Old growth trees being transported on #bchwy19 near #Nanaimo this morning.
I would guess this is just one tree, likely transported by several truck loads. Looks like a western red cedar, about 200-300 years old.
They are still logging these in previously reserved areas along the Alberni Inlet (Nahmint) and on the North Island. 😢
These were in 8-10ft chunks on the truck. Not sure what their destination would be. Possibly chipoing for pulp/paper or 🤷‍♂️
A total open fire ban starts today which usually means the forests shut down.
Not sure if that is the case, as the fire danger is not extreme but any reason to stop cutting these elders would be worth it.

It's crazy that this image looks so 'still' but in reality, the object on the left is essentially falling faster and faster into the blue world on the right. Serious question.
At what point do the leaders of the world coordinate a joint statement to tell Donald Trump to calm the F down?
Because really, this rhetoric is way way out of hand.
Even Putin, whoever Iran's current leader is, Kim Jong Il, Bibi, all seem more rational than the current inhabitant of the White House. I don't believe any of them would use nuclear weapons as first.

I hate this timeline.
As a long time #climate campaigner... I almost feel like I should be hoping that the Iran/US war continues as long as possible so the price of oil and gasoline can go as high as possible and force economies to electrify and shift at emergency-speed to renewables.
We could have started on this the easy way 30 years ago... but a few of the same people objected and obstructed.

1) food and gas price controls
2) food and gas rebates/grants
3) EV, solar and wind mandates and grants
4) direct investment in electrification of fossil fuel transport and infrastructure, today. Move all existing projects on the books up to start asap.

yes. “Non energy use” of oil is about 15% of the total 100 million barrels a day. It’s 12% of NG use. But the reason it is a global tool of blackmail and war is the other 85% which can be replaced by renewables and different ways of doing things.

I saw someone yesterday say that solar and wind are just as “vulnerable” because so much of it is also shipped through the narrow straits of Malacca(?)…. Ignoring, or ignorant, of the fact that because the energy for renewables actually comes from the sun, only new or replacement solar/wind capacity would potentially be disrupted by this kind of shut down….
The sun would still shine and the wind would still blow, the rivers, magma, and tides would still flow, all no matter how many wars some idiot starts.

The amount of disinformation, deep fakes, and other misdirection I hear about from friends and relatives that they get from traditional social media is insane.
They have to tell me about it because I am almost always completely unaware, even though I am “on the Internet” just as much if not more than them.
This is a deep advantage of using Mastodon/the Fediverse right now. And it is not because fake stuff doesn’t exist here.
It is just not automatically sent to me by every owner, bot, and user. And if it is, it is generally swatted down hard.

It's wild how far behind North American, European, Japanese and Korean automakers are in the EV space. I submit it is *primarily* because fossil fuel interests are holding them back.
The new tech in China is stunning.

It is good that government is looking into the AI connections to the #TumblerRidge shooting. Sam Altman is meeting with Minister Soloman today, and Premier Eby tomorrow. But if they are only concerned about them notifying authorities when there is concerning behaviour, then they are missing the most important point.
What is ChatGPT or LLM-of-choice *saying* to these people? How is it *influencing* them? The LLM companies can and do control what responses the LLM gives to users.
Those responses must be regulated to ensure the safety of the user and our society.

It's official! This Sunday will be the last "leap forward" in BC!
As of next November, the Vancouver time zone in British Columbia, Canada will be referred to as "Pacific Time" and will be -7GMT permanently. (same as Yukon Territory which did this 2 years ago)
The presser was pretty cute actually. They had kids with little clocks, and they danced.
I would have preferred staying at Standard Time, but this will be ok too. It's interesting that Premier Eby made a point of (gently, as there were kids) insisting the delay of 6 years since the overwhelming survey response from British Columbians to eliminate the time change was due to waiting for the US West Coast states to do the same.
Now, BC has decided to push, and to lead by example.

A new university will be built in Arviat, Nunavut, on the western shores of Hudson’s Bay, by 2030. It will be by and for Inuit peoples and all to learn the culture and language of the North and for people in the North to obtain post-secondary education in their language.

The last time a Russian jet entered the sovereign airspace of a NATO country this is what happened... this was a 17 second violation (after multiple warnings by Turkish forces to the Russian jet to change course)

Got my water/utility bill for the spring/summer yesterday. (we get billed 3 times a year as part of our general city utilities bill including water, sewer and garbage/recycling fees).
Figured it would be a big water year this year so I've been wanting to see this. And of course, I have data going back to 2019ish.
Today's bill only goes to August 1st, so it doesn't include when we started to fill the #pondpool!
This was already a dry year in the spring and we were doing lots of watering in the front yard for the new ground cover in the modified driveway and the 3 new fruit trees.
Verdict:
2024: Apr 12 - Aug 7: 122, 200L
2025 Apr 14 - Aug 1 (7 less days!): 136,600L
It will be interesting to see if the August pond filling will add a big chunk onto our summer/fall consumption or if that is offset by both the brief August water restrictions, and the departure of both kids this fall to consume other people's water. ;=)
If you want an indication of how much water people use vs. yards: look at our August 2022 bill, which captures when we were on our cross-Canada roadtrip for 30 days in July/August of the 100 day period.

As of March 28, 2025 (presumably in Prince Rupert):
McDonald's: 50 of 80 employees on temporary visas
Safeway: 50% of its 78 staff
Save On Foods: 35%
Tim Hortons: 30%
Skeena Taxi: 60%
Chances Casino: 55%
Crest Hotel: 35%
Three other local restaurants were 100% per cent reliant on temporary foreign workers.
— I want to make clear — I am not 'anti-immigrant’ — I am anti-business using cheap, exploitative, labour.
I am also against public universities/colleges (and thus government) relying on exorbitant tuitions to fund domestic programs, also admitted by a former President of CMC here!
