One of the existing grid links is an underwater high voltage D.C. cable from the west of Scotland direct to North Wales beneath the Irish Sea. Links don’t HAVE to be on pylons over land. And offshore wind farms can be interlinked underwater in the same way down the North Sea, bypassing England’s grid. Solutions shouldn’t be constrained by National Grid crying that ‘this is how we’ve always done it’.

I was recently introduced to this valuable dashboard, monitoring how much renewable energy has to be artificially constrained (‘curtailment’ they call it) because there isn’t grid capacity to distribute Scottish renewables into the English grid. There’s an eye watering economic cost in this wastage because generators have to be compensated for being unable to deliver their licensed output. Northern Ireland joined the republic’s energy market and both north and south trade power both ways with their only near neighbour (mostly FROM England to support the Irish grid). What Scotland needs is its own national energy market which is free to trade with neighbours and the pressing need would then be for them to build their own links to Ireland and Europe, since you can’t run a system of variable renewables WITHOUT interconnection with neighbours.

And yet, the logic of Independence is that one of the country’s biggest exports to support the economy would be its limitless supply of renewable energy which it would be free to export to other countries. The country’s energy security would also rely on being able to import more than enough energy for its needs from the South on those occasions. The Spanish Constitutional Court admitted appeals filed by the Spanish government against laws passed by the Community of Madrid in 2023, which violate the rights of trans people. In December 2023, the Madrid Assembly passed laws which:
1. Makes exceptions to the absolute ban on conversion practices

You’ve heard of Lithium Ion batteries. You may have heard of new Sodium Ion batteries (plentiful raw materials but not quite as good performance). But today I learned that there has been very successful development of Potassium Ion batteries too, and they are reported to perform as well as the Lithium ones. That column of the periodic table is wild.
Battery chemistry and photo voltaics are some of the fastest moving technologies in this era. It reminds me of the heyday of silicon in the 80s.

Britain’s electricity demand always plummets in the wee small hours. Falling to 20MW or less is not uncommon. At 3.30am renewables we’re meeting 87.5% of that (almost certainly constrained by controllers) but, because gas, nuclear and the burning of imported wood pellets must go on, we were stuffing 6.1GW into exports and hydro storage. 6.1 GW would have kept another 1 million EVs charging at 6.6kW. And remember: most EV drivers only charge once a week or less so that supports lots of EVs really

A nice day down at the grid I see. 73.5% renewables and an excess of generation that means a bit is going to Ireland and a lot more into storage. We’ve not hit peak solar yet but the configuration of the grid means we still currently have to run gas, nuclear and biomass generators to provide frequency and voltage stability. The oil companies are keen on pumping CO2 into rocks as a means of forcing out oil or gas that would otherwise be hard to reach so I would start by looking whether that’s involved. They’re incapable of altruism unless there’s a profit in there.

It’s not uncommon. Agile prices tend to dip between the breakfast / morning commute peak and the early evening peak, helped by the fact that solar output almost coincides with working hours. Add a good windy day to the sun and you’ve got the ingredients for low prices. The only inconvenience is the need to avoid using power between 4-7pm (unless, of course, you’ve got a battery).

Whilst people were wringing their hands over Cobalt (used far more widely in purifying fossil fuels) the battery techs simply chose a better, more stable chemistry that uses no Cobalt and no Nickel. For static energy storage you can even replace Lithium with Sodium, which is just sloshing around as salts in the ocean. Replace 12 volt systems in cars with 48 volts and presto! less copper. Insulate homes properly and you save mightily.

We are transitioning from the first age of energy, where we were profligate wasters, building engines that were only 20% efficient, to the age where we use resources more wisely to achieve the same effect. Witness the way Britain’s power grid dropped from shifting 330TWh per annum to around 250TWh mostly from energy efficiencies (eg lighting a room with 10W instead of 100W).

I feel very uncomfortable with analyses that paint with such a broad brush. These men (they are almost exclusively men) are a minority within their age group. You look at them and you instantly recognise the type. It’s not an age thing. It’s not an economic thing. Like all countries, Britain has the capability to block internet traffic to and from Twitter/X. However, a hard block would be contentious. The New Automotive data doesn’t distinguish because it comes from the DVLA API filtered for registrations in July 2024. The SMMT data does have breakdowns between private and fleet sales but in the long run it makes no odds as fleet vehicles are usually leased and progress into the secondhand market after 2 or 3 years where they become private vehicles. New Automotive’s page also shows that July’s sales have now brought the number of EVs on Britain’s roads up to just shy of 1,140,000 — that’s 3.8% of all the cars registered on Britain’s roads, or about 1 in 25. So far, in spite of the doomsayers, these EVs have not registered any obvious effect on The country’s electricity grid, which pumps roughly 250 Terawatt Hours of energy every year. The grid was delivering 330TWh only a few years ago. The drop is due to more efficient usage.

Here now is the second of the regular monthly UK car registration analyses, produced in this case by New Automotive. These are new vehicle registrations for July based on analysis of DVLA data. What leaps out here is that, for the first time, hybrids (of all kinds) have overtaken petrol cars as the largest category. EVs here are calculated to be 19% and you’ll need to squint to find Tesla (second place, behind BMW EVs) and just a small fraction of the whole.

It’s sad that people don’t call out the racist +sexist +homophobic +transphobic attitudes there and then. That is no indicator of what they’re thinking but it’s a consequence of our cultural preference to ‘not make a fuss’. Our reluctance to make a fuss is endemic. The anti-German thing was very strong in the fifties and sixties but it’s remarkable how we Brits largely swallowed it when membership of the Common Market brought lots of desirable German cars.
