Super tired of how expensive streaming is. Like look. I will never explicitly advocate for piracy, but like I’m sorry how is ad-supported peacock $11 a month? How is ad free Hulu almost as much as ad supported Disney plus AND Hulu together? What the fuck even is HBO(max?)s pricing structure?? Netflix is technically the most affordable but lowkey that’s only the ad supported tier which is painful, and Netflix ain’t exactly pushing out a lot of winnners lately (my opinion your mileage could vary). It’s kinda hard to argue against just downloading it all and setting up a plex server :/

Yea I completely agree. Many of the skills I have aren’t some advanced power-user shit, it’s stuff that I had to make work. And there is something to be said about how post 2010 a lot of smart technology largely started to boom and end users had no hand in the functionality of their devices. You could almost argue that custom ROMs and Jailbreaking were some hands on shit but that kinda era has long past. Nobody mods their devices anymore. Partially because there’s less need to now as platforms have addressed the features users wanted.
But I also feel that the shift towards subscription based models and turning the consumer into the product also held a hand in getting us here. Hyper convenience at the cost of your privacy basically has made it where EVERYTHING is a service, a service that when not working correctly can only be fixed by the dudes who made it.
Tl;dr yea people used to have to learn to use a computer if they wanted to have one. But the ubiquity of tech and the capitalism of it all really did a hard blow to our young people’s tech literacy skills.

See thing is, that I will give credence to, but the overlying issue is that is not how many TikTok users perceive the matter, or how the discussion is largely being conducted. Instead we have a bunch of teenagers and 20 year olds regurgitating effectively a copy pasta to their audience. Convincing them that TikTok as an entity is colluding with corporations and nations to censor information available. Which to be clear, they are. But there isn’t a simple fix for receiving this uncensored content, and certainly not blocking some big account you don’t even follow.
I suppose to clarify I can concede that who you block can affect your algorthm in some capacity. But the issue again, that’s not the discussion folks are having. Folks are being conspiratorial and unhinged.
