Yes, but making a profile accesible to anyone with a browser is a very different thing from saying it can be hosted specifcally by another network or organisation. Ownership is also key.
Why do you think places like facebook say they own everything posted there? By your logic, because it's public anyone can steal it and host it themselves. Whatever the Fedi stsrted out as it emphatically did not give license for data theft, wholesale or piecemeal.

Yes, you are missing some things. It's less of a Privacy issue and more of a Consent issue.
The fedi is a large cluster of interlinked servers but it is also a Culture. We have Moderation standards here usually higher and stricter than elsewhere, by design. So you nesd to differentiate between Fediverse and Not-Fediverse for reasons of protecting people here used to our level of protection and safety standards. The Fedi did that when Meta's Threads wanted to link up; over 700 server admins refused to connect with it because Meta don't Moderate anywhere near as effectively as we do here. They were a large risk in safety terms as well as Meta being very problematic on various philosophical and ethical grounds.
The fact profiles and posts are ' public' here means we've given consent for them to be discoverable *on the Fediverse*. It does not mean open house for the rest of the internets' networks and services to farm at will, or we'd have joined those services and provided that data ourselves.
In the case of the specific user reporting the issue here, their post made it to Bluesky without their consent and also during the crossing it was muddled to give it a very negative spin. That user suffered horrible blowback here when a campaign was mounted to have him blocked en masse, all because of a coding mistake.

Might not be Vivldi's fault. Which Distro are you on? I would have said this about Vivaldi back on Garuda running KDE but here on CachyOS running Hyprland it's *significantly* snappier, as are a lot of other apps like Steam.
Floorp has Workspaces and a basic speed dial functionality, but you'd need to source an extension for a more comprehensive one. I wouldn't normally recommend it but one of the Opera browser variants might suit?

The whole foundational principle of software is that it makes work easier, allows us to do more than we can do by ourselves. If you're building it with the intent to aggravate users into becoming more capable software users, you're doing it wrong.

That sounds super-exhausting. My god, no. I appreciate a challenge, grit makes pearls, but I wouldn't want all challenge all the time. Sometimes it is vital that things just work easily and with the absolute minimum of fuss, and sometimes I just need to relax, you know?
Look. Some of the comments here are veering off into kind of abusive/derogatory/judgemental regarding device-usage, and I just want to be clear that wanting a box with one big shiny button on it is, by itself, not any kind of failing. You don't know what that person does in their lives that might mean they don't have the resource to sit and troubleshoot bugged code for four hours a day. This kind of article frustrates me.
To what end is Mr McFadden doing this? Why is he raising the spectre? (and why is this news enough for the BBC to report)?
It smells of fear-mongering, plain and simple, to make politicians more malleable to certain policies or requests. The article admits Russia is already attacking Europe and the UK, but there's no hint in his words of prospective Russian escalation or a bump in capability or...anything beyond "woooo Russia is a danger.", which we already know. And while he's seemingly focused on direct cyber-attacks against critical infrastructure there's no mention made of the fact the UK has long been a target of Russian propaganda and disinformation campaigns, itself a form of warfare.
To borrow a term from the software world this is F.U.D, Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt propaganda, reported by a service notorious for the same.

Three-person Chess is a LOT of fun to play! It's chess as we know it but the addition of a third player introduces tactical elements that 1 on 1 just can't offer.
The toughest thing to learn here is the spiral movement patterns - because they're full circles an unwary player can often see one coming but miss that they're exposed going the other way around it.
It also distracts from the more traditional movement which can be really beneficial. My Queen got taken when I failed to spot the danger coming from the other side of one of the concentric rings.
Might be tough to pick out on the photo but as each player borders another there are 3-space high walls preventing attacks to each other's flanks.
But I got TWO Kings in Check at once which felt amazing.
This game ended in a stalemate, my having done so much damage to each of my opponents armies before foolishly losing my own Queen that we were all struggling to mount offences. My sister-in-law had her Queen left so technically could have worked a pawn across the board to create another Queen but this would have taken hours and it was already midnight by this point so we conceded the match to her. Gripping stuff!
PS: The Alt-Text is in place now. I didn't have the luxury of ignoring my hosts to spend the time writing that up so elected to catch up on it later, now done. Valid reasons for non-Alt-Text do exist... :ablobwink:

There's a bit of an interesting conversation in the Fedi right now about Bluesky and the "Starter Kits" they have to help new people find their way into the experience. And, oddly [predictably], a bit of a backlash here against the idea.
There's some snobbery around it, like the Masto on-boarding experience teaches you useful skills that are worth "the effort" you need to put in to acquire what you need. It's one I hear from Linux Purists a lot too, from the types of gatekeeping wonks who have the skills and could fix your issue in moments but wank themselves noble about fostering a utopian culture where everyone learns these precious skills for themselves which finally slays the beast Microsoft and brings about world peace or some shit.
Bitch, software has been designed *from day one* to make human lives *easier*. It is there to do the hard things for us. The modern world, for better or worse, is a world where we use conveniences to cope. These elitists absolutely do too: they don't hunt for their own food, grow their own crops (are they even making their own meals???). They don't make their own clothing or mine the ore for their own tools. They accept a *million* little conveniences...but find your refusal to accept a little software hardship as Not Good Enough. Frankly: fuck off, you hypocritical knob-ends.
Not everyone has *time* to sit and puzzle out a thing. Not everyone has the resource to devote to learning the horrendously opaque Linux CLI. I think we need someone at Farage's level, at the political level, to start calling this tripe what it is: Fascism. This message that "The Left" have control of everything is pure Fascist playbook. FOSS can be miraculous. But FOSS guarantees neither great software (the Firefox example) or great people (Stallman (for starters)).
I agree that many Distros won't adopt Vivaldi as a default due to their idealistic purism. I strongly believe that compromise and pragmatism are the most *realistic* way forwards, because purism narrows the spectrum of possibility, like a horse wearing blinkers. While FOSS strives to maintain ideals good people and great software are ignored and rejected.
I've said it many times during my time in the Fedi; the people behind Vivaldi are the exact kind of people we thought/hoped were running Firefox. FOSS purism has starved them of the attention we have completely wasted on Mozilla.
If FOSS people can't recognise great people and great software that doesn't 100% follow it's rules -Vivaldi only being 95% open source- when they're here right in front of us being exactly what we say we want, then it should be abandoned like people are abandoning Mozilla.

I think that is what I love most, that people develop their own blends over time. The more unique the mix, the more my brain engages to puzzle it out.
And I'm so sorry you were ever ashamed of your accent (it sounds like that's very much past tense, happily). I know precisely how that can mark people out as different that others might use for mockery or bullying. Foreign accents are like new colours or flavours, always enriching. I'm a bit of fan of our accent diversity. This tiny island has over 40 distinct dialects; a fact I find constantly astonishing.
And what gets me is the *range* of diversity, and also the highly localised nature of some of them - you can travel a mere ten miles in some places to hear radically different accents being commonly spoken.

Gaming is very probably my primary source of Entertainment. Maybe it's always been. This is what's installed on my machine right now. Some I peck at, others get a bit more focus.
**Tron: Identity**. Just bought this last night (it's on sale for a fiver (£)). Seems *really* good from the two minutes I've spent in it checking it was working.
**Elite: Dangerous** My current focus. The original galactic trading, exploration and piracy game now in its 8th year of its fourth incarnation. I bought the infamously bad Odyssey expansion last week: three years beyond its launch woes it's actually wonderful. We now have Space Legs! Will talk more about this soon.
**Stardew Valley** The delightful Farming game I play with my Fiancee. We are ultra-cute in it. :blobgrin:
**Axiom Verge 2** Thomas Happ's Axiom Verge games are a Phenomenon. For me, just the perfect blend of slick Metroidvania game-play, stunning music (that Thomas also composes!) and the most beguiling multiversal Lore seen pretty much anywhere. Katrahaska. Yes.
**Qanga** I could become obsessed with this planet and combat sim but the current state of the Early Access game is rough. Still, as an early UE5 title it presents some jaw-dropping visuals. It also promises to let me Build my own bespoke bases on Venus, Mars, Luna....I want dis. I want dis *BAD*.
**Starship EVO** Formerly Skywanderers, this is THE best space-based build-from-scratch game out there. Recently updated to have a galaxy to explore with proc-gen planets, it is working on Survival game-play and also just reintroduced Mech building in addition to the core spaceship build experience. I can lose *weeks* to this when I've a build in progress.
**X4: Foundations** EVE Offline. Explore a simulated economy across dozens of star systems, become an entrepreneur building your own stations or just do the missions and enjoy the many gorgeous sights. Also a great time sink for pure relaxation.
**Hardwar** HARD. WAR. A classic from the early days of 3D acceleration. Elite, but planet-bound and with one of the best industrial-techno soundtracks you'll encounter. I don't play it much but dip in now and again for a taster of that awesome atmosphere and swooshy flight model. Self Horn-toot: there's a Steam guide to getting the game running on Linux written and compiled by me. 😊

Google have played funny-buggers with Chromium's extension format so Manifest v3 is here to effectively castrate all of your fave Ad-Blocking tools.
I've been testing Vivaldi browser this morning to see how it's own in-built Ad-Block works. Vivaldi are supporting Manifest v2 for the time being but only until mid 2025 when the Chromium code for v2 will be entirely removed.
Vivaldi's own Ad-Block solution has been described as less-capable but what does that mean in real terms? Does it offer the same level of protection as purpose-specific extensions like uBlock Origin? Is it even capable of offering that level?
I found the following web site that gives me an lovely visual representation of ad-blocking with a list of anything blocked and anything that slips the dragnet.

Yep, also expected. This is why people swear by uBlock Origin. All of that advertising and tracking nonsense *annihilated*. NB: That 1% is the test dev admitting there may be other Javascript web pages it doesn't specifically cover with their test.
Now here's the meat of this post:
Vivaldi Ad-Block ON | UBlock Origin OFF = 74%
That's actually reasonable, if not all-encompassing. The Test's own score-banding lists this as a good result. However, a glance down at some of the blocking reveals big names like Google and Amazon are slipping through the net. I personally wouldn't accept this.
Luckily, though, you can import your own block lists to Vivaldi's own default lists. The Toolz test itself lists a couple that they claim will plug the gaps in the testing. Vivaldi's forums linked me to a couple more. Four url imports later (importing the urls rather than text files means they'll update automatically)
Vivaldi Ad-Block ON with Imported Lists | UBlock Origin OFF = 99%
99% again, natively inside Vivaldi *without* uBlock Origin! That's really great to see although there are *tonnes* of caveats around this, for example it is only ONE test that might not test for everything needing blocked; it's far from a definitive finding so please don't take this as recommendation just yet.
Vivaldi have said they'll improve the Ad-block in the future as we approach v2 shut-down, and I think it's currently missing Dynamic Blocking which is a bit of a biggie, but my tests above are still very encouraging for the plucky Norwegians. I'll post the url sources in the post below. Feel free to chime in with your own thoughts and experiences!

To be fair, the Vivaldi folks had their own browser engine, Presto, back when they were running Opera (up to v12.5). The problem was their small team with meagre resources were finding it a real battle to maintain. Every month they had to issue patches for sites breaking - mainstream sites, not just the niches. Saving that work was behind Opera v15 switching to Chromium and when it came to making Vivaldi they apparently made the same decision.
I'm not actually sure why they went Chromium rather than Firefox but possibly even then it was looking dominant and they wanted to not be in that niche position ever again.
We can fight the monoculture war but for the moment, short-term, it's very much a battle lost.

Couple this with Mozilla's stunning (but wholly expected) [descent into Advertising](https://mastodon.social/@sarahjamielewis/113245689258934184) and the whole company just looks massively untrustworthy now.
That's Thunderbird now being removed from my phone -I had the new app- and my PC where it's only a backup to Vivaldi browser's in-built email client anyway.

FOSS Purism is bad faith interpretation of software; assuming Guilt until Innocence is proven.
I'm tiring of it being held up as some kind of gleaming angelic yardstick by which everything must be measured.
Devotion to that principle is as nonsensical to me as certain foodstuffs being impure to certain religious groups on certain days or whatever. You'll be leaving a lot of great food on the table because of some silly belief.
Sure it helps that those with the technical know-how can read the millions of lines of code and confirm it's benign but how do we trust they're doing that a) at all and b) regularly to ensure it's not been meddled with since the last review? The backdoor in xz utils was only caught by a fluke. Think about that for a second. Everyone assumed this software was safe for weeks, months, years...right up until it the moment someone found it wasn't. People erroneously trusted the the fact of it being open source meant it was safe.
Leading to the obvious question: what else has been missed? What else are we not seeing because we're blinded by assumption. *Nothing guarantees software is safe*.
And in the meantime great closed-source software from great people is getting pooped on by this kind of paranoid Purism.
I can't see what my neighbour is doing behind closed doors but I don't lose sleep at night thinking he's a terrorist, or judge him for not letting people in to audit him. At some point we need to simply trust that a good faith interpretation can be true, even if only for our own sanity.
