I am on holidays in Rome, and have roamed Rome too much - I won't be able to come up with a Weekly #MobileLinux Update tonight.
Depending on how things go, I may be able to compile it tomorrow - if not, we're going to have a double feature next Sunday.

For current options, it's not too easy:
- FuriLabs FLX1 reportedly is a good experience, but no mainline,
- RK3588s options (Liberux Nexx, dawndrums Divine D) seem multiple months away,
- FairPhone 5 lacks audio support on mainline (USB-C dongle works though),
- Shiftphone 8 (same SoC as Fairphone 5, but 12 GB RAM is supposedly shipping in August) and how well support will pan out is unknown.
OnePlus 6, Poco F1, Pixel 3a are affordable, but also aging (with hard(er) to replace batteries).

I think it really depends on which OS you want to run, and what the time frame is.
If the PinePhone works for you, I don't think there's any much need to worry. I was actually almost positively surprised during my experiments that led to the blog post: Mobian Trixie (which ships GTK 4.18) worked surprisingly well overall from SD card, and the Alpine 3.21 container is nice and small and keeps a working Megapixels around.

The PinePhone Pro tangent in the "Sidenote: What about the Librem 5?" section in https://linmob.net/gtk-418-the-pinephone-and-megapixels/#sidenote-what-about-the-librem-5 had to be corrected after playing with Megapixels 2.0 alpha 1 on the #PinePhonePro
The APKBUILDs used to try this can be found at https://framagit.org/linmobapps/apkbuilds/-/commit/c8952b4e6b402e7a88859c30b20fce685c0cfc26

Thank you! I hope I did not miss any huge GTK 4.18 showstoppers, BTW, if you just want to have the option to use Megapixels, you could (in addition to that distrobox approach, if that takes too much space) also always boot into another OS on sdcard - while, when using tow-boot on that sdcard, still booting from eMMC by default (this flexibility is what I love about the PinePhone).

2025-05-15 18:19:34 UTC

Last year, I tried to help #Librem5 users to have a better experience when using #flatpak apps by not wasting space due to an outdated, buggy release of flatpak.
Today, I've added something else that should help on every distribution to that same post: Avoiding translations you don't need.

They are in an early stage still, but from what I could take in, I think that their approach can work. The only thing that gives me pause (knowing the app ecosystem) is the 5.5" 16:9 display (see also https://www.reddit.com/r/dawndrumsdev/comments/1k18zcv/divine_d_next_generation_gnu_linux_phone/msgrq0d/).
It's definitely nice to see a phone designed in Africa (Tunisia)!

2025-05-15 15:59:45 UTC

It looks like the Liberux Nexx is no longer the only upcoming RK3588s phone:
The DawnDrums Divine D will use the same very SoC, running a Debian/@mobian based OS called DawnOS (with GNOME Mobile or Plasma Mobile).

I guess I am just sad for GTK4 effectively obsoleting what where the 'main choices' in #LinuxMobile when PINE64 and Purism revitalized the niche/userspace software ecosystem in 2019 ff. I'll see if I can rephrase the comment to make the sentiment more clear; if I can't, I'll just remove it.

I guess I worded that poorly. I was thinking of the combination of hardware and graphics drivers, where often OpenGLES 2.0 is a first base line reached, and later on, more is accomplished. Like with Asahi: December 2022 2.0, Mid 2023 3.1. Sadly, not all efforts move along as quickly, think etnaviv. Add the fact that the PinePhone Pro (ES 3.1, Mali T860) has issues with the new renderer..
(I could also look up when the last SoC with a Mali 4xx GPU was announced, but sure, that's DOA).

Well, you know how it goes: Contributions welcome!
Looking at how broken my next branch (with true-mobile-mode in landscape) is with FF136, I honestly don't want to put the maintenance burden of making something like user0's true-mobile-mode default in m-c-f on anyone.
Moving things between bars (the tab counter) is just so super prone to breakage.

It's not really different. It's mostly fixes to make stuff work with current Firefox 136.
Before this release, you would get "Failed to read the configuration file. Please contact your system administrator." with Firefox 136.
Aside from that, it's minor cosmetic things, see screenshots.

Generally yes, but while you can package everything into a .deb, getting it accepted into #Debian (and I assume similar for #Devuan) is a different thing. There's a reason why the #UbuntuTouch @npub1lmq…xa4a people were super happy and proud when they managed to get Lomiri accepted into Debian.
Maybe Debian/Mobian contributors can chime in here :-)

Oh, but many people need it or even want "phone". If I had a Euro for every time I've been asked "but does it do phone calls reliably" which obviously in the age of VoLTE introduction is impossible to answer without "where do you live and what carrier are you on" ... it would have paid for a pretty decent laptop, at least.
BTW: Isn't it ironic that VoLTE with its "crystal clear call audio" was introduced just when everybody started to use crappy sounding BT headphones?

This is a nice hack, but IMHO it's not the solution yet, just for viewfinder speed alone (it's not that fast on old smol Pixel 3a at least).
Megapixels IIRC works around this by setting different resolutions for 'just view finder' and 'actually taking pictures'.

Thanks for the explainer! This latest build uses 3840 https://gitlab.gnome.org/1peter10/snapshot/-/compare/main...foolish-resolution-patching?from_project_id=25833
@npub1nur…9rzx the previous pipeline run from one day earlier build used 4032, so it may be worth a try on OP6 (it did not on my Pixel 3a, weirdly, because the 47.1 apk patched to 4032 did).

Where/how did you get that version info? My best guess is that your install command lacks a .flatpak at the end and you ended up installing the 'unpatched' upstream flatpak and not the one you downloaded.

For the lazy ones interested in what magdesign's change does (and for those who don't want to pollute their install by randomly putting newer than packaged libadwaita etc):
Here's a flatpak: https://gitlab.gnome.org/1peter10/snapshot/-/pipelines
You will need the GNOME Nightly remote: https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Nightly and org.gnome.Platform
While you are at it, I recommend giving the Nightly of GNOME Maps (for Transitious public transport) and Image Viewer (Loupe, for cropping images) a try - it's totally worth it IMHO!

It also works with 47.1, I have rebuilt the postmarketOS package to try this: https://linmob.net/weekly-update-07-2025/#last-minute-camera-hacks
If you want to go with the latest Snapshot code, creating a patch file and add it to the nighly flatpak manifest: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/snapshot/-/blob/main/build-aux/org.gnome.Snapshot.Devel.json and build that (I'll see if I can find the time to do a writeup).
I can't recommend a lot of packages in your distribution, I've tried it a bunch and the best case outcome was that I had to do a lot of cleanup to be able to update again.

Using Halium may not be fine for you, but if it's fine for others that's fine and it's none of your business. Same for using mainline vice versa. Let's focus on what unites us and not division. Let's work together. This niche is small enough already, splitting it further makes no sense at all.

3. The Nexus 5 is still 32bit. As far as I could see, all devices supported by #UbuntuTouch Focal are aarch64 devices, so it seems that they dropped the architecture - and that can make sense. While the Nexus 5 may still be fast enough for some, this does not apply to other 32bit devices. Building everything (images and apps) for an additional architecture consumes money and CO2, there's extra testing required and explanation why x can't be had on 32bit eats ressources

I think it's good to have an example. 🙂
1. Not taking software into account, after over 10 years, your Nexus 5 (introduced in late 2013) won't be as fast as it was one. All hardware does age. Most notably, battery chemistry and storage media (eMMC) will perform (way) worse than on day one.
2. Unfortunately (all other things unchanged) the world around you is moving to faster devices. Even if Ubuntu Touch apps still run almost as fast, the mobile Web just won't.

That said, you're right. My OnePlus 6, Poco F1, Pixel 3a all work better than a PinePhone and cost less, but there's less interest.
We need to try to build more hype with these older devices ... but how do that WITHOUT putting the pressure on the people that made them work as well as they do (the latter is part of my reason why I have refrained to make hype-y videos, the other part is burn-out 😉 ).

I generally agree, but there can be value in making something new, too, if it is different enough (IMHO, Librem 5 and fxtecpro1 make it over that hurdle). This thing IMHO would too, provided it works well enough. It looks like it's goal is could/should be "This your only computer for the next X (5-10 maybe) years, period".

https://liberux.net/ seems like it could be the #LinuxPhone I've been waiting for (assuming, RK3588s does not burn through that battery in minutes ;-) )
(Thanks @npub1yhc…sm2l for the hint!)

Thanks @npub13a8…am5l and others for all the hard work!
Also note: "The schedule is now available (modulo talks for which the speakers haven't yet clicked on the confirmation link)" - so there's even more good stuff coming!

Yeah, it can be made to work somewhat okay. Now I just played with it for a little bit of time, and setup of new accounts or some PGP dialogs don't work well, and search is also difficult, as the left bar remains quite wide without adjustments.
I hope I can find the time to share what I did in a way that does not make maintainer of a "mobile-config-thunderbird"; I've got enough on my plate already ;-)

2024-11-18 17:34:42 UTC

After I had borked my last #postmarketOS install, I did not want to bother with setting up email accounts, and just copied my #Thunderbird profile over - how hard can it be?
I managed to come up with something I can live with, unfortunately it required customizing the icon bar by hand, so these changes are likely not directly transferable via user.js and co.

Disabling Secure Boot should help. (Or trying Ubuntu, I recall that worked with Secure Boot on.)

Definitely not, I've done it multiple times on PinePhone, PinePhone Pro, Librem 5 with Megapixels, Decoder and Millipixels - but still, it's a great achievement everytime someone else does it - especially on a different device! Well done! @npub1fx9…z4hg @npub1zz7…zcgf

It may also be that it feels obsolete in terms of distro support. Take the support for rtl8723cs in the mainline rtw88 driver that landed with Linux 6.10.
In the old days, projects like @npub1ua9…sk4k or @npub1vnu…8mqn would have jumped on this, yet, AFAIK, only @npub16ss…2rua #SailfishOS port ships this so far.
It's normal and still sad - while we have mainline support many Qualcomm devices (e.g., Pixel 3a), the PinePhone support is still more complete.

I think the issue is that chatty's XMPP support is based on libpurple, which also makes it - even with stuff like lurch - an unreliable at best candidate for working chats with OMEMO in my experience. Thus is it's IMHO not a huge loss.

81voltd is packaged in #postmarketOS now: https://pkgs.postmarketos.org/package/master/postmarketos/aarch64/81voltd
I am quite positive that 81voltd will land in postmarketOS 24.12 (or, maybe, before in a service pack, so that you can use stable - which does not suffer from 'breakage by upstream' as much as edge does).
Also, regarding Plasma Mobile: Plasma Mobile 6 is a lot better than previous releases, I am writing this from Plasma Mobile on OnePlus 6, happily accepting rare weirdness for a better virtual keyboard.

Like with Jolla's subscription model, I like this. It allows non-developers to put their foot down, and as this is an optional subscription, it feels less weird: you get all the updates if you don't pay, too.

I have just used my #Librem5 (with #postmarketOS Phosh) as little desktop for a few hours, and it has been surprisingly smooth.
I am pretty sure at least part of the reason was that I have attached one of these ridiculous phone fans for gaming.
(I have got a random one from Amazon, don't ask for the model, it's not a good fit - attaching it I struggled with the kill switches and volume rocker.)
