This answers a lot of my questions about how ABS actually works. It seems like a more significant change to the actual rules than I realized.
Strike zones are no longer 3d prisms but now just rectangular cross-sections. This means some pitches that were actually strikes are being successfully changed into balls.
Strike zones are based on proportions of the batters' heights, rather than where chest and knees are while in their batting stance.
I'm a little surprised these changes weren't more controversial, since I don't think baseball officially changed those rules.

That wouldn't be your attitude if they were pushing a new vaccine mandate. You'd be opposed to it before all the facts come in. I don't think that's because you want to be on the "good" side. Similarly, I'm not opposed to what they're doing in Iran to feel good and I don't think that's a fair criticism. Iran has been the Neocons' target, publicly, for 30 years, with all the other disasters being precursors to it. Considering the same people who championed those are championing this, I don't see how it's different than if Fauci came out with another experimental injection for all of us.
It's fine to be opposed to something based on principles and experience before all the facts are known (which they won't/can't ever be, as you also discussed). Just like with the jabs, you can say "Based on what they've offered as justification, this is not a good idea." Maybe things work out totally differently and there were unstated motives, but that's not relevant to how we make decisions about the future.

I don't see it as much more complex than this:
Them: Give us billions of dollars to kill a bunch of people on the other side of the planet.
Us: Why?
Them: You'll just have to see how it works out.
Us: Fuck you. No.
It seems to me that you're putting the burden of proof entirely in the wrong place. The people intending to take your money and use it to kill people are the ones who need to justify their actions, all the more so when they have previously said acting in that way is dumb and wasteful. Opposing them should be the default position.

The reason "No new wars" was a popular campaign talking point is that they tend to become disastrous and expensive. How any particular instance turns out is irrelevant to this being a violation of "No new wars".
Also, Iraq is the wrong standard to hold "No new wars" to. The "new wars" being referenced are all of Obama's wars of choice, which were much smaller scale than Iraq or Afghanistan. In that light, any intervention on par with Syria, Libya, Yemen, etc. is a violation of that pledge (if it was actually a pledge).

We agree about most parts of this. The point I want people to appreciate is that it's not just about the ends. The means have to be part of the discussion. Even if people in MN broadly don't want criminal illegals there, it doesn't follow that they want them removed in this way and it should matter how the local community wants enforcement to be carried out.
It's also just as important that the cops who we both think are criminals be held accountable as it is that the criminal immigrants be held accountable. We want a society where criminal behavior is not tolerated, regardless of who the criminals are.

That's not all that's happening here, though. The people of Minneapolis, as far as I can tell, overwhelmingly do not want ICE running around their community and doing this enforcement (which is not confined to just those committing crimes) in this way.
The states are supposed to be separate republics, essentially their own countries with responsibility for their own law enforcement. Why should a New Yorker's preferences be imposed on Minnesotans?
Also, to say that it's only those criminals acting badly overlooks so much. Unaccountable cops shooting and macing people in the streets, breaking into Americans' homes without warrants, and throwing grenades into cars with kids inside is also bad behavior. I don't think that should be very controversial, either.

Acting badly for a long time doesn’t make it good. Many of us have been against police harassing and assaulting peaceful people this whole time. I don’t see why a comparison is being drawn to Covid tyranny. The wrongness of one has no relation to the wrongness of the other.
It’s also not clear to me why you think other people’s preferences shouldn’t be forced onto you but that yours should be forced onto them.

Discernment is obviously valuable but it’s also not right to conclude that things are acceptable just because they fall short of the most extreme case. Dave and Glenn both opposed regime change efforts in Syria and Lybia without saying either were just as bad as Iraq. Predicting that this and Iran will end badly too doesn’t seem like an overreaction, to me.
It’s also not right to excuse state violence on the grounds that the candidate who won campaigned on it. Had Kamala won, continuing the crazy shit they were doing would still have been wrong.

My thoughts aren’t fully formed yet but the institutions are there to protect the innocent from unjust state actions.
Due process isn’t for the criminal. It’s for us, to keep us from being treated like criminals.
So, my current feelings are that you’d better be right if you’re going to intentionally ignore those institutional protections and be willing to be held personally responsible if you’re wrong.

The way to regulate this is to hold people accountable for whoever they unjustly harmed with their actions.
If innocent people were harmed in El Salvador's crack-down, they deserve restitution. That restitution should be payable out of the gains from cleaning up the crime, including whatever was confiscated from the criminals.
