#WritersCoffeeClub 3.25 — What do you feel when a loved one reads your work?
I write *with* my girlfriend sometimes, so I'm always thrilled whenever she reads my stories. We met and bonded over writing, becoming good friends, and eventually becoming more. So, really, that doesn't bother me. I love it. She also proofreads for me, sometimes. Stories are just our thing.
My mother occasionally reads some of my work as well. It took me ages to even share anything with her. But again, she's also thrilled and proud. She enjoys my work. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.
As for anyone else in my family, well... I'll let you know when I get there.

There's one particular story that comes to mind for me. It wasn't my original fiction, but a fanfiction piece. I got about six chapters in, and then I just... ran out of ideas.

I *do* have notes, but they're never as clean as I want. I'm a bit messy but it always gets the job done for me, to be fair. My layout pages and outlines start off so neat in the beginning... If only they stayed that way.
I split my notes up like this:
• Character bios and their backstories
• Breakdown for chapters, their summaries
• Quick ideas I might randomly get at night
• Any and all worldbuilding ideas
• A glossary if it's needed (like for my cyberpunk series)
• Quotes to use for later, again from ideas at night

That I love dark or morally gray characters. That I love mending broken relationships. I love "found family" situations, and friendships where nothing can break those two besties up, no matter what. I believe love truly exists and that it will always prevail in the end. That there's light in the darkness, and you just have to find it. Or even this: hope is everything, and we need it now more than ever.

Friendship, actually. A good number of my closest friends are fellow writers. That's the best thing I could have ever asked for. The mutual support, fun and shenanigans, conversations, love, companionship, help with proofreading and editing, helpful suggestions, etc.
And hey, one more thing... I met my girlfriend through writing. I love that gift as well. It certainly felt like one.

This is a very good question. I think there were a lot of things that I *used* to struggle with when it came to finding the right words for experiences or sensations on paper. I'm trying to broaden my horizons and write more things. It helps to try a little bit of everything. I've grown a lot, even over the past few years. We should all continue to grow as writers.

It's actually some of my Doctor Who stories that feature quite a few of the characters, but I'm so proud of those stories as well. Getting their lines down perfectly, along with their mannerisms, always feels difficult when I'm trying to nail a scene with a ton of people in it. The more characters that you have, the more difficult things will become. I prefer smaller groups of characters in scenes, but that's just me. That's how I *usually* write, but not always.

For me, it's writing every single day, without fail, even if it's just a few sentences or paragraphs. Maybe someday that could be me. I either write nothing for a week or two, or I'm suddenly typing away like a madman, like I'm being hunted by a dark and scary god and my life actually depends on it. I wish there was a middle ground.

I'm in a writers group here in the 55+ condo village where I live with my nana. My fellow members absolutely adore me, which always feels like a shocker for some reason. I'm too down on myself sometimes, and I really shouldn't be. It's such a positive experience, and they really enjoy listening to my stories or reading my prompt answers that I'll write up. Our prompts in that group are usually a word or the start of a sentence, and we'll continue it and write 500-1k words about it.

I do~! I live in a condo village, and we have a writing club right here. I'm a part of it, and I love it so much. I'm the youngest member, and our oldest is actually 94 (and lived through the Nazi-occupied country where she comes from). She's a warrior, I swear. I adore her to pieces. She's even published her own book with her life story.

I can't *actually* talk about it because it would be a major spoiler, and I have readers for that particular story here on Mastodon. Readers who are close friends of mine, at that. What I'll instead say is that it was the best idea I've ever had, and it all came about one night as I was talking about a certain plot point (for a character) and a "what if" with my girlfriend. "What if" slowly became "why not," and now here we are. I made it work. I'm rather proud of myself for thinking of it in the first place.

I have in the past, but I try not to. If I start something, it's because I *want* to write it, and the ideas will usually always come, no matter how long the process takes. Patience is key.
If I have to abandon something, it's because that muse and those ideas just *never* come to me. It might take a year, maybe longer. But when the realization and the feeling arrive, I'll know it's time to say goodbye and give up on the WIP. It's an awful feeling, to be honest. I hate that.

"Wings of Quiet Longing" has two antagonists. They're traditional villains as well. One is worse than the other, but not by much. Then again, it's all a matter of perspective. They aren't black and white. No antagonists should be. It's boring.
Isma (another vampire): He's the big baddie and is far older than Socrates (c. 470 — 399 BC), among many others that are mentioned within the story. His age is never stated. He kept the vampires he sired as toys, just playthings. He's a horrible man.
Duncan (another vampire): This was the man Alistair sired. He's an absolute bastard, obsessive and possessive, impulsive and animalistic. He's a beast in every sense of the word.

Good question, honestly. The only thing that I can think of is the fact that I can easily sit down and write 10-20k words in one setting. Sometimes even more. I've heard a lot of people say that 5k is a good day, and while it truly *is,* I tend to write far more in one session. It just depends on how easily the words are flowing for me on any given day. Some days they just don't come at all.

No, never. Not only is my mind a chaotic mess, but I also have an *audio* podcast. I have a "radio show" for a reason. No video stuff of me, please. I never wanted a video podcast with me in it. I have 32k listeners, give or take a few on any given week, and they don't seem to mind. However, would I try talking about it on an audio podcast? Maybe. Who knows. Someday, perhaps. But I would never stream stuff like that. I love having the ability to edit out the stupid things I say lol. Putting a podcast up and streaming something are two vastly different beasts. I edit my own paranormal podcast, and I would never relinquish that control to someone else, either. On another subject, I also stream gaming stuff, but there's no video of me in it, only the screen as I'm playing, of course.

#ScribesAndMakers 2.23 — Reveal the answer to yesterday's poll.
1. I'm really honored that some of you thought this one was from me. Even my girlfriend did as well. This passage was from my favorite author, Kaylie Smith, and takes place during Phantasma. I could have chosen a hundred different quotes from this book. Gosh, I can't get enough of her writing. I just want to drown in her books. Her writing style is the closest thing I've ever found to my own as well, which she actually told me before. That touched me deeply. We've gotten to know each other and she's become a rather big fan of my Wings of Quiet Longing as well, which makes me happier than anything else in the world ever could. She's the coolest cat ever. 100/10 for her writing, highly recommend.
2. This one I had to tweak ever so slightly, only because the book is First Person POV. It's from Nocticadia by Keri Lake. She's another favorite author of mine, honestly. This particular book was a wild ride, and it was also my introduction to her writing as well. Again, I could have used any number of quotes from this one as well. So, so good. 12/10, highly recommend if you enjoy romance.
3. This one is from my own WIP. It's from a conversation between Alistair and Fenella, and it takes place during a dream sequence. I love this chapter so much, and it inspired my entire story.

For me, it's creating an internal (in my mind) and real (hand-drawn or commissioned) map of the area, so no inaccuracies are ever included while I'm working on the story itself, and that includes the layout of castles or streets. Just things like that. It's very easy to make mistakes. I'm nitpicky like that, and it helps me with the writing process.

Music. Relaxing. Reading. Watching TV. Gaming. Anything, really, to help inspire me. Any creative activities are helpful. Sometimes taking myself out of "writing mode" is actually the key. I can't force the writing to happen. The muse will return, the ideas will come, but I just have to patient with myself in the meantime. Then, after, the second act will come for me.

#WritersCoffeeClub 2.21 — Share an unexpected critique you’ve received. Why did it surprise you?
This is a *really* good prompt, but I can't think of anything in particular to write in response. I will say that I've had so much help from friends here on Mastodon in our writing community. Every little bit helps. However, I can't think of anything super surprising or unexpected. Whenever I've received a bit of help, whenever I've gotten some critiques, it's because I've asked for it.
Edit: Something finally came to mind. Someone told me that I should change the way I write, but she didn't understand that the particular POV I used was actually a thing. She was very critical and confused. It actually almost had me changing the way I write. This happened years ago but it still kind of sticks with me, sometimes. It was on another site.
I enjoy writing either of these:
Third Person Omniscient POV: The narrator has full knowledge of all characters' thoughts, feelings, and the story's past and future, enabling a god-like perspective. While less common in modern novels, it is used in classic literature and genres requiring a broad narrative scope.
Multiple (Third Person) POVs: Involves shifting between different characters' perspectives, often across chapters or scenes. This approach allows for a broader story scope and deeper character development but requires careful structuring to avoid "head-hopping" and maintain reader clarity.

Oooh, I could say so much about this one. *cracks knuckles* Let me gather my thoughts first. I write both spicy and sweet romance. Paranormal romance, romantic fantasy, romantasy, dark romance, etc. The whole shebang. Let's talk about somethings that bother me about the genre, or common misconceptions you'll find. I'll list them.
• Romantasy is only about dark themes... While some romantasy stories may have darker themes, there are also lighter and more lighthearted stories within the genre.
• Romantasy is only about love... *rolls eyes* This is a misconception, as romantasy can explore various aspects of love, including relationships, love triangles, and even love for magical creatures. Always. I'm a heavy, heavy gamer, anything sci-fi, fantasy, horror, etc. I also love Animal Crossing. I'm a huge fan of the The Witcher in general, books and games, for example. We have Baldur's Gate 3, The Witcher 3, Diablo 3 or 4, Stardew Valley, Mortal Kombat 11, Skyrim, LotRO, Call of Duty Zombies, and many others.
Gaming only further grows my creativity; it never smothers it. There's nothing better for writers, I swear. A lot of my author friends are also gamers as well.

#WritersCoffeeClub 2.20 — How has a setting surprised you?
Oooh, let's talk about #TheCityOfOpulence here, from the #DigitalDystopiaSeries. Every single thing about the setting where this series takes place surprised me, especially in the first story, which I eventually have to finish posting on AO3. Everything about it came as a shock. It developed as the story grew and blossomed. Things changed. Areas became bigger. Business came to be. Battlegrounds made themselves known. This entire setting came from a homebrew (original) #TTRPG I ran, something #cyberpunk, dystopian, and #SFF for my players, and that's also where my characters came from. They were NPCs that I created. As I began writing the story itself, attempting a novel that slowly became a series, things only grew all the bigger. I love love love this setting to death. Ethera is a beautiful, terrifying city. Citune is a gorgeous planet with tons of lore. This is my favorite setting I've *ever* created, hands down.

Ooooh, what a fantastic question. My friends and family know me so well, and that makes this one really hard to answer for me. I might have to say (in reference to new friends) that it might be my affinity for #LEGO. First off, I hate when people say that audiobooks don't count as reading. I roll my eyes so far back that I can see my brain. In my eyes, even comics count as reading as well. Why shouldn't they? I have a small circle of friends from Discord and we're all authors and artists. For birthdays, we might write or create things for each other. We also do a Secret Santa project as well every year! These are friends I've had for a decade or so.
Usually, for the friends I've done things for, my gifts have been stories related to Doctor Who, just because I *know* what makes my friends smile and what they really love. Giving is fun. Creating something to give someone is even more fun. It comes from the heart.

As much as I possibly can without overdoing things. I never used to describe things to the level that I wanted, for imagination, and I'm trying to change that. I'm trying to go into detail about the surroundings and settings that my characters are dropped into, but by being subtle about it. There's nothing pushy about my descriptions. I hope so, anyway. That was the old me, years and years ago, but writing is always a work-in-progress journey.

Update: I'm home, and Esmeralda came home with me. The doctor ran tests, did an x-ray, and then did an ultrasound. She told us to bring her home and enjoy the last few days with her, and gave us some new meds to help her feel better.
Long story short, there's a medication that she's on that could cause fluid buildup. It was a one in a million chance, but it happened to my baby. She has fluid in her lungs and in her belly. We'll be bringing her into the vet tomorrow or Wednesday. Say some prayers for her, please.
It's so hard being a kitty mama, sometimes. I've spent the entire day, not even exaggerating, spending time with her. I've cried all day and I'm worn out.

It was 2015 and I spent the entire weekend camping on the beach in Seaside Heights, New Jersey for a music festival of sorts. They're called stopovers. Long story short, Mumford & Sons get their buddies together, all their friends and their bands, and put on a hell of a show for a few days. It's brilliant. Local bands play for a few days before as well for those who are either in the area or camping, and it brings in a ton of business for the area. I had the best weekend ever, made a ton of friends, danced my heart out, enjoyed the time with my dad, and had such a blast. What a lovely time that was.

As a game or dungeon master for many TTRPGs (including DnD), I'll say this... It's drawing your own maps and things. Not enough people do it anymore. Draw stuff! #WritersCoffeeClub 1.25 — What comes first: setting, character, plot? What comes next?
Sometimes it's the plot. More often than not, it's the characters. They'll come to me first. A lot of my characters were created for either the purpose of TTRPG stuff (tabletop roleplaying games) or roleplay stories (which is just collaborative writing that I do with friends or my girlfriend), so I've already written a plethora of stories with these characters. The plots come to me later if I finally decide to knuckle down and write a long serial or just a novel with them. C'est la vie.
Edit: I should add this... It's usually a scene between characters that I've already created, and then I have to write an entire story around said scene. It's funny how that works out sometimes, isn't it?

#WritersCoffeeClub 1.21 — When writing about unpleasant feelings, how do you avoid alienating the reader entirely?
To be fair, if readers are looking for cozy, carefree stories without ever having *any* unpleasant feelings they won't be picking up my stories from the start. Every synopsis or blurb warns of this. My work features emotion of all kinds, the good *and* the bad. The stories have a range of emotion in them, scenes that won't always be happy-go-lucky and carefree, and that's okay because it's just life. Things can't always be perfect and good, you know? Regardless of all that, this isn't a problem for me. My readers are generally looking for (emotionally) tortured characters who have good recovery journeys after the fact.

Let me just talk about the story I'm currently working on. This is funny but the only humans/mortals are the servants and residents in the town. The majority of the main cast are vampires and werewolves. As for human characteristics, they're all very similar to mortals. Random: I used to be a beta reader. I did it regularly. I'm always open for just reading something and giving my opinions as well. Sometimes we just need a friend to tell us if something stinks or not, you know? It helps. And I'll be honest, whatever you THINK sucks is actually usually fantastic. Imposter syndrome is tough.

Always. I recently spoke about "vivid verbs" how in love with them I am, so I'm always finding things to add to my arsenal. We continue to learn. It's never ends, and it's a tough but worthwhile journey. I'm enjoying the ride.

#ScribesAndMakers 1.11 — Is your creativity ever inspired by dreams you've had? If so, can you give an example.
That's usually the case with me. Dreams inspire me. I have very vivid ones. I watch a lot of TCM and older films or television, so sometimes I'll even dream in black and white. I'm also a fan of musicals and am myself a musician, so I'll occasionally dream in musical or Broadway format as well. But I do have very intricate, interesting dreams. Plots or characters for some of my stories might come from them. My current WIP, which I talk about quite a bit, actually originated from a dream. There's a good example.
