My reasons also include the labour abuses, the sports-washing, the nationalism, the way unhoused communities are always violently displaced to make rooms for new sports stadiums in cities where not everyone is housed, but obviously, officially, the rules that exclude members of my specific community, queer folks and gender non-conforming folks and trans people who have always been in sport, will always be in sport, and have every fucking place in sport because sport is a fucking game we play on a planet where it's acceptable to bomb school-children, so choose your Olympics or your queer friends. Up to fucking you.

@nprofile…5uqu I told a therapist I was something of a hermit (pre-pandemic) and they acted like I'd just insulted myself. But hermits are just a kind of people! Yeah some of them live alone because they have no choice, but lots of them are just people who like animals and nature and solitude more than they like not-that!
I wanna celebrate my "hermit-ness" because it gives me joy. There's so much joy to be found in solitude, if you know where to look!

Hey, I just wanna acknowledge how joyful making art is. It's fun to complain when it goes poorly but I also wanna acknowledge how *good* it feels to just make art.
I love how art makes me feel powerful, how it can fill me, how it can sweep me away to fantastic places before I've even left my chair.
Those of us who make art - even if just for ourselves - have a gift, not in the talent but in the joy.

My personal preference is we shouldn't really have super-important religious "leaders" in general, I'd be an anarchist religiously if I weren't agnostic. I think individuals exploring their spirituality and forming communities with others is a good and human thing to do. I appreciate some people are called to minister in whatever sort of way they are, I think that's been how humans do it since before we might have been human.
But I'd prefer we do that by, like, socially divesting importance and material support from centralized religious structures and toward the communities that heretofore have been oppressed by those structures. Not mass bombing.

There have always been people, for whatever reason, who find sense and purpose in isolation - the hermits, the wise-people at the tops of mountains, the witch in the woods - we have these stories because they are part of our experience. Who knows where those isolated people went in their thoughts, dreams, and daily wanderings? But we know wood got chopped and water got carried.....

@nprofile…7ppx My observation is that most folks aren't "over" the various awful and difficult things, they are just pretending and/or getting flooded with more awful and difficult things so that they don't quite know what being "over" something feels like.
You will do better (in my opinion) processing heavy things at your pace, slowly and deliberately, without a rush to get "over" them but instead to incorporate and grow from them. IMO.

Also! Protests don't have to be huge to do most of these things! Even a small protest can help people come together and practice solidarity. Small protests can feel really empowering, especially if you are having a good time and manage your expectations.
I've never been an organizer, but I have *helped* people (with, like, sign making and that sort of thing), and planning a protest can be a really instructive way to learn how to work with other people for a goal.

I take the view that protests are a multifunctional tool for social change. Expecting a protest to "work" is like expecting an egg to make a cake.
Protests aren't for convincing politicians to do the right thing, they are for:
*grabbing media attention
*connecting disparate activist and advocacy groups with each other
*demonstrating public engagement
*helping people find joy and/or comfort in their movement
*disrupting the business-as-usual
*practicing how to work together in a large group for a unified purpose
Every protest I've been to (I've been to some) I've seen friends and colleagues mix with strangers, be introduced to each other, exchange pamphlets and contact info, people singing and laughing together (even for dire events), people learning how to act in solidarity together, people (including me!) seeing how policing works to maintain the status quo even when that status quo is bigoted, racist, ableist, colonialist, classist, and heterosexist.
Protests can do lots of things. They don't (usually) make politicians change their opinions. For that you need direct action and mass movements, both of which can arise out of public protest.

You wanna get a rat addicted to sugar water? Make the button unreliable, that rat is gonna press that button like his life depended on it. You want to turn that rat into a quivering lump? shock the floor at unpredictable intervals, that rat will never be the same again.

When people say "extreme leftist" I imagine a person who extremely wants everyone to have good food, clean water, shelter that's safe and accommodating, health care, community, and meaning, all in a diverse and thriving ecosystem, and will do almost anything - including changing economic and political systems - to get it.
Is that what they mean by extreme leftist? :P
