In the last couple of years alcohol free beers and with it plenty of nice, non-alcoholic drinks really took off here in germany. Many new (to the general public) brands and a solid choice of well tasting, refreshing drinks.
This year it feels like we are undoing that, the coolers of my local supermarket are full of [Regular Drink] but with alcohol, like a good lemonade but with prosecco, and iced tea but 10% abv, etc.
I just want something refreshing in this heat, not to be drunk 24/7 😩

New toy!
First impression is pretty damn nice. Hats off to the developer for getting such a clean spectrum from the fairly small crystal!
Not only is the resolution impressive, but also the low scattering environment resulting in very clear photopeaks.
Firmware also seems pretty well thought out, the auto-detection of radionuclides works quickly and reliably.
I love it!

Has anyone here tried SLA-Printing onto PCBs before?
As in: Replace the print bed with a PCB and print as usual. I'm wondering how well the resin sticks, especially to uncoated copper.

Last week a Biergarten here in munich made the news because someone found a "hotspot" with their geiger counter:

OF course I had to go there and check it out myself!
The entire area was slightly elevated, barely noticeable and well withing reason for a change in ground composition. That hotspot must have been a tiny rock.
In the end I got a nice ~30 km bike tour and a good breakfast out of it.

One major thing I miss about twitter are the bear bots.
You follow them, and every couple of hours you get a nice picture of a big bear (the animal kind) in your feed.
I couldn't find anything like that on mastodon :(

Positive experience of the day:
I sent a manufacturer a random eBay offer of one of their products, asking for an opinion if it still works. Not even an hour later I get a reply that it will mostly likely be broken and an explanation on what's most likely broken.
I have learned a bit more, but unfortunately I can't undo diffusion inside a semiconductor

My thesis has lead me down a rabbit hole and now I'm in the mood to build something with one of the many high Z, high band gap semiconductor detectors, they seem really simple. But acquiring one is either really expensive, or "Grow crystal from solution" but it's mercury salts in DMSO or some fucked up shit.

The german weather service @nprofile…u2rr had an open day today in Oberschleißheim, and it was great!
They were surprisingly open and let people near all the sensitive equipment, much appreciated!
Of course, most interesting to me was all the radiological stuff, from air monitors to in situ gammaspec and dose rate probes from the @nprofile…5s6q

Raspberry Pis really come with their own flavor of computer sickness, don't they.
I pulled one from the scrap pile at work and since then I've been thinking about what to do with it!
Many fun ideas, but the second I think about them in any way I realize that this can be done better and cheaper with either a microcontroller or a cheap (or often times free!) old computer.

All these Internet horror stories have ruined peoples reality checks.
It's now the third time someone messaged me along the lines of "oh my god there must be a lost source here" because their geiger counter showed elevated readings in a public building like a train station. Then you look at the place and it has all granite walls / floors.
"It can't be that, I'm getting strong readings everywhere, it must be a buried source!"

This gauge block set is a colorful mix of manufacturers and serial numbers so it's probably not the most accurate and definitely not ground together, but hey, it was cheap on eBay and it's more accurate than I can work with the mill 😁
According to my micrometers it's all within tolerance, but those aren't calibrated either so eeeeeeeeh

And here it is!
Griebnitzsee has fewer uranium tiles than Rosenthaler Platz, but they are way more active, over twice the count rare at similar geometries. Also, I like the saturated red a lot more than the thinner orange at Rosenthaler Platz.

This is for underground power delivery, most likely 10/20 kV "Mittelspannung", and it even is the flexible variant, with multiple strands in the central conductor, as opposed to one rod 😉
Surrounded by cross linked HDPE, covered in a layer of conductive plastic to smoothe the field as well as some copper for ground.
Typically found in pairs of three!
