The block-based note structure will be removed because I have implement support for Markdown files.
Markdown support was always the goal but building a Markdown parser is not an easy task and there just haven't been any good options imo.
However, recently I discovered a cool parser and renderer:

I have made quite a lot of changes because I needed more features but it was an excellent foundation to build on top of.
The Markdown editor uses one massive `NSTextView` and then I inject SwiftUI views for images, videos, and code blocks by using `NSTextAttachmentViewProvider`. I haven't figured out how I want to implement support for tables.

I generally dislike heavy IDEs. I do think Xcode feels much more snappy compared to Jetbrains IDEs which I used at some point, but VSCode still feels much lighter.

The cursor is now changing to the correct `NSCursor` style when hovering image and video attachments in the #Markdown editor.
In the video, you will notice how when I click an image attachment which opens it in a popup, the cursor style actually changes back to the `iBeam` yet again... This is the next #bug to fix 😄 I want it to just show the normal arrow cursor when image popup is open.

Working on fixing a classic #AppKit and #SwiftUI bug where the `NSTextView` will aggressively override the `NSCursor` to `iBeam` (which is default for textviews) even when you specify that a different cursor style should be used.

Actually, I decided that `Cmd+Shift+Up` and `Cmd+Shift+Down` would be better shortcuts - they are now implemented. This also matches the VSCode shortcuts.
Now I am working on adding a `Cmd+X` shortcut that should allow cutting entire paragraphs where the caret is placed.

I got images working in the #Markdown editor I'm building 🚀

In the old Markdown rendering engine I also had images working, but this new version is a completely new implementation - none of the code is like before.
I decided to scratch my own implementation because even though my Markdown rendering engine was working as expected, I had some serious problems getting `NSTextView` and `TextKit2` to behave the way I wanted. For example, I was fighting a bug where it would apply the same styling to the last empty line as the text before it. Then I tried switching to `STTextView`, which did solve the bug, but had its own problem… It would crash the entire app as it caused an infinite loop bug because it was fighting #SwiftUI over the correct height of the textview. Therefore, the app kept recalculating the height which would eventually lead to a crash.

I implemented the shortcuts for **bold** and _italic_ to the Markdown editor.
Next I should make sure that the syntax is displayed when text is selected. For example, if selecting a word with bold text, like `hello **there**`, I want the asterisks to show when selecting that range of text.

This repository saved me a lot of time 😅 Have had an unbelievable amount of trouble with `TextKit2` and `NSTextView`. So many ridiculous bugs and I just could not get them solved... There is so little information out there about this AppKit stuff, and considering I'm still fairly new to programming, it makes it feel like I'm just guessing without really knowing what to look for.

Would also be a great opportunity to test Tauri. I’m not fond of the Rust backend, but I suppose LLM can take care of most of that. I just have never used Rust and I would rather not spend time learning it as it just seems useless for what I do.

I had a horrible infinite loop bug that eventually led to the whole app crashing. Basically, TextKit2 was measuring 281 points, but SwiftUI was forcing it to clip at 280 points. This caused it to invalidate its layout state and then it started a recalculation.
Now I have the height calculation working, so that the text view will expand or shrink automatically as needed.
However, I have a bug where the text moves up if placing the caret at the last index, then clicking arrow-down or just writing text. This will reset back to normal again when placing caret in a heading.
There is also a bug where Markdown styling only gets applied when first opening an MD file. If adding a heading, then it will not get rendered correctly.
There are still many bugs to fix, but at least now the height calculation is working... Interesting to see if `STTextView` fixes the issue when placing a \n after a heading on the very last line. Hopefully it does, because that was the whole reason I am now trying `STTextView`.

Haven't found a fix yet...
If I have text like `# Heading here\n`, then the newline below the heading will inherit the same styles. I have gotten the font size fixed, but still the spacing is the same as heading. This creates a massive gap between the heading and the newline below it.

The `swift-markdown` package does not allow extending with more AST nodes. Unlike many web based parsers like Lexical and CodeMirror.

Getting an annoying bug in my Markdown editor where line spacing is acting weird but only for newlines right below headings...

I am mostly done implementing support for all the canvas objects in the Electron app. So I’m moving on to note documents now because the last object I need to support in the canvas is the note docs.
I have just gotten Lexical to work in the editor. The experience is very different than my native Swift app.

This is because the native Swift app uses a separate text view for each block whereas all blocks are just one continuous text view in Lexical which is much better for performance.
I have not yet implemented support for images and videos. Only text with formatting is working like paragraphs and headings. #dev

Been working on copy-paste functionality for my notes app. It may sound a bit strange as you might expect this to just work by default, but because of the way I handle text editing in the app, it does not work out of the box.
My notes app is block-based and because of this, each text block is its own text view. This means, a note document includes multiple `NSTextView`s (one for each text block). This makes copy-pasting from multiple blocks quite complicated as these text blocks are completely separate - they have no connection to each other.
This is where my ‘sequential text view’ hack comes into play. I figured out a way to connect separate `NSTextView`s to allow performing text selections across multiple text views, and then I override the default `copy()` function with custom logic to stitch these text blocks together while keeping the text styling/formatting.
So far, copy-pasting works for text, heading, and list blocks. Tomorrow, I will make it work for table, quote, and code blocks.

I hear a lot of developers complain about AI having sucked all the fun out of programming.
I can understand that if what they enjoy is writing the code.
But personally I feel the complete opposite. I have never enjoyed programming more than now. I’m so happy that I no longer need to be spending a ton of time on writing the code. Instead, I can use that time on figuring out the best architecture for the system I’m building.
When I work with an LLM, I write Markdown documents that I use to prompt it with detailed descriptions of the features I want the LLM to implement. This could include which APIs I expect it to use. If it’s a rather unknown API, then I copy-paste the definition of it so it knows exactly which parameters it expects and which methods can be called.
I find that if I don’t give the LLM some clear directions, then it will start using deprecated methods and start writing new helper methods even though it could just use existing ones.
In general, I think LLMs can be a bit lazy at times… But they can do excellent work if given a good prompt. #AI #LLM #coding

I fixed a few syntax errors myself a few hours ago.
Sometimes it’s still faster to do stuff yourself than prompting AI and waiting for its response.
I find LLMs great at researching and discussing architecture (but they will tell you bs sometimes so don’t rely on them too much). And then I use them for implementing new big features.

Now that I have improved the media popup by implementing support for zoom-in and out with pinch gestures and an easier way to dismiss the media popup by either clicking the background or by swiping up and down, I think it's time to work on an easier to way switch between the different media attachments in a note document.

Been working on a different way to dismiss the image popup in the notes app.
Before the only option was to either click Escape key or click in the background behind the image which will also close the popup. Now the user can simply swipe up or down, or "zoom out" by making the pinch gesture.

I really want the image in the popup to animate back to its original position in the note document. I do have a semi-working solution, but it's still experimental. I'm having trouble with the opening animation being laggy, but the closing animation looks fine for some reason.

I think it would be beneficial to have an easy way for the user to manage and clean/delete the assets (images and videos) in their vault.
*The vault is the folder that contains all the files and folders in their Space.*
It should show a list/grid of all the assets. Maybe have an import button. Be able to rename assets. Allow user to select and delete. Stuff like that.
Then have filtering buttons. For example, filter by unused. This should display a list of all unused assets - meaning an asset that is not attached to any note or canvas.
In case an asset is being used, the user should be able to see which notes and canvases are using it.
I already have much of the backend for this, because once the user tries to delete an asset, the app will check to see if the asset is attached to any note or canvas, and if so, it’ll display a warning message that the user must confirm before the deletion will proceed.
I just think it would be great to have a dedicated page to manage assets rather than doing this in the ‘Files’ sidebar.

Regarding the website objects in the minimap, I haven’t decided how I want to implement it yet.
Of course, I could just embed another `WKWebView` in the minimap, but then I would be duplicating the same twice, which seems unnecessarily resource intensive…
Therefore, I’m considering a different approach where the app should take a snapshot of the website and then show that in the minimap. The minimap is so small that it does not really matter anyways.
When user clicks the web object, then deselect it again, the app should take a new snapshot. I think that’s the way to go.
The question is if we have five web objects in the canvas, that would be five different `WKWebView`’s which might also be resource intensive. So perhaps I should also replace the web objects in the canvas with a snapshot when user is not interacting with the object. This means, when user clicks a web object or maybe hovers it, the snapshot is replaced with the real webview. But this approach is only good if it is super quick, so that it feels natural. Otherwise it just leads to a bad UX if it takes too long for the snapshot to be replaced with the webview… will need to experiment with this.

I implemented an object to embed websites into visual canvas files in the notes app I'm building.

The website objects are live, meaning that if the user double-clicks on an object, they can scroll, zoom, select text, and click links - just as they would in a real browser.
I need to show the actual website inside the minimap in the bottom-left corner. Currently, it just shows a dark box with a Safari logo.

I just tested it and I can successfully run my macOS app from IntelliJ with the KMP plugin.
Will need to test how fast the LSP is - this was a big problem I have had with both Zed and VSCode.

I only write native Swift code, so Kotlin Multiplatform is not interesting to me, but I’ve been using VSCode for a while now, and the Swift LSP is slow. Like really slow sometimes. Maybe IntelliJ is faster 🤷‍♂️
However, I am currently working on a macOS app, so will have to see if the plugin allows me to run the app directly from IntelliJ.
And hopefully it actually prints the logs. I use a plugin in VSCode to be able to run my app, but often the logs just don’t appear at all in the terminal…

These problems are now fixed - moving on to the next bugs...
Recently, I discovered a strange bug with lines that have wrapping. For example, if we have two lines that wrap around, and I then click the top half of index 0 of last line, then the caret is placed at last index of the line above.
But then if I click bottom half of index 0, the caret is placed correctly at index 0 of that line.
So yeah, for some reason it depends on the y-value of click position.
Apparently, `NSSelectionAffinity` is using the `.midY` coordinate to determine where the caret will be placed.

**Another problem I just discovered:**
If we have two columns with two rows, then placing cursor in the first cell (col 1 row 1), clicking arrow down key you'd expect the cursor to move down to cell 3 (col 1 row 2), but that's not what happens. Instead the cursor moves to cell 2 (col 2 row 1).

Progress made: The floating formatting toolbar now works as expected in table blocks. I also got text alignment working.
I do notice a problem when selecting across multiple rows and columns, then applying a style like bold to the entire selected range does not work at all...

I implemented a table block for my notes app.
The total table width can be resized but also each individual column.
Columns and rows can be added and removed in the context menu.
I’m having a problem with the floating formatting toolbar not appearing when selecting text in the table. So yeah, not completely working yet - a few bugs to be fixed. Also need to get all text formatting working. E.g. text alignment currently isn’t working. #dev

I finally figured out a fix 🎉
The fix was to just not use the `Grid` provided by SwiftUI... Instead I built my own solution. Why is #SwiftUI so buggy 😂
To represent a grid, I just use a `VStack` with a `ForEach` loop. Then there are `HStack`'s for each row. Inside, I have another `ForEach` to represent all the cells in a row.
Looking back, I should have just dropped the standard `Grid`, but I never used it before, and honestly, I feel like it was just such a stupid bug that I thought it was me who had done something wrong...

Working on implementing support for tables in my notes app. Having trouble with `NSTextView` inside table cells not extending full height.
Like if we have two cells in a row (which means there are two columns), then resizing column 1 will cause the text to wrap around. Cell 2 in column 2 will then increase its height leaving empty area below. This empty area is not clickable because the textview is not extending all the available height...
Funny enough, when closing and reopening the note, then the height is calculated correctly. This means the available area is clickable. But as soon as I make a resize adjustment to a column divider, this available height is not calculated correctly... #bug

The reason why I didn't think the image was Blossom, was because I could not find it when checking bouquet.slidestr.net. I added blossom.primal.net as a server, but the image did not show up...

So apparently the Nostur client is replacing blossom.primal.net with the same image from Nostr.build instead:

Idk if the original note already included a Blossom image. I find it kinda confusing.

This is available at `blossom.primal.net/ca98e7aa27869ec211300e9bbda2e6b971fe6327ae0df52224e59f2f96d7b84c` which redirects to `https://r2.primal.net/cache/e/67/22/e6722445dd628f08a03465a6d5169b3197f0e63e53ace29b0784974949b88ec8.jpg`.
So I guess the image was actually a Blossom to begin with 🤔

I just found out the Haven app can find all your Blossom media and save it locally as a backup.

The only thing I can’t get working is videos in the ‘Viewer’ tab. I’m unable to play my Blossom videos and they also cannot show a thumbnail. Getting “No Preview ERROR 404”, but otherwise it’s working great.

I adjusted the idle screw. Now the RPMs are much lower. It’s difficult to find the sweet spot. Either it’s running too rich or lean.
But it at least now it’s not going full speed at idle 😁

This little RC nitro car has not been running for about 10 years. I replaced the glow plug to a new one and the tubes for fuel.
It can start but then stops when I lower the RPM. It seems to not be getting enough fuel.

When I try using the 'Mac Relay Sync' feature in the iOS app, I click the 'Sync Now' button. Then while loading it says 'Connection Error' and then I get the message 'Already up to date' after it finished loading.
Can you verify if that feature is supposed to work or not?
If I quit the relay on Mac, I get the same exact messages, so it does not seem to work for me.

Implemented a slash command to open a menu as a quick way to change the block type.

As soon as one of them increases their subscription price, the others will most certainly follow along by increasing their price with roughly the same amount as well.
Will be catastrophic for "developers" who are entirely dependent on AI to do the coding.

Will be interesting to see if the prices for LLM chatbots (Claude, Gemini, & ChatGPT) will remain the same or increase.
Especially now that VC firms seem to be a lot more careful what they invest in compared to COVID in 2020-2021.
None of the AI companies are generating a profit, so sooner or later I think prices MUST increase - the question is by how much.

Making patterns in CLO3D is so much easier than doing the actual sewing 😂
I feel like the hardest part of sewing the t-shirts is actually the hemming of sleeves and bottom of body pieces.
I don't have an interlock machine _(would have made it so much easier, but it's an expensive machine and requires too much space that I probably don't have)_, so I first overlock the edge then do double topstitch with my single-needle lockstitch. Getting these topstitches aligned perfectly is not an easy task...

This is the 3rd t-shirt I’m #sewing.
The first one, I had made the neckband way too long and the top-stitching was bad. But the sizing was good, so my pattern that I made in CLO3D turned out really great.
The second one was pretty good. Neckband was perfect length, but the neck cutout on the back piece was too far down I think.
On this third version I have changed the neck cutout slightly on the back piece, but otherwise everything is the same.

I implemented the navigation history feature. This version I made is global rather than per-tab, and I quite like it that way. It's similar to how navigation history works in VSCode.
