Yes, read that again: the post of a Palestinian, suffering through genocide in Gaza and trying to share her experience – someone who is, moreover, a founding team member of Gaza Verified – was *deleted* for a stupid hashtag that some white Karen in the West got distressed about.
This is so fucking wrong in so many ways that I don’t know where to begin.
I want to know:
1. Is it mastodon.social policy to just go ahead and delete the posts of its members or was this a moderator acting out of spite against a Palestinian? (Or is everyone on mastodon.social at risk of having their posts deleted if moderators don’t agree with the hashtags they use?)
2. If this is not mastodon.social policy, I’d like to know what action will be taken regarding this moderation action and the moderator responsible and what will change internally to ensure that something like this doesn’t happen again. Israel is already doing their best to erase Palestinians, the least we can do is to not help them by literally deleting the posts of Palestinians on the fediverse. Thank goodness hashtags weren’t a thing in the days of Anne Frank because clearly some of you would have burned her diary had she used the wrong one by mistake.
3. Can we all, please, have some fucking basic decency and maintain perspective when dealing with people suffering through genocide, ethnic cleansing, and apartheid? It’s a pretty low bar for humanity.
And, whatever you do, do not be this Karen.
Check your bloody privilege.
And fuck your hashtag.

If you don’t have the resources to write and understand the code yourself, you don’t have the resources to maintain it either.
Any monkey with a keyboard can write code. Writing code has never been hard. People were churning out crappy code en masse way before generative AI and LLMs. I know because I’ve seen it, I’ve had to work with it, and I no doubt wrote (and continue to write) my share of it.
What’s never been easy, and what remains difficult, is figuring out the right problem to solve, solving it elegantly, and doing so in a way that’s maintainable and sustainable given your means.
Code is not an artefact, code is a machine. Code is either a living thing or it is dead and decaying. You don’t just write code and you’re done. It’s a perpetual first draft that you constantly iterate on, and, depending on what it does and how much of that has to do with meeting the evolving needs of the people it serves, it may never be done. With occasional exceptions (perhaps? maybe?) for well-defined and narrowly-scoped tools, done code is dead code.
So much of what we call “writing” code is actually changing, iterating on, investigating issues with, fixing, and improving code. And to do that you must not only understand the problem you’re solving but also how you’re solving it (or how you thought you were solving it) through the code you’ve already written and the code you still have to write.
So it should come as no surprise that one of the hardest things in development is understanding someone else’s code, let alone fixing it when something doesn’t work as it should. Because it’s not about knowing this programming language or that (learning a programming language is the easiest part of coding), or this framework or that, or even knowing this design pattern or that (although all of these are important prerequisites for comprehension) but understanding what was going on in someone else’s head when they wrote the code the way they wrote it to solve a particular problem.
It frankly boggles my mind that some people are advocating for automating the easy part (writing code) by exponentially scaling the difficult part (understanding how exactly someone else – in this case, a junior dev who knows all the hows of things but none of the whys – decided to solve the problem). It is, to borrow a technical term, ass-backwards.
They might as well call vibe coding duct-tape-driven development or technical debt as a service.

If you’re signed up for a verification call with Gaza Verified in March, please note that the time of the calls have changed from starting at 1PM (with four calls at 1PM, 1:15PM, 1:30PM, and 1:45PM) to starting at 12PM (12PM, 12:15PM, 12:30PM, and 12:45PM).
This is due to the United States entering Daylight Savings Time (DST) while Gaza only enters DST on March 28th.

TL; DR: Pseudoanonymised/anonymised data is bullshit.
Rule of thumb: pseudoanonymous data is just data that can be deanonymised when combined with other datasets with overlapping markers.
As long as data pertains to an individual and there are enough data points, you an undo the anonymisation. In fact, there’s a multi-billion-dollar data deanonymisation industry of data brokers that help corporations, governments, etc., do just this.
The only type of anonymous data that isn’t bullshit is aggregate data.
So:
Bullshit: I have 10 records but I’ve “anonymised” them by removing the names from them. (If I buy a dataset with overlapping markers, I can deanonymise the data.)
Not bullshit: There are 10 people who visited this page yesterday. (I have no way of finding out who those 10 people are from the aggregate data point.)

Aya is an outstanding student (she had a ~97% score on her university entrance exam) and one of our volunteers at Gaza Verified. She spends an hour most days helping other Gazans get verified to help protect their accounts on the fediverse.
If you can, please help her continue her education.
(We want to try and help her to find a university programme in Europe to join. She’s been practicing for the Duolingo exam and I just bought her two exams so she can prove her English proficiency as a first step towards that goal. Arguing that criticism of Zionism is criticism of all Jewish people is like arguing that criticism of MAGA is criticism of all Americans.
Just like there are a large number of Americans who are MAGA, there are a large number of Jews who are Zionists but no, not all Americans are MAGA and not all Jews are Zionists (rule of thumb, if your argument starts with “All Jews are…”, it’s a fundamentally antisemitic one).
Furthermore, just like not all MAGA are Americans (hello, Nigel Farage, etc.), not all Zionists are Jews. In fact, many Zionists – like Christian Zionists – are deeply antisemitic and Zionism itself is mired in antisemitism*.

Raise the EU's €10,000 cross-border OSS threshold to €1M (or even €10M).
You’ll still stop Big Tech corporations from jurisdiction shopping and you’ll remove the compliance and accounting burden on tiny and small businesses so we don’t end up either needing merchants of record or, as I’m sure many do, fly under the radar and hope you don’t get noticed. You might even end up *increasing* tax revenue because of it (it’s not revenue if you can’t collect it.)
(Anyway, just an idea… I won’t hold my breath or anything.)
