Someone mailed me some raised print books and, while I am an adult Braille learner/beginning reader, I can read raised print a billion times faster than Braille. This is fantastic! I tried learning contracted Braille, what we used to call Grade 2, but I am at the point where I will remain, I believe. I'm comfortable with grade 1. Uncontracted Braille. I still say, if you can learn Braille as a child, do so. If you have a blind child, put them in Braille classes. They will thank you later even if they protest now.
I get why Braille is prefered. Vastly easier to produce, especially digitally, but I wish places such as the NFB understood that I learned to read in another way, and Braille might not be viable, frankly.

Catching up with #BookTube topics this morning and, I have thoughts but nobody will have me on their show. :)
I'm trying to find some solid report/commentary on the notion that, actually, the publishing industry, especially traditional publishers, love—and let me repeat this again—love LLMs/AI and are just waiting for folks to just get used to it or for the younger generations to just roll over and take it. I'm not finding anything. I don't believe, for one second, the industry dislikes LLMs/AI. Individual people might, but you can't sit there and tell me publishing company CEOs are scoffing at LLMs/AI. No. They are just biting their time. I do not—for one second—believe that publishing dislikes AI but I feel I'm in the extreme minority in this. Other authors believe the industry dislikes LLMs just as much as they do. I can assure you, this industry is lying to you. The publishing industry loves AI and is salivating at the day where it's just accepted without consequence.

Fuck my life. My country's social security system is the pits. I got survivors benefits because my abusive mother died. I didn't know social security counts that as extra income. I was getting the maximum amount on SSI. I was approved for survivors benefits but then they lowered my SSI payments because I'd have extra income. I know people don't like it when disabled people get things for free, but I wasn't going out and buying cars with it. Fuck.

Eventually, I love the idea of having a reader group like other authors, but I wanna do it on an open-ish forum, with RSS support. I was thinking about using Groups IO for this since I don't want to self host, but what suggestions do you all have?
For the non-creative type, a reader group is one where one could participate and talk amongst each other about, well, me and my books, without having to deal with the outside internet.
I'm debating about leaving it open to read. You could read, but you can't comment unless you join the forum. I am unsure if my readers would like that though. Every FB group I've seen is private, so I want a space where my readers can still talk to each other about me and my novels that will be published but nobody else can comment unless you've been accepted into my circle.
If my readers want it private, fully, then it will be a private forum.

I was banned by this blog owner in a Facebook group because I think they thought I was promoting the use of AI when I was requesting RSS. I said I loved their website, their dedication, the effort, and all the good things. I did mention that I wanted to subscribe to the website via RSS. The RSS feed was/is broken for me at this time. I explained why I didn’t want to follow via email because I only use email for communication and I use RSS to keep up with the websites that I enjoy. I was called a Tech Bro. I read the rules very carefully before I posted what I did. I am very confident I did not break any rules. Shrug. I fully get it. My pen pal neighbor and I are now gossiping about our newest neighbor that has every tech gadget known to man, including smart cameras and stuff. For those new followers, the good neighbor and I that write notes to each other have been doing this for months now. We met in my lobby. It was loud. It was chaotic. It was a place of pure anxiety.
It wasn't a place to talk and get to know each other. It was a place to hurry onto the next thing.
So—we exchange text files on a flash drive, dropped into a bag. The bag will also sometimes contain cookies, fun tiny flowers, interesting things from our time out in the world, to give the text in the text files some more context. We could just email, but we began this because our email inboxes were unruly at the time. We never stopped communicating since.

I know a lot of developers are on my timeline, so let me give you a little bit of a secret. If you make a literal DRM free only bookstore retailer that only sells DRM free e-books, you would hit a gold mine without even trying to do so, and you must accept all genres. I know Smashwords exists, but there’s a reason why independent authors continue to publish work via Kindle. It’s easy. In fact, it’s so easy that even the upload process doesn’t need a lot of formatting involved. This is the key. Make it very easy to host e-books, and let authors set their prices and let publishers set their prices, and you would have a money making machine. Also, make it global. Even if publishers Geo restrict it. The design doesn’t have to be a torture either. Have an HTML page from the 90s that displays the book cover, the title, some buttons that do various things like choose a book format, E pub, PDF, about the book, about the author, reviews, and that’s it. It doesn’t need anything more than that. Anything more and it’s just a bloated waste of code #WebDev #Bookstodon

If you can, make sure to edit your original post instead of posting the correction in another post in the thread. I see so many people boost the original post but since it wasn't edited, nobody reads 50 reply threads the way I do. Editing isn't a bad thing at all, despite what some #Fediverse users tell you. The way federation works, your correction might not even make it to all the instances. Editing is common on most third party apps too. Editing makes you more trustworthy in my eyes. I love the edit functionality, and I am old enough to remember when Fedi nearly flipped it's shit in a negative way when the feature was first proposed. It's the best feature we have. I'm in one of those, a touch screen is the worst design ever made, moods. Why anyone thought this was a good idea is beyond me. I'm a pretty good typist but it took me thrice as long to compose one of my lengthy text messages asking a very important question, than when I used my PC to send an SMS message. Why did our generation believe typing on glass is cool. Nobody can type on glass. I'm a very skilled typist and it takes me nearly 10 minutes to fiddle with the awful latency on the keyboard running VoiceOver. I was in conversation with a person that blogs on Facebook. When I said I write on my own website, she was endlessly baffled as to how I have readers. I Explained my RSS fee gets submitted to directories, and people share my stuff in forums and indie social media and she just could not comprehend it. Since my audience is not a built in audience with an algorithm, she doesn't understand how I can maintain an audience. She kept asking me, if there's no algorithm, how do people find out about you and keep up with what you do? I explained that I have a mailing list for the folks that don't use RSS. She asked me how I monetize my content. I said, for the things that's on my website, I don't aggressively monetize it. I ask for donations if people like it. But your work is open for everybody to read it? She asked.
I explained that the reason why I keep my work open access is so that everybody that's in non-privileged countries could access it and read my stuff.
I'm sorely convinced that the Internet has ruined itself.

Hey Apple, I know you can send files via the Share sheet, but do you know what I mostly use the Share Sheet for 99.99.99% of the time? Copying something to the clipboard. Text, URLs, you name it. Could one of you brilliant code people explain to me why such a useful button, copy to clipboard, is hidden behind a menu that isn't the first, more, menu? I'm starting to think tech people don't have friends to share stuff, because if they did, this button wouldn't be hidden behind a super secret view more menu in the Share sheet that isn't in the first, more, button in the Share sheet. #Apple

Thinking about every dehumanization of bloggers I’ve seen growing up. To me, it seemed like pop culture hated, and I mean hated, bloggers. I grew up in the 90s and early 2000s. Now however, I get more information, news, personal perspective, and even educational material through people running blogs on their own websites but when I was growing up, you weren’t a real writer if you had your own blog and website. You were the laughing stock of the Internet if you had your own blog and your own website. Imagine if we encouraged blogging and website ownership decades ago. To put things into perspective, the dehumanization of bloggers and website owners is almost the same as the pop culture dislike of podcasts today. #IndieWeb

I tried to fork this and make it my own by making the file from scratch without a template, making it so that you can type in your own tags in categories and not choose from a list, and other enhancements, but I am a terrible script creator. Yeah I am sad about this but I am actually not as sad about this news as I thought I would be. Look into what other transportation options your city provides outside of busses and paratransit. There are cities and states that have rideshare that partner with paratransit so you can get same day ride access. The only downside is that human rideshare drivers will continue to deny guide dogs but I don’t really understand why other blind people think this is overall better than normal ride share outside the guide dog issues. I was at my local Social Security office applying for survivors benefits and, out of nowhere, Karen just had to yell in the back about how my account needed extra scrutiny because I was a sneaky person.
I guess she's still holding a grudge over my fax outsmarting?
But she interrupted the lengthy interview to interrogate me about my mailing address. It's a snail mail to email system, because the American Social Security administration isn't fully accessible and still, still, sends documents via paper, or on antiquated CDs with document files on the CDs. I don't like CDs lying around my house, so I don't have that option. I don't know enough Braille, yet, to read the Braille notices, but her condescension was sucking the air out of the room.
A 20 minute back and forth ensued, wherein she railed about how I was not allowed to have a mailing address that's different from my physical address. My calm but annoyed rebukes were proof, in her eyes, that I should not be treated with kindness.
She loved making me feel small, in front of all her workers.
But it is true. Fellow minorities stick up for each other, sometimes.
Luckily, other workers saw through her bullshit and clapped when she ranted about how I was the reason the fax machine hasn’t been working as it once did because of my malicious compliance.
Still, I was no badass, in person, I'm afraid. I think the minority workers knew what she was doing because many came over to assist the new girl, I suspect, speed up the applications.
I was grateful they didn't ask to detail the family abuse, they just asked me how long I’d been separated from my mother and how long has it been since I initiated no contact.
I was more grateful for that grace than they could ever know.

Thinking about moving to a writer/reader focused instance, but the ones I looked at don't allow automated posting. I follow enough blind people to basically where I'd love a different local timeline, and I frankly enjoy being around readers and writers. I have an account on writing Exchange but it is a backup account. I want one that allows automated posting because I use IFTTT to post via email and or SMS messages and, as you all know, to share old articles of mine at different times so people in different timezones can maybe see it. I got an iPhone for someone else, and so I called #Apple before it shipped, and I asked if they could enable VoiceOver before shipping because the particular person was not as tech savvy as I am and the representative told me they don't have a way to enable VoiceOver before shipping so it starts talking when the person turns it on, and they told me there also was no way to keep track of that one phone as it gets closer to shipping because they don't know what IMEI model they will ship to someone. Um, what? I don't believe that for 2 seconds. It shouldn't be that hard. Turn VoiceOver on. Turn the phone off. Put it in the box. Ship it. #Accessibility #A11y #IOS

If I had $1 trillion, I wouldn’t need to go to Mars or reinvent the subway or some other stupid shit, I would give every homeless person in my city enough money to live 20 years in a hotel so they can get back on their feet. If there aren’t any hotels open then the rest can live in my mansion for like five or 10 years or 20 years or however long it takes them to get back on their feet, and if they don’t want to leave, fine, but we’re experiencing all kinds of art together and I would invite small independent artists to have dinner with us and the only obligation I would have is to like, just sincerely listen/read/taken in their art and maybe pass the dinner rolls if they ask for dinner rolls.
