If all this money that is being spent on #AI #LLM tokens was used to support #FOSS, you'd all be living in the future with awesome software instead of #slop.

Tell me your favourite #mastodon client plz :3
So far, I tested:
* Pinafore
* Phampy
* Toot! (on iOS)
* Masto-fe
I'd prefer a #foss one, but nothing against commercial clients.

I remember doing something similar with Palm Pre 2 and HP Pre 3 running webOS. The Android runner worked half the time.
I am not sure we'll ever trully be able to run that stuff outside iOS or Android unless some legislation is put in place to foster it.

I saw here today that the company doesn't seem to be a good FOSS player and been toxic to their contributors. Before today, I was totally unaware of them.
I don't think I could run a Linux phone as a primary device cause I need government and banking apps that are only available to iOS or Android.

as someone who write that reference material for a living and whose employer attempted to train and offer an AI solution based on my own material, let me candidly say: hell no.
AI not only hallucinate more than people realise, but also misses all the nuance and contextualisation that exists beyond their training data but that is part of the lived experience of those producing and using such content.
Slop is very sloppy.

Just added a tool to help free up disk space used by blobs in Poncho Wonky.
#SecureScuttlebutt keeps moving forward regardless of naysayers.
If you're running Patchwork, you should consider migrating to my fork Poncho Wonky.

Alexandre,
An append-only log does not a blockchain makes.
SSB uses an append-only log that is cryptographically signed.
There is no proof of stake, no proof of work, no artificial scarcity, there are no tokens. It is not a blockchain.
Please, don't spread fud.

most of that data are actually blobs, which are images and other attachments, those can be deleted and will be fetched again from the network if needed.
I will add a blob manager in the next version.

you are doing nothing wrong, this is a limitation.
It uses a lot of disk space so it can be offline first. You have all the data. It shouldn't become super slow forever. On the new version, I added a better search engine but it takes a while until it indexes everything and also it takes longer to load on launch, but once it is running it is very good.
You can't delete cause you can't modify the signature chain. That is the secure part of secure scuttlebutt.

Try not to go with "best decision for how to that synchronization" and maybe just accept that you have a different opinion and would do things different. That doesn't invalidade Dominic's choice. Those were his choices more than a decade ago. We do the choices we can with the cards we're dealt at the time. There's is a decade worth of learning after it that was not present when those decisions were being made. Context is important.

Federation is a whole different ecosystem. ActivityPub servers are servers mostly on ther web and that comes with other needs.
SSB can work without the internet or the web. Tiny SSB can work over BT and LoRa.
This is not a competition, these are the decisions made by the protocol designers and they were made for a reason even if the reason was "yolo this is cool".
Certain things only become apparent in hindsight though, and that's life.

SSB p2p connections have secret handshake but SSB is not private or deniable.
Messages are a chain because it is important for the designers that they can attest that a given message was posted by a given identity.
You don't want such chain or need more privacy, there are other protocols.
This thread feels like a king of the hill where people are throwing unrelated protocols against each other trying to see who comes up on top regardless of that protocol objective.

SSB worked back then and still works now. It has more features now than it had back then.
I also think that people in this thread are pushing requirements and constraints in SSB that were NEVER a part of SSB protocol.
SSB is a network for connecting friends. It follows the same semantics of real life social interactions and groups.
It has never been a privacy oriented protocol for adversarial situations.

Just read the thread and there are many good points in it. As I said before, I'm not here to attempt to convince any of yous or have a flamewar.
I disagree with many of the view points expressed in the thread around terming SSB as dead or extinct and claiming it is only valid if old time developers are still present. Don't forget, I wad there from the start as well. Find it mildly annoying to see it called hobby even if it was not intentional.

it is not a blockchain, they are just linked post with a digital signature.
You can delete stuff the same way you can’t delete an email after sending. It is the nature of systems in which messages fly away from your device.
Forking your feed can and might happen, there is no way around that with that protocol. It is indeed a limitation but it is quite rare.

the fediverse is indeed cool, but it is not the p2p I aim for. It is very costly to run an instance in terms of bandwidth and also it is server to server and that is just federation, which is cool in its own way but not comparable. It has the best of both worlds and also the worst.

Lots of exciting #decentralization protocols and technology out there. Some are not ready for usage, others are not following the paradigm I prefer, I love that we're spoiled for choice.
IMO I still love #SecureScuttlebutt, for me it is still the best offline-first local-first gossip protocol out there. Yes, it has dangerous corners and design issues, but it works and I can build apps with it for my friends.

hey #fediverse people using #mastodon on underpowered machines, what is your client of choice?
I'm on a #SurfaceGo with a Pentium Gold running #Fedora with #KDE and think that maybe someone here has a recommendation for something more lightweight than the default web client.

it cannot contain forks because you can't verify which side of the fork is real. The protocol uses a sequential numbering system as shown in that page. If all of a sudden you have two messages with the same number but different content and signatures, things break down. Maybe you can use something else for your protocol. CRDTs are all the rage these days.
Take a look at p2panda and worm blossom, they might be more to your liking.

they did. That was a conscious decision and is well documented. Every protocol makes choices. You will have to make some as well and someone will disagree 😹

your feed is on your computer. So different devices end up with different feeds.
Each feed is a linked chain of messages and actions that are signed and verified using a key pair. The keys never leave your computer.
If you have the same keys and the same feed in two different devices, you might end up posting from one device and then posting from another device before both copies of the feed are the same resulting in a fork in the feed. Which will break your feed.

2026-01-26 16:56:37 UTC

unfortunately that is a really hard problem due to how the protocol is designed.
The way most people work is by having multiple profiles. That is how I work for example.
Let me explain why that happens in the next post.

hey #fediverse what is the current #activitypub server that provides features similar to #mastodon or #pleroma that uses the fewest resources? Is there anything there that is good for single user instances?
I'm aware of GoToSocial and Honk but wondering what else is there.
