A lot of what I would have to say has been documented in the "people's history" type articles written about a decade back by Robek and Strypey, about the early, pre-Masto Fediverse from a user and social perspective, but I could be helpful with clarifications. (I'll try to locate those articles)
Like many others have pointed out, I would say Evan, CWebber and Gargron have key perspectives not to leave out from a history, protocol, development and hosting perspective, and for modern hosting perspectives and broadness of software and ways of running communities, I'd talk to Jerry and Darius.
I think all of these people have been at-mentioned elsewhere in the thread and I won't spam them further here.
Another interesting branch of the Fediverse historically is the one with Quitter, En Kompis Kompis, Freesocial and the Umeå Hackerspace, but I'm not sure where to find mmn, pettter and peer2hannes these days. If I @ them here, my server gives me the defunct Umeå Hackerspace server.
Oh, and I hope someone digs out that beautiful fedi software landscape poster from that workshop a few years ago.

The ubiquitous Swedish online ID solution BankID, which is used by 95% of smartphone users, was founded and is owned by Swedish banks and Swedish subsidiaries of international banks, hence the name.
Other banks, Swedish authorities and other businesses are also able to make use of the system. The tax office alows you to identify with BankID, as does my Swedish DNS registrar, and Kivra, the secure mailbox for e.g. business invoices and government messages.
I guessed off the cuff which banks would have been involved, and I was quite wrong. The banks are (were as of 2020, but probably didn't change):
- Danske Bank
- Handelsbanken
- Ikano Bank
- Länsförsäkringar Bank
- SEB
- Skandiabanken
- Swedbank
I was quite surprised not to see Nordea in that list, and didn't expect the smaller actors Länsförsäkringar and Ikano.
I thought Skandia wouldn't be in there either, but in retrospect I should have known better, as they were bank tech pioneers, and BankID is conceptually related to their early solutions.

Physical books are important for pupils’ learning and teachers’ work, but many schools still lack appropriate textbooks. In 2023, the Government introduced a new grant targeting preschool classes, compulsory school and equivalent forms of schooling.
In November 2024, the Government voted in favour of the Government Bill ‘Strengthened school libraries’. This decision involves clarifications in the Education Act to ensure that pupils have access to staffed school libraries in their own schools from 1 July 2025.

@nprofile…tsag I can't claim to have studied it, but the vibe I have received is that the Mandate of Heaven has pretty much always been invoked in retrospect. If you need to invoke it to try to undermine a would-be usurper, you've pretty much already lost.
The tie to secularism may be overplayed, but I find it interesting. Either way, Chinese history seems to be one of actual meritocracy, more than any other nation-state I'm aware of.

Arnaud Bertrand (@arnaudbertrand): This is probably the single feature that makes China most unique as a civilization in human history: it is pretty much the only one where religion never had a say in political affairs.
We often wrongly believe that China's secularism came with Communism but this couldn't be more wrong. The roots are far, far more ancient than this.
Think about any other civilization - India, Persia, ancient Egypt, European civilization, the Incas: they all had a priestly class that held considerable political power. China? Never.
Never, ever? Actually China, in its very early history, had a brush with theocracy during the Shang dynasty in the 2nd millennium BC. And it is precisely this episode - or rather what came afterwards - that decisively de-linked religion from government affairs.
How so? Because around 1046 BC, the Zhou overthrew the Shang and immediately faced a big problem of legitimacy. The Shang had claimed to rule because Heaven had chosen them. If that were true, then the Zhou had just committed the ultimate act of sacrilege. How do you justify going against God’s will?
The answer the Duke of Zhou (who can thus be credited as the - perhaps unwitting - inventor of secularism) came up with was essentially to say that Heaven's mandate is not a birthright but a contract - conditional on the virtue of the ruler and good governance.
It might not sound like much but this idea completely changed the whole equation: suddenly the legitimacy of power didn’t rest on God’s will but on man’s moral judgement, on whether the ruler had virtue (德, Dé) and governed well. Which meant that, ultimately, the people - as opposed to a God - became the arbiter of whether a ruler is legitimate.
If there is one single decision that most shaped China's destiny as a civilization, it's probably this one. And, as I explain in my latest article, it ultimately shaped all of us in profound ways: through a chain of events involving Jesuit missionaries, Voltaire, and what French Enlightenment thinkers called "l'argument chinois" ("the Chinese argument"), it is this very idea that ended up secularizing Europe too and drove the Enlightenment movement.
That's the topic of my latest article: the origins of China's secularism, how it shaped three thousand years of Chinese civilization, and why - far from being a belief in nothing or an absence of belief as it's all too often depicted - it's on the contrary a faith in humanity itself.

According to Wikipedia, "finalise" is a "Non-Oxford British English standard spelling" of "finalize". If I check the OED, "finalise" redirects to the canonical "finalize".
So that means UK and US both use "finalize", right? What is a standard British spelling that is non-Oxford? Who monitors that?
It seems that most people online are sure that "finalise" is the British spelling, regardless what the OED says.
I got curious where Euro English stands on this, and searched the European Commission site. It uses "finalise" a handful of times and "finalize" zero times.
Now I'm curious where Commission English is standardized.

I specified that if the generated folder name is too long, truncate it and end it with three dots.
During QA the dots were missing, so I thought the dev missed that requirement.
Turns out #Windows eats the dots, you can't even rename the folder manually -- any dots at the end are eaten, same with whitespace.

HashiCorp's vault-action treats every value as potentially multi-line, uses a UUIDv4 as EOF delimiter, and even checks the value for the UUID just in case. Very nice.

Hmm, it looks like it might actually be treating the value safely and it's not just that we've been lucky this whole time.
I added a toJSON, and that seems to have been a toJSON too many.
More research is needed. The documentation doesn't say when it would escape expression values or not, or even if it does it. I haven't yet tried any wicked values.
And what I'm actually doing one level above this rabbithole, is to unbreak a thing, so I should be focusing on that.

I talked before about how one phone messes up its bluetooth audio when it's also sharing its internet connection to its WiFi.
So now I listened to my audio on the other phone, the one using that WiFi.
As expected, this did not cause the same interference, so far so good. But then I put my phone in my pocket, and audio started cutting out again.
Turns out it was my wallet. If I stack the phone on top of the wallet instead of putting it behind the wallet, if I don't have them overlap in my pocket, the bluetooth audio runs just fine.

The show overall had great world-building and general themes, interesting characters too, and solid acting, but the writing was really all over the place, characters turned clueless or savvy, callous or compassionate, friends or enemies, at the turn of the dime, whenever the writers felt it was needed to make something interesting happen.
Seasons 1--3 were the seasons where the show was finding its footing, 4--6 were moah, chef's kiss, and then 7--8 were I don't know what.

Fear the Walking Dead had so many surprise English people, haha, and one Iranian-Swede. We just finished the last episode, and there was a short behind the scenes thing about the wrap of the show, and there was still one "wait what, he's English too??" left, and one "she's AUSTRALIAN?!", when we finally heard the actors speak out of character.

Most of the thread is lost, probably to automatic housekeeping. Mastodon.social doesn't have it either. libranet.de/display/e5961e82-7… has dozens of comments about LISP, Turbo Pascal, etc.
Sadly the LISP one lost its pictures because the original comment lost its server.
