This is why I get so mad at my coworkers who are all "If you're not coding in your spare time, it means you don't really love it and aren't worth hiring!" (Well and the industry standard of that as well.) I actually do love coding, but I also love balance in my life. If I'm coding all the time, I'm not refreshing my brain in other ways. So annoying!

Oof! My mom actually got called up for the Whitey Bulger trial, but she got in a bad bike accident just before, so she ended up getting excused. Which is probably good for her, since she is a lot more sensitive than I am. :)

Not just for dementia, either. I was shocked to learn I’d have to hire a nurse, not a home health aid, to manage my mom’s tube feeds, and at rehab it’s the same thing, but I’m supposed to do it at home.

My mom’s had a lot of anxiety since her surgery. I don’t really know how to help that. Especially when it keeps her from sleeping, which keeps me from sleeping. It’s definitely not an easy thing. Sending love to all three of you!

Like. Why the pushback? Prolonged grief disorder is NOT the same thing as grief. Yes, a lot of people have stupid ideas about grief, but most people don’t experience it as a disorder. It’s like there being a difference between being down for a few weeks and having major depressive disorder.

Except in the original they don't talk, so I feel like that one should be ok. But I think they may also have left out some because they didn't want to make people sad, like Old Yeller or Marley and Me or Where the Red Fern Grows. Some thoughts:

But other studies have shown that cannabis use by teens has significantly decreased in the last decade. The article doesn’t mention that, which makes it feel more fear-monger-y than a useful warning that those teens who do try it are more likely to get more than they bargained for.

Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence while profiting from slavery. Washington led the country in war and peace, all while profiting from slavery. Many of those who wrote and fought for their own rights vehemently denied those rights to Black people. If we can't acknowledge these aspects of our history, how can we understand how the current systems continue the oppression that grew from those historical practices and thoughts?

The point isn't that she was racist so women shouldn't have the vote. It's that we continue as a nation to erase the racism of important historical (and current) figures, and that this erasure is part of the system that continues to oppress and victimize Black Americans. White people don't need to renounce our own rights to ensure those rights are also extended to all, including and especially to Black Americans, who have been denied them for centuries.

I believe she has a PhD in it, but not sure how much it focused on the issues of the US Black culture which created the dance form, nor the oppression and cultural appropriation Black people face in the US, so she may have been ignorant of how her approach might have been seen as mocking the dance form and culture, rather than trying to do something unique in it. There’s a convo to be had about breaking on the world stage, but I don’t know enough to have it. :)

I keep reading about it because I just don't get what she was thinking. Best I can tell she knew she couldn't win going head-to-head on the usual breaking moves and decided to try something different. But she hasn't been clear saying that, so it makes me wonder if I'm right or not. To a large extent I don't feel I'm qualified to comment, since before these Olympics, I haven't really thought about breaking since the 90s.
