eins and myself are hosting a MC track at #linuxplumbers and the CfP closes next week. The best time to submit a talk was last month, the next best time is now!
"Kernel <-> Userspace/Init/System Management boundaries and APIs MC" - the focus is on topics related to the APIs and interfaces sitting at the boundary between the kernel and init systems/system management layers, with a special attention directed towards current pain points and omissions.
