2025-12-10 15:18:13 UTC

the thing about generative AI that infuriates me most is how anticollaborative it is.
"look, instead of taking time to reach out to someone who has more or different knowledge in this field, possibly building human connection and reinforcing our shared existence on this planet now i can make my roboslave code a rough approximation of the thing i want in seconds"
and the thing that makes it even more infuriating is that it's the general attitude and behavior of the average codebro that makes the roboslave more appealing to most people. it's not that the norms weren't interested in coding things all along, it's that tech culture is so incredibly toxic that a soulless robot is preferrable to a fossbro

if you, like me, are in the US and relatively stably employed, consider giving (or giving more) to your local food pantry/rescue/bank on your next paycheck. the shutdown means SNAP benefits won't go out and those places are already stretched thin. give money if you can, they know how to stretch a dollar 10x as far as you do.

the accidental poetics of the Beaufort Wind Scale:
0 Sea like a mirror. Smoke rises vertically
1 Ripples with appearance of scales are formed, without foam crests. Direction shown by smoke drift but not by wind vanes
2 Small wavelets still short but more pronounced; crests have a glassy appearance but do not break. Wind felt on face; leaves rustle; wind vane moved by wind.
3 Large wavelets; crests begin to break; foam of glassy appearance; perhaps scattered white horses. Leaves and small twigs in constant motion; light flags extended.
4 Small waves becoming longer; fairly frequent white horses. Raises dust and loose paper; small branches moved.
5 Moderate waves taking a more pronounced long form; many white horses are formed; chance of some spray. Small trees in leaf begin to sway; crested wavelets form on inland waters.

the spouse did an implicit bias training today. the trainers asked the attendees to come up with back stories for people based on 4 pictures of folks of different skin color and implied class (clothing, visible hygiene). spouse, being spouse, thought they were sus and said he didn't think they had backstories because they looked like they were AI generated. trainers admitted they were. spouse then asked what prompts were used to generate the images. trainers were flummoxed. everyone got a training about implicit bias, but not the one they were expecting. I'm so proud.
