i think, fundamentally, the reason Claude and Codex are becoming part of crucial FOSS projects is the same reason xz almost became the entry point for mass-scale server hacking a few years ago. we've decided to make billion dollar industries rely on burned out, lonely individual developers who never found a way to get paid for their labor. we never managed to solve that problem.
these burned out, lonely devs see a tool that spits out the boring part of their work in a more or less functional manner if you squint, and it "only" (*) costs "$200" (**) a month. i can imagine why most people take it. heck, i won't deny that i am tempted myself, but my convictions remain too strong.
i've also seen some say that these people should step down and make way for new developers. who, exactly? i know how many months it took me to find a maintainer for one of the more popular Minecraft mods, and that's a position with both far more takers and far less responsibility on either side.
i think that a lot of what's going to happen to software in the next few years is the consequence of long term systemic issues. the introduction of LLM tools to the equation is merely an illuminant and accelerant

Aside from the geopolitics of technology, this creates an interesting question: if an open source program is developed using extensive LLM support, could we end up in a world where it is legal in the US, but illegal in the EU? I dare not speculate, this is best left for the lawyers; however, it's certainly one of the reasons for which I'm approaching the technology conservatively for now.

One caveat. While in the United States I can see that coming, over here in the European Union, "fair use" does not stretch quite as far. This type of use will most likely have to be resolved via legislation. I think that will get really interesting, given Big Copyright is a powerful lobbyist here, while sentiment towards Big Tech feels increasingly critical.

Myself, I've been working on *unlicensed* peripheral preservation on the side now, so I'd like to introduce that subject matter a bit more here...
I don't really agree that this category is intrinsically in less danger of disappearing; if anything, the unofficial and low-volume nature makes many of them almost impossible to purchase today. (Though there are far fewer of them that are historically relevant.)
Many flash cartridges feature unique menu programs; as such, I think there is merit to emulating at least some of them to preserve those experiences and quirks. As much as the industry resents it, millions of people grew up with these things - more than the vast majority of games released on the DS platform! This rationale - the belief that unauthorized and underground experiences are not inherently less valuable than sanctioned ones - is part of why I added R4 emulation to melonDS in addition to its existing homebrew compatibility.
Some of these products were not even that underground, as they were sold in stores! The Datel Games'n'Music is essentially the unlicensed equivalent of the AM3 DSVision in this regard.
There were also unique *peripherals*, many of which are much harder to find for sale than licensed games. Here's the ones I'm aware of:
- DSerial Edge. For some time, it was the only way to use hardware MIDI communication in NitroTracker. I still don't own one, and have never seen one for sale.
- DS Fire Link's USB adapter. This is essentially an USB controller exposed via the Slot-2 bus. It received its own programs - USB HID implementations of a mouse and gamepad. I am the only person known in the community to own its earlier "D12" revision, while the "D14" revision is not that hard to find, thankfully.
- DS Motion Card and Pak. Not the Activision one, note, which is a simplified version of the original homebrew device. Homebrew programs for the DS Motion do *not* support the Activision variant. Thankfully, melonDS emulates both. I only own variants of the Card, myself, and I have never seen one for sale.
- EZ-Flash 3-in-1. It featured more RAM than the Browser pak (useful for e.g. DSLinux), as well as an enhanced Rumble Pak emulation with the ability to set distinct rumble strengths. These are a little expensive second-hand.
- SuperCard DSTwo. This is a Slot-1 cartridge with its own MIPS CPU on board, which received a fair share of unique emulator ports and even custom programs (in particular DS2x86). I still don't own one, and they are a little expensive second-hand.
There were also some peripherals which were sold, but I could not find any users of (like the GBAccelerator for the GBA - still in stock).

As the feature itself says, it's just friction. As with X, there are many third-party clients which allow you to see the post just fine - except unlike X, these are officially sanctioned tools using public APIs.

Congratulations to who I assume are Mojang's programmers for finally pushing this through. When I started work on alternate community-sourced Minecraft mappings in 2016, I did not imagine that it would start a domino chain culminating in Mojang's legal team finally conceding that the charade of binary obfuscation for one of the most reverse engineered games in the world is no longer beneficial to maintain.
Now let's hope Fabric finally lets Yarn go independent, as they should have done long ago.

Very good points on the whole, I've added a remark to highlight this as a strong perspective.
Though I feel that, in context of what I was trying to get at with the blog post, it ends up mostly shifting the goal post. Translation is a creative act, for example, but it's hard to deny the existence of readily available machine translation tools has allowed forms of cross-cultural and cross-lingusitic communication to manifest which would not have been possible were we limtied to human translators.

I wish I had the motivation to learn the new crop of systems programming languages, even to learn more about C++ properly honestly, but it kind of feels like I just stick to C because I'd rather stick to what I know. It feels every time I try to touch another systems programming language I end up being demotivated by not seeing the benefit from the initial hurdle of "relearning new ways to express what are effectively the same solutions".
