A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge is a book I've read three times and consider essential reading for any sci-fi fans and in particular hackers -- it has space usenet! It's an epic space opera with an incredible setting and a gripping conflict on a galactic scale which many sci-fi novels promise but few deliver on.

The thing is that I fucking empathize with people who believe in a language and are frustrated with the pace of its uptake. Obviously. But I don't use that discomfort and frustration as an excuse to attack anyone who criticizes my language. It's pretty hard not to, given how personal those attacks tend to be, but ultimately I respect people as engineers making the right decisions for themselves and if that means my work isn't applicable to their needs then so be it.

The FSF is dead, but its message cannot die. Free software is the philosophical superior of open source, and its lost a lot of ground due to the FSF's negligence and incompetence that we must recover. We need to underscore the political and philosophical meaning of free software independent of them and reclaim our movement so it can succeed without them.

To address this we need to better educate people on how money and free software can co-exist in a way which does not threaten FOSS, and for people to learn and *grok* the social and economic dynamics of free software. The commercialization of FOSS is not a bad thing -- so long as the *critical* provisions that all users are equally entitled to share that wealth and capitalize on it on equal terms is upheld.

Here we have big players like Elastic, Redis, MongoDB, and numerous smaller cases as well. The practice of building off of the lavish advantages of being in the FOSS ecosystem, then pulling the rug and seeking exclusive commercial monopolization of the end result.

I suppose there is a part of it which is the darker side to the democratization of software. It could have happened through the free software movement, but instead it really happened more through the lens of capitalism, with a race to the bottom to make the developer experience as seamless and easy as possible, to train up software engineers without these values so they can produce more cheap software.

This year has been godawful on service operators on the net, the level of malicious garbage being slung is off the charts
In addition to The Big DDoS, SourceHut has seen about one layer 7 DDoS per week, and in any given week this year between 40 and 70% of all new accounts are spam
I've spent basically all of my time in 2024 dealing with bullshit and none of my time doing anything useful for the platform or its users.
