Thorium

https://social.linux.pizza/@Thorium

In IT by necessity, a geologist by training. In the conundrum of too many mineral, rock, and fossil specimens and, yet, not enough. Really love carbonates, hypabyssal and ancient rocks.

Linux and OSS lover. I really dislike both Microsoft and Apple. #linux #mineralogy #geology #cycads

Meta is a tool for the fascist movement, at Zuckerberg's behest. I avoid any and all dealings with it.

Amazing, some actually manage to live in the Sonoran desert. I'll definitely have to be on the lookout for these. https://big-picture-science.myshopify.com/blogs/news/plant-surprises-in-the-desert

Never seen them in the wild 😢. Had some that came with a houseplant. Unfortunately I had to leave them behind due to moving.

Liquid inclusions in quartz are used to determine the composition and temperature of mineralizing fluids. They can also make interesting gemstones. These are so called petroleum quartz from Pakistan with (at least) three phase inclusions. The hydrocarbons generally are very fluorescent under UV. First image from Facebook, the faceted stone is from Dynagem.

Looks good! Used to go to the farmers market at the end of the season and pick up a box of tomatoes for cheap and make sauce. Can't do that in southern Arizona though. Tomatoes really struggle here and the irrigation water is expensive.

The Tucson shows are over 😢. Here's some things I ran across. A large specimen of "fuchsite" with garnet from Brazil, a large crystal of feldspar, also from Brazil, and a bunch of weathered chondritic meteorites from northwest Africa.
