Okay. Humbly asking for some #Linux help here. When I installed Ubuntu on my machine a year ago, I did not know beans about Linux. Since then I've learned a bit, and when installing on other machines I have tried to make a partition so that I can change distros without losing files. But I don't remember doing anything like that on my main machine, where ALL my files are. Is there some way I can check to see if my drive is partitioned, and if not how can I change distros without losing data?

We are now at the part of The Worst Timeline where writers have to think, "Does this sound like AL slop? How can I make sure readers know I actually wrote this myself?" Any time I need to look something up and a link sends me to a site I have never been to before, I go in very much on my guard and look for evidence that the site is AI slop. I found myself very suspicious of an article where the writer used the phrase "Trust me" 9 times. Then I started worrying about the photo. Neither was slop.

I had forgotten that my #Minisforum UM890 Pro has 64GM of RAM. I really went nuts when I ordered this. I love it, by the way. About the size of a Mac Mini but so much faster than any Mac I've ever owned. And it never gets hot! I swear it has never once become hot! I don't know what the fan noise sounds like. Don't sleep on Minisforum. They make great computers.

Whelp. I don't know Python from Bash, yet here I am on the bleeding edge with my brand-new PineTab-V, the world's first tablet running on a RISC-V chip. Surely I am not the only person on Mastodon with one, but I am having trouble finding any sort of community online for this tablet. It runs a flavor of Debian made by StarFive just for this chip. My daughter just asked me how to say 厨二病 (中二病) in English. Looking through various translations, the one that strikes me as least awful is "teen angst," but it fails to capture the narcissism, pretentiousness, and sense of superiority of chūnibyō. "Main Character Syndrome" captures that aspect, but fails to identify the specific age bracket where this most commonly occurs, which is to say early teens. It's slightly disturbing that I can't remember every computer I've ever owned. I'm pretty sure the first computer I ever bought that was my own was the Apple Lisa/Macintosh XL I bought from Sun Remarketing. I also owned (and still have, miraculously) a PowerBook 150. Later I owned one of those boring Sculley-era Quadras or whatever they were called. But I also feel like a owned a PowerBook Duo? And maybe even the docking station for it? Or am I imagining that?

I just did a net search for "slack is hard with adhd," and learned that, surprise surprise, people with ADHD have diverse opinions about Slack. The first hit was a Reddit post titled something like "Slack is a torture device for people with ADHD," but the next hit was "How I learned to love Slack with ADHD." I find it impossible to make sense of. It's like someone handed me a ball of a dozen extremely tangled earphone sets and said, "Untangle this." No! I really don't want to untangle that mess!

By 1992,the Democratic establishment had an iron grip on the convention, and any progressive voices were simply kept off the stage. It was the fear of Jesse Jackson and anyone in Jackson's mold that motivated them to do that. That same establishment has maintained its grip on the party machinery ever since.

In 1988, I think a solid majority of college progressives voted for Jackson. I did, and all my friends did. The Democratic establishment was terrified of him. They were so afraid of him that rather than doing a roll call to decide they Vice Presidential candidate, as per tradition, they did a voice vote, because they were intent on keeping Jesse off the ticket, and Jesse would have won a roll call handily. They were afraid of him because he was unapologetically Black and progressive.

I think to most white USians, the Rev. Jesse Jackson is just a footnote in history. If they're older, they might remember some negative news story (because the mainstream news media did everything in its power to tear him down). But this man was big. He came in third in the 1984 Democratic primary with 18.1% of the vote, leaving candidates like John Glenn and George McGovern in the dust, and in the 1988 primary he came in second, with a whopping 29.3%, more than twice that of Al Gore.

I know that this is an unpopular opinion in the Fediverse, but as a parent I can't blame governments for trying to stem the madness of commercial social media. As a transgender person, I worry about queer kids in lousy homes being cut off from information and support, but I also know that social media and messenger apps can lead queer kids to self harm or worse. 今日、９年ぐらい前からお付き合いのあるママ友と出かけてて、彼女はテレビをつけて運転する人。（信号が青になっても気づかない💦）テレビにアンミカさんが出てきて、ママ友が
「この人、反日らしい」
と言う。
私はびっくりして、「ハンニチ…？」と言った。
「反日」なんてネット上の文字でしか見たことがない。生の人間から、ましてやそれなりに「友達」だと思ってる人の口からこの言葉を聞くと思わなかったから、最初は耳を疑った。
私は思わず
「反日という表現自体、右翼っぽくない？」と言った。友達は数秒黙り込んで、「この人、韓国人らしい」と言う。
「来た！」と思った。となりに座ってる私、外国人だけど？と思ったけど、これは言わなかった。
彼女は教養がない。本を読まない。たぶん旦那に「アンミカなんて反日の朝鮮人だ」と吹き込まれて、鵜呑みにしたんだろうね。家に帰って「アンミカ　政治」を検索した。やっぱり反日のレッテルを貼られてるけど、その反日とされてる発言を見たら、私が普段から言ってることばっかりだった。
ごめん、◯◯ちゃん、あんたのママ友はハンニチらしい。

これ言ったらフォロワー減りそうだけど、私はあくまでマンガオタクで決してアニメオタクではなく、むしろ9割の日本のアニメは苦手。お決まりの趣向が苦手だし、なんと言ってもアニメオタク大好きなあの声優声が嫌い。人間、そんな喋り方しないやん？昨日パートナーがアニメ映画『化け猫のあんずちゃん』をかけてたから見て、声は全部普通の役者で、すごい新鮮でめちゃよかった。アニメーションという表現は素晴らしいと思うけど、日本の「ザ・アニメ」の何が面白いのか分からない。

余談だけど、みなさんがアニメやマンガを通して知った典型的な「日本のマダム＝上品なおばさまの喋り方」があるでしょ？実はあの喋り方は戦前の女子学生のスラングですよ。明治末期から女学生らは独特な文化を築き始めたけど、『とんだはね子嬢』が登場した昭和3年には完全に確立していて、はね子ちゃんはその代表的なキャラクター。お転婆で何をやらかすか分からない、ワイルドだけど否定できないパワーがある。そしてあの独特な女学生喋りをする。当時の大人からすれば謎の人種だった。でも戦後になるとその女学生たちがお母さんに、女学生時代の彼女たちを知らない子供からすれば、「あれは上品なおばさんの喋り方だから、きっと一番正しい女性の日本語であるはずだ」と思われたでしょう。二、三十年後、今のギャル言葉が同じように定着しているかもね。#日本語 #女言葉 #女学生 #ギャル

「社会人」という言葉は日本独特の言葉だけど、本当の意味で「社会人」になっている日本人はごく稀だと思う。大人たちは必死に社会の一員になることを避けて、現実逃避ばっかりやってる。自分が所属するちっぽけな組織しか考えない。選挙で投票しても、大半の有権者は「うちのとーちゃんはじみんとうがいいとゆーから、おら・あたいもじみんとうにいれるわ」となる。少数派の人権も考えない。それより、現実世界と無関係の、暴力描写に満ちた、女を完全に男目線からモノとして描く少年系ファンタジーアニメを見て感動して泣きやがる。カップリングを考えて萌えたり、人工物であるアイドルを拝めて萌えたり。「社会」のために何か役立つことをしようと考える日本人は稀。（まあ、日本人に限った話ではないが、日本で生活する人間としてやっぱり日本の問題は大きい。）
いい加減社会人になれよ、バーカ。

I'm looking at statistics on multilingualism among USians. Apparently 3/4 of USians are monolingual. I can't find detailed statistics, but I'm pretty sure the 1/4 are almost entirely immigrants and the children of immigrants. I suspect that among white, non-Hispanic USians whose parents were born in the US, monolingualism is probably 95% or higher. Is it lower on Mastodon? #language #bilingual #multilingual

視覚障害者があなたの貼った画像の内容を知りたいのに、あなたが説明をつけていないとき、どうしていると思う？内容を説明してくれるChatGPTなどのLLMにかけてるよ。つまり、LLMに絵を盗まれたくないからこっちに逃げてきたのに、あなたが配慮しないから、結局あなたの画像がLLMの糧にされてしまう。

日本人の中にちゃんと外の世界を見ようとする人たちがいる。世界的に有名になる日本人は、ごく一部のマンガ家やゲームデザイナーを除いて、みんな実際に海外に出て活躍してる。視野が広い。ノーベル賞だって獲っちゃう。
エックスにいても、その空間がやばくなってることに気づかない日本人。ここマストドンに来ても、身体障害者に対する配慮が重要視されてることに気づかない日本人。呑気に使ってるChatGPTがやばいことに気づかない日本人。世界の民主主義が脅威に直面してることに気づかない日本人。なぜ気づかないかと言うと、日本語以外の投稿を総無視するから。それどころか、自分の狭い趣味範囲外の投稿を無視する。狭い狭い仲間同士でわいわい騒いで満足する。自己満足。

じゃあ、なんで他のサーバにいる人たちの投稿が見れたり、相互フォロー出来たりするかというと、それはActivityPubという、オープンで非中央集権・分散型のSNSプロトコルのオープン標準のおかげです。Fediverseという言葉を見たことがあると思うけど、Fediverse＝Mastodonではありません。MastodonはFediverseの一部です。Mastodonというマイクロブログ用のプロトコル以外に、PixelFedという画像共有プロトコル、PeerTubeという動画共有プロトコル、friendicaというマクロブログ用プロトコルなど、いろいろあります！これらの共通点は、誰でもサーバ（インスタンス）を作れること、そしてお互いに繋がることができるところ。

まず「誰をフォローすればいいの！？」という疑問があるのでは？マストドンにはアルゴリズムがないので、「あなたにおすすめ」みたいな機能もない。マストドンにはいくつかの「ビュー」（タイムライン）がある。デフォは「ホーム」です。ホームには、あなたがフォローしている人の投稿、あるいはその人たちがブーストした別の人の投稿しか見れないので、フォローしているアカウントが少ない間はこれはとても寂しいタイムラインです。次は「ローカル」のタイムライン。ここにはあなたと同じサーバ（インスタンス）に入っている人たちの投稿が流れてきます。mastodon.socialやmstdn.jpなど大きなサーバなら、そりゃータイムラインはカオスですし、次々と新しい投稿が流れてくる。そこから自分と合いそうなアカウントを探し出すのは至難の業。でもサーバが数千人以下であれば、タイムラインがほどよく落ち着いてきて、面白いアカウントが見つけやすくなる。1/?

I also now realize that the default keyboard's spell check wasn't working because I was using Sumire's Latin input rather than the default LineageOS keyboard without realizing it. (Sumire is the Japanese input keyboard.)

I'm happy to report that the transition from my #iPhone to a Google-free Pixel 3a XL running #LineageOS is going amazingly smoothly. I have not had to log into a #Google account even once. For #Android apps, I am using #AuroraStore, which downloads and installs the apps anonymously without a Google sign-in, and only a couple of minor apps have failed to install. Even my bank app was easy to install and sign. But I hate that there's no autocorrect or autocomplete.

193 votes is pretty good. The final percentages settled in pretty early in the poll and remained unchanged. The results convey the ambivalence of #Blind/Low Vision Mastodon users, and the many great comments I received from those users explain the ambivalence. I hope you'll read them. Unfortunately, you'll have to dig through lots of comments from sighted users who ignored my plea to not comment. The tl;dr is that we sighted users need to consistently add meaningful #AltText to our images.

That's the thing. I've seen clearly wrong AltText, which suggests the person who posted it didn't even look at it. I think anyone who would check LLM-produced AltText would probably find it quicker and easier to just write it themself.

We know how many would be alive if Israel had ended its brutal apartheid regime and let Palestinians live in peace on their own land long before October 7, 2023. That would be 100%, because there would have been no Hamas attack, and Hamas itself would probably have ceased to exist, or would have transformed into just another peaceful political party. The phrase means, “Homage to Amitabha Buddha,” but you don’t don’t even have to know that; you don’t even have to know who the Amitabha Buddha is, because it’s all automatic. It’s the password to paradise. No doubt this insidious notion led to all sorts of horrible people doing all sorts of horrible things over the centuries, because, just like the “I accept Jesus as…” thing, it’s your Get Out of Jail Free card. I wonder if anyone has ever done a serious comparison of this “Get into Heaven free” Christianity and the Pure Land Sect of Buddhism founded in Japan in at the end of the 12th century. It remains the most popular form of Buddhism in Japan, presumably because it is so easy and stupid. All you have to do is chant “Namuamidabutsu,” et voilà! You can get into the “Pure Land.” (1/2)

The real-world result has been that you have people all over the place who call themselves “Christians,” but could not tell you one thing Jesus of Nazareth is ever supposed to have said.
