Unfortunately I – like most people – don’t have access to the admin settings for the instance I am on. And even if I was, I wouldn’t want to force my own font choices on all the other users of that instance.

Oooh I'm surprised you got this to work on the native web view. But I guess that is with Chrome? When I tried it in the past for Safari or Firefox, I ran into the same issues [@mass_driver](https://typo.social/@mass_driver ) did:
https://typo.social/@mass_driver/110672696434458327
I even discussed it with @npub16zf…dmla at some point but it sounded like it would be a pain to change the CSP settings to get it to work. Maybe the less-strict security/privacy behaviors of Chrome make it possible where it isn't for other browsers.
In the mean time I've at least been happily enjoying [@MonaApp](https://mastodon.social/@MonaApp )’s custom font capabilities:

$100 reward to anyone who can render a $1 bill on a webpage at actual size (as measured on the screen) without knowing the device. Serious.
(This is a revival of an identical challenge I posed back in 2013 that still remains unsolved.)

If you missed it before, you really should check out the newly revised version of @npub1qr3…nka0’s Jules Vernacular website, with over 1,700 examples of mind-bendingly cool / weird / fun / unique French lettering.
I’ve scrolled through all the entries multiple times and it’s now one of my favorite websites:

Nazi dipshits in 1941:
“Today the Führer […] decided that roman is from now on to be designated as the standard letter. All printed products will be progressively changed over to this standard letter. The use of Schwabacher-Jewish letters by authorities will in future cease”.
Nazi dipshits in 2025:
“To restore decorum and professionalism […] and abolish yet another wasteful DEIA program, the Department is returning to Times New Roman as its standard typeface.”

Incidentally, the ringtone and new text tone on my iPhone are from the original Star Trek boatswain whistle and communicator beeps.

All the dramatic flashes that flare up when interacting with iOS 26 make me feel like I’m in a JJ Abrams movie (even when the “reduce motion” setting is enabled).

This is impressive: a fully responsive website template system based on Star Trek’s LCARS operating system, built with only HTML & CSS – no images. Made by Jim Robertus, based on the original designs by Michael Okuda.

One of my favorite parts of making the mega @npub1kdx…g08v post about Black Sabbath was scouring Discogs for all these different colorways that have been used for the Master of Reality album cover.
Someone please get me a copy of that alternating rainbow variant.

Huge thanks to @npub1duc…l9ez for helping with images and putting together the supporting entries. And of course everyone else who contributes, edits, comments, or otherwise supports the site. A lot of this info is built up over literal years from many people in bits and pieces, so every little bit is appreciated.
Anyway, happy Saturday.

Pedantic Service Announcement (time edition):
When specifying time in the USA, “EST” stands for “Eastern Standard Time”, which is only really relevant for less than half of the year. During daylight saving time it’s “EDT” for “Eastern Daylight Time”.
When you’re not sure if the time you’re specifying is EST or EDT, just say “ET” or “Eastern Time”, which is a generic way to refer to the time zone, regardless of daylight saving status.
Same goes for Pacific / PST / PDT / PT etc.

2025-07-19 13:14:11 UTC

Pedantic Service Announcements:
“circa” means “approximately”. Don’t use it when giving exact dates.
Before a date, “c.” usually means “circa”, “(c)” means “copyright”, and “ca.” means “circa”.
“i.e.” means “that is” (i.e. “in other words”).
“e.g.” means “for the sake of an example” (i.e. “for example”).
“&” originated as a ligature of “et” which means “and”.
“&c.” and “etc.” are short for “et cetera” which means “and the rest”. “And etc.” is redundant.
“O.G.” means “original gangster”.

I’m not sure if this was the case with you, but I often have to correct people about what they imagine it was like to grow up in a Cape Cod house from the 1780s. Sounds romantic and cozy on paper until you factor in things like woefully weak insulation, absurdly warped flooring, and never-ending issues to upgrade ancient plumbing / electrical / roofing / etc.

I had to do a double-take on that top photo because it looks incredibly similar to the house where I grew up on Cape Cod, built in 1786. The barn out back was used as my dad’s workshop for building/repairing wooden boats.

Thoroughly enjoying the bug in the Max iOS app where title logos and plot descriptions are overlaid on imagery from completely different movies.

I’ve been staring at the logo for The Plane Train for several minutes now trying to decide if the shift of the dot on the ‘i’ and counter of the ‘a’ is intentional or not.

For anyone on the fence about whether or not to post about That Thing You Worked On: Please do it.
I love seeing the things people are doing here. Your hesitancy about self-promotion is a good sign you are thoughtful, and whatever you are working on is probably also thoughtful and interesting to others.
Also please include any relevant links. Hyperlinks make the web go ’round. (And include the https:// part at the beginning of the URL so it will be automatically turned into a clickable link.)

It’s been a tough year so far but I really find joy in the community here on Mastodon and the larger Fediverse.
There’s a satisfying DIY punk rock feeling to it all, as if I’m sticking it to dystopian billionaires every time I boost someone’s Mastodon post or fave someone’s Pixelfed image or try out some new Fedi app or follow some interesting stranger on some weird platform I’ve never heard of but can still interact with because it’s federated.
It’s what the internet is supposed to feel like.

I’m a big fan of @npub1svp…js2d’s Blacklight tool for checking the user-tracking tech on any website. Seeing all the trackers used on the sites you use and love the most can be a sobering experience.
https://themarkup.org/blacklight
One under-appreciated use of the tool is for checking your own website for trackers you might not even know exist in your code. It helped me uncover and remove some unwanted Google tracking code hidden in a JavaScript file for an old project recently.

I always had issues when photographing typographic material with the standard iPhone Camera app because Apple’s native image processing algorithms tend to be too aggressive with sharpening text and adjusting contrast.
@npub198r…unah’s new Process Zero mode is a welcome alternative for capturing images without all the auto-magic A.I. processing.
I made a test to compare the differences …
With default Apple processing:
