This here; when the tools are fit for purpose and make engineers’ jobs easier, you have to pry them from our fingers. All you have to do is look at the dedication to vim/emacs adaptations you’ll see in older coders to see the lengths to which we go to use the tools we feel work best.
It is a massive quality red flag if you have to force your staff to use a tool.

I want to note, though, that even with all of this enthusiasm, the PSF is still not as funded as it would have been if they’d compromised their mission and taken the bestringed money offered by the NSF. I'm trying to figure out if there’s a release process pattern that I can implement in GitHub actions that looks something like this:
0. bump the version of my package
1. build the new release
2. publish the new release to PyPi
3. build a docker image that installs the new release, along with all its locked dependencies, from PyPi
I am pretty sure I can do it all in one workflow, but I'd really prefer to reuse them.

I am in fact using it for most of my development tools these days, including Python versions. It uses python-build for the guts, so the versions are as good as anything I got from asdf or pyenv.
It's fast and relatively low-friction, once set up.

I think LLMs are basically the new generation of code templating engines, except that they are way more context aware and less fiddly to set up, at the cost of some present day output quality issues.
Now I want to try write a project layout generator driven entirely by LLMs and see if it would actually, like, work.

I have done my best to stay informed about $CONTENTIOUS_ISSUE. I read what I can about it, and hope I'm informed enough that my opinions about $CONTENTIOUS_ISSUE are similarly informed.
I've got good friends on both sides of $CONTENTIOUS_ISSUE who are -- for very good reasons! -- not objective about it. I don't think you need to be objective to have a valid opinion, either.
But, if I am not talking about $CONTENTIOUS_ISSUE very much... that's possibly part of why.

this. I legit don’t know what PyPi would do if fastly decided to pull their funding. I think it’s basically an existential threat that could end python package hosting as we know it. How do you even come back from that?
In comparison, a few packaging developers may need to learn rust in order to improve things... from a pretty good starting point. I don’t really see the comparison, or at least if I do, it’s not in favor of fastly.

One thing I hope is taken away from the #Glasgow2024 #WorldCon is that it is too soon to relax mask mandates at large events. I personally know over a dozen people who have tested positive with #COVID19 at this event, and masking was sparse at best.
I know masking isn't fun, it isn't comfortable, and it impacts accessibility, but I think it's still something events should consider making mandatory.
