A view of Rhododendron arboreum from our second storey window. R. arboreum is the national flower of Nepal and is native to the area in and around the Himalaya.
The tallest rhododendron in the world is a specimen of R. arboreum which stretches up 20m (65') on Mount Japfü in India.

The Internet is full of recipes. Here's one: https://tasteofmaroc.com/how-to-make-preserved-lemons/
The peppercorns and bay leaves are purely optional. We turn the jar over every day or two.
Store bought, we like Les Moulins Mahjoub brand. Organic with a little cayenne.

We go through salt-preserved lemon at a pretty steady pace. Mince and add to a grilled cheese sandwich along with smoked paprika. Use as a condiment with rice and lentils. Sprinkle on scrambled eggs with mozzarella. Use as a garnish for hearty soups. Add to vinaigrette salad dressing. Serve thinly sliced with cantaloupe and a small wedge of Stilton.

Veterinary clinics have had an extremely hard time retaining and recruiting staff since the emergence of COVID. Clients can be extremely rude and it's frequently a high stress environment u, and it's hard to thrive in a situation like that. We've seen multiple vet clinics close in the last five years. It's a bad situation.

2026-02-15 20:18:13 UTC

I found out why my vet's office is so backed up lately. The woman who ran the front desk, and hence made the clinic run, got sick and tired of being profiled and pulled over by federal agents on her work commute. She's a white citizen, married to someone with a Latinx last name. So it seems that ICE/CBP are using automatic license plate readers to identify cars with owners with foreign sounding names, and stopping them over and over. She quit her job and now stays at home. #ICEOut

What happens when for-profit companies put lots of satellites into orbit to generate revenue and then the market collapses for the service the satellites provide or the company suffers financial decline or ruin?
Who's going to be stuck with the expensive task of maintaining that fleet of satellites then?
Or do we just say "fuck it" and let the Kessler Effect turn *all* of the satellites orbiting earth into a disastrous cloud of debris?
So much madness.

[Repost] Clean YouTube links. When you get a link from YT, it includes an ID tracking back to YOU. It's a "query string" on the end of the URL like this:
...?si=[tracker_ID_here]
This ID allows YouTube (and their owner, Google, and *their* owner, Alphabet, and ALL of their associates) to track the people who click on the link, and the apps they used, back to you, building a network of none-of-their-business.
Good news: DELETE the "?si=..." part & the link works just fine without the tracking.

“You cannot bring a firearm, loaded, with multiple magazines to any sort of protest that you want — it’s that simple,” Mr. Patel said during an interview with Fox News. “You don’t have a right to break the law.”
The unconstitutionality of Kash Patel's assertion aside, Alex Pretti was not at a protest, not part of a protest, not on his way to a protest. He was walking down the street and observed a border patrol action. Is that breaking the law now?

Tomorrow (Friday, 1/16) marks four weeks since all of the Epstein files were required to be released by law. To date the Department of Justice has released 0.6% of the known material.
The DOJ has not even made incremental releases, as it said it would when it missed the deadline.
ICE, Venezuela, Greenland, and Iran are not making the Epstein files go away.

Amid the suspension of the SNAP (food assistance) program, remember that donating money to your local food bank goes *much* farther than donating food. Food banks can utilize discounts from suppliers not available to the public, plus they need your funds for transportation, storage, and distribution of food.
Whatever you do, resist the temptation to clean out your expired or expiring food from your pantry to donate to your food bank. Those donations are disruptive to their work.

I was camping with my girlfriend about 150 miles away in the Three Sisters Wilderness and we heard the blast. We heard a second big boom as it echoed off Mt. Jefferson or Mt. Washington. Trump is just making shit up about the Canada-US border as a rhetorical pretext to argue for the US invasion of Canada. Scary as all hell, especially if you are Canadian.
But let's take a quick look at why the border follows such a long straight line from the Great Lakes westward. The Treaty of 1818 between the UK and the US established most of that border at the 49th parallel north -- due in large part because a straight border was much easier to survey than one that followed rivers.

Today's chore: reglazing a few window panes on our 91 year old house that are more exposed than others. Perhaps the first time they've been redone, who knows? Unfortunately, they are on the second storey with no good access from below so I am working on the outside frames by standing inside and reaching through the open window with a tool in one hand and a mirror in the other. Hah!
Praise for this YouTube video, esp. the whiting (CaCO3) trick for clean up! https://youtu.be/CngfJFxe2rk

The assignment isn't to turn in a paper, it is to write a paper.

"Is this your first experience of jazz, Lady Grantham?"
"Oh, is that what it is? Do you think any of them know what the others are playing?"
Rest in peace, Maggie Smith.

After yesterday's heavy downpour, today was clear and mild. This afternoon I spent a number of pleasant hours pruning the dead branches out of a 28' tall rhododendron. There is now a lot more light filtering down through it.

1488 is no coincidence, and MyPillow head shithead Mike Lindell knows it.
14 stands for "The 14 Words" which is an ugly white supremacist saying.
88 stands for "Heil Hitler", with H being the eighth letter in the alphabet.
You will find 1488 in tattoos and other insignias of Nazi and white supremacist hate groups.
There is no doubt that Mike Lindell is sending this dog whistle to his Nazi and white supremacist buddies.
What a shithead.

A friend told me that his doctor said no one dies of COVID anymore. A medical doctor said that.
According to the Oregon Public Health Division, 45 people died from COVID in my state in August 2024.
People are still dying from COVID.

"To put [undecided voters] in perspective, I think of being on an airplane.
"The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. ‘Can I interest you in the chicken?’ she asks. ‘Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?’
"To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked."

The state of Missouri is set to execute an innocent man next week. DNA evidence proves Marcellus Williams' innocence but he is scheduled to be executed on Sept. 24, for a crime he did not commit.
Call Gov. Parson and urge him to stop the execution before it’s too late: *(573) 751-3222*

Why did ABC News let Trump respond multiple times beyond the agreed rules of the debate? The moderators allowed themselves to be bullied by the Great Bully.

Donald Trump is deteriorating rapidly. But will it be quick enough for his base to recognize that he's fucking bonkers?

Why is it so hard to find Groucho Marx KN95 masks? I can find Groucho masks, and I can find KN95 masks. Where are the Groucho Marx KN95 masks? Help me, oh mighty Mastodon!

Remember that Fox News testified in court that they are NOT a news organization.
Granted, not even that saved them from settling the Dominion defamation lawsuit for $787 million. That was a lawsuit resulting from Fox News doing Trump's bidding, falsely claiming, without any evidence, that Dominion voting machines were rigged.
Fox News is not news. Fox News is a propaganda machine for Donald Trump. And they paid nearly a billion dollars to prove it.

A linguistics professor was lecturing on the role of the double negative, noting that in some languages like Russian a double negative remains negative, while in other languages like French a double negative becomes positive. However, the professor observed, in no language in the world does a double positive become negative. From the back of the classroom a student replied, "Yeah. Right."
